All NewYork Indians were affected. Native Americans were looked at ascolored and part of the colored troops. Black Beaver from Bellevillejoined his tribe, served as a scout on the side of the Union, acted asan ally to the Union soldiers, risked his life to Arkansas, and led thefirst expedition out from harm’s way.- Eli Parker, a Seneca Indian, was a Colonel on Grant’s staff. TheCherokee Nation was 21,000 strong and lent themselves to theConfederacy and served in the war with the South. TheConfederates promised the Native Americans land retention.- Under Stan Watey, the hallmark of his brigade, allowed scalping tooccur. News of this reached the North, and the White House was considerably irate about it, prompting aresponse from the Vatican that the pope’s letter did not amount to an “official” recognition in the “formalsense.” The pope’s letter to Jefferson Davis was accompanied by an autographed picture of the pope.

There are many possible reasons why this pontiff would be sympathetic to the CSA and her president, but the most likely one was that Pope Pius IX recognized in the traditional Christian culture of the South, amindset opposed to the advance of liberal Modernism. You see it was Pius IX who composed the famous“Syllabus of Errors,” which condemned the Modernist philosophies of liberalism, humanism, secularism, andMarxism. It is speculated that Pius IX saw in the Confederacy a political movement steeped in EuropeanChristian tradition, and therefore a potential ally against liberal modernism on the North American continent.Alas, the Confederacy was ultimately defeated, and President Davis was captured. As the ‘Deconstruction’ ofthe South commenced, and Davis awaited his trial, it is understandable why the pope would be sympathetic.

Pope Pius IX was a revered figure in the post war South. General Robert E. Lee kept a portrait of himin his house, and referred to him as the South’s only true friend during her time of need. Both Davis and Leewere Episcopalians, as were many Southerners before the War, a denomination which had many things incommon with Catholicism before the 20th century influence of Modernism of course. Davis was frequentlyvisited by Southern Catholic nuns during his imprisonment, who delivered messages for him and prayed for hisrelease. He eventually was released, having never stood trial, on the grounds that he committed no real crime. It is believed the majority of justices on the U. S. Supreme Court at that time acknowledged the right ofsecession.

Southern Americans of today should take comfort knowing that the old Confederacy did have aEuropean friend, and it just happened to be one of the most respected men in the world – not only a head ofstate, but also the leader of the world’s largest Christian religion. The day will come when Pope Pius IX will becanonized as a Saint. He has already been beatified, which puts him well on his way. When that day comes,Southerners will have a special bragging right, not enjoyed by many nations even today. They will not only beable to boast of his sympathies during and after the great War, but they will also have in their collectivepossession a relic of the man – a handwritten letter and autographed photograph.

An 1863 letter from Jefferson Davis, president of the secessionist Confederate States, to Pope Pius IXis preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives. Historians said Davis’ letter, filled with references to theCivil War, was a ploy to convince the pope to recognize the independence of the Confederacy andestablish diplomatic relations. (Courtesy of Vatican Secret Archives via CNS)

One of the most overlooked facts of the American CivilWar Era is the sympathy the South gained fromEurope’s most influential monarch – the pope of Rome.

Pope Pius IX never actually signed any kind ofalliance or ‘statement of support’ with the ConfederateStates of America, but to those who understand thenuance of papal protocol, what he did do was quiteastonishing. He acknowledged President JeffersonDavis as the “Honorable President of the ConfederateStates of America.”From this we can glean three things about Pope PiusIX:

a. He called Jefferson Davis by the customary title“Honorable.”

b. He acknowledged him as president of a nation.c. In doing so, he (at least on a personal level)

recognized the Confederate States of America as asovereign entity, apart from the United States ofAmerica.

PROCEDURAL BUSINESSNO OFFICIAL MEETING WAS HELD ON DECEMBER 15, 2014. Squad East held their annual Christmas event -- no meetingminutes to review.

FORMAL PRESENTATION was on “The Flight of Jefferson Davis” in the final days of the Civil War by Gale Red.

The presentation was about the flight of ConfederatePresident Jefferson Davis from Richmond as theConfederate capitol fell to the Union Army. Davis wasaccompanied by his family, the Confederate Cabinet andsome of their family members, over three brigades ofConfederate Cavalry. They took with them much of thedocuments of the Confederate Government and theConfederate treasury. What they couldn’t take wasburned. They left Richmond late in the night of April 2nd

1865 by two trains and went to Danville, Virginia wherethey stayed for almost a week before continuing on toGreensboro and Charlotte NC before proceeding on toGreenwood and Abbeville, SC, and onto to WashingtonGA where on May 5th the Confederate Government wasformally dissolved. Davis and a much smaller bandcontinued on South toward Florida hoping to escapeeventually to Texas to try to meet up with Gen. E. KirbySmith to continue the fight.

After five weeks on the road, President Davis, his family, several Cabinet members, and the men of the escort were captured bytroopers of the 4th Michigan Cavalry. President Davis and his family were taken to Fort Monroe VA where Davis would spend thenext two years in prison before finally being freed without ever having been tried for anything. The briefing ended with a recap ofthe men who served as the final escort for President Davis on his attempt to escape. All of them were also captured and spentsome time in jail also before being freed. This adventure was part of the story of the final days of the Confederacy.

(January 21, 2015, Cranston RI) Compatriot Jacob “Talley” Bailey (left) was the program speaker at

the Rhode Island Civil War Roundtable monthly meeting where 35 people attended. Posing with him

is Mark Dunkelman, the President of the Roundtable. Talley’s evening topic was one dear to his

heart--his book, Shadow Soldiers of the Confederacy: The Story of the Coleman Scouts: Behind the

Line Heroes of the Confederate States of America in Middle Tennessee 1862-1865.

(January 23, 2015) Commander Johnny Kicklighter

and Adjutant Gale Red enjoyed delivering an

outstanding living history presentation on what the

War Between the States was all about to the fourth-

grade students of the Smithton Consolidated School.

Their presentation also discussed who was on each

side and where the war was fought. Johnny and Gale

also briefly talked about the Confederate Submarine,

the CSS Hunley, and how the Confederate Navy took

the fight around the world.

The children were very attentive and seemed to enjoy

the program. A takeaway from a 10-year-old

Matthew Kicklighter, the Commander’s grandson and

one of the fourth-graders, raved about the event and

said “it was fun and they talked about girls and guns.”
