Department Day (2014): Report
After a lull of five long years, the Department of Life Sciences, University of Mumbai, celebrated Department Day, January 20‐ 22 2014. With an electric mix of activities, the three day extravaganza exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Day one started with outdoor sporting action in the form of Box Cricket and Badminton. A triangular box cricket tournament was played between students and the non‐teaching staff, some of whom had wielded the willow many years ago. Great team and individual performances ensured nail‐biting finish in almost every match. In Badminton, eight teams competed against each other in boys’ singles, girls’ singles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles contests.
The enthusiasm showed by boys on day one was matched in equal measure by girls who played Throw ball on day two. In the afternoon, indoor sports like Carrom and Table Tennis concluded the sports events. Musical Chairs, Three‐legged Race and Dog and the Bone added the much needed dose of excitement and cheer as the day went by.
Day three started on a high cerebral note with students passionately debating whether plastic is a bane or a boon; followed by a very interesting and engaging Quiz Competition. The grand finale consisted of cultural events like singing, dance, skit and Antakshari. Riveting and well rehearsed performances were perfectly complemented by extempore attempts by students and teachers alike.
Announcing the formation of the Alumni Association, Dr. B. L. Jadhav, HoD, said “The success of this event lies in bringing about quality interaction between students, teachers and the non‐teaching staff which is conducive for the academic and overall growth of the department.” Gifting a lifetime of memories to all, the Department Day celebration ended with the promise of it being an even grander affair next year.
