35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans

Strengths :

The department faculty and staff are involved in the holistic academic

and clinical training of students. The department has faculty who have completed post-doc research in well known Western universities such as

Northwestern University, USA and Macquare University, Australia. They have been successfully incorporating their experience to improve

students training. The department is technically and technologically sound to orient and train students in using the latest equipments/

software’s/ test materials during their practical training. It also has state-

of-the-art equipment to test hearing.

Weaknesses :

As the faculty are involved in academic, research, clinical and public

education, high quality research is not possible.

Opportunities :

The department can also focus on establishing research laboratories to

improve the quality of research. Faculty could be deputed for training in

different reputed laboratories to get hands-on experience. Different short term and long-term training programmes could be thought about to

fulfill the need for better rehabilitation of individuals with hearing impairment.

Challenges :

• Building infrastructure and manpower to cater to the needs of

increasing case load at AIISH.

• Conduct basic and applied research for better treatment and

rehabilitation of auditory based disorders.

• Providing necessary training, facilities and encouragement to faculty

and research staff to bring more international publications each year.

• Providing necessary facilities and encouragement to faculty to write books and getting them published.

13

• Building infrastructure to attract international collaborations in

research and training

• Starting more number of specialized training programmes at the postgraduate level

• Maintain optimum student-teacher ratio for better training of the professionals.

• Update the academicians and practicing audiologists in the country about the advancements in the field, novel strategies and advancing

technologies for early identification, accurate diagnosis and

rehabilitation of the auditory based disorders.

Future Plan

• Research Centre of Excellence on hearing sciences

• Clinical Centre of Excellence on hearing disorders

• Clinical Centre of Excellence on Vestibular disorders

• Initiating PG Diploma programmes

Clinical Guidance and supervision

(Direct and CCTV) for assessment

and management of persons with

communication disorders.

Special Clinics/Unit:

• Augmentative and Alternative

Communication Unit

• Autism Spectrum Disorder Unit

• Clinic for Adult and Elderly

Persons with Language Disorders

(CAEPLD)

• Fluency Unit

• Learning Disability Clinic

• Listening Training Unit

• Special Clinics for Motor Speech Disorders (MSD)

• Unit for Structural Oro-facial Anomalies

• Voice Clinic

Students are posted in these clinics/

units where standard procedures and

protocols are used for different

disorders. Students are trained in the clinical skills related to assessment,

diagnosis and management of persons with communication disorders under

the supervision of faculty and staff.

34. Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension activities

• Conducting camps, home visits, school visits, public lectures and

celebration of National and International days for persons with communication disorders.

• A sum of ` 25 lakhs per annum is allotted for Patient Welfare Fund which is utilized for payment of travel cost / accommodation /

provision of aids and appliances, etc.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans

Strengths:

• Department has world class infrastructure for clinical training and services for the persons with communication disorders and follow a

22

multi disciplinary approach with all services for persons with

communication disorders under one roof. Students get better hands

on experience in dealing with variety of persons with communication

disorders under the supervision of faculty/staff.

• As per the University of Mysore 75% of the attendance is mandatory

for the student to appear in the examination. However, clinical

posting at AIISH demands minimum of 90% of clinical attendance.

Students who do not fulfil the clinical attendance criteria have to

compensate to achieve 90% of clinical attendance. Students are

being monitored directly and through CCTV.

• Financial help is provided to needy stakeholders to meet the

expenses related to services provided in the institute from Client welfare fund

Weakness :

• Currently, the Clinical Services are restricted to AIISH, Mysore

which should be extended off campus.

Opportunity and challenges :

• The department needs to serve as a national model in the area of

communication disorders for which test, software’s for assessment

and rehabilitation of persons with communication disorders in Indian

language needs to be developed.

Future plans :

• Disorder wise database to be developed to know the incidence and prevalence of communication disorders in India.

• To increase the number of public awareness programmes on

rehabilitation services.

• To develop a standardized protocol for quick assessment and

rehabilitation of communication disorders.

• Digitization of Clinical documentation.

35. SWOC analysis of the Department and Future plans

Strength:

Majority of the faculty members (77.77%) of the department are doctoral degree holders and guide a major bulk of students in their academic and clinical activities. The department is one of its kinds in the country offering PG Diploma in Clinical Linguistics for Speech-Language Pathologists, housing a large infrastructure (3 laboratories) and assessment and rehabilitation resources in speech-language pathology. The articulograph laboratory has the state-of-art equipment Articulograph AG500 which is the first in the country. The Digital Swallowing Workstation and Digital accelerometry for swallowing are second in the country.

Weakness:

Every faculty and staff of the department are involved in several activities of the department as well as the institute leading to not so excellent quality of research publications and clinical output. Opportunities & challenges: There is a need for improving quality of the research output of the

department. This can be done with more manpower sharing the various responsibilities presently handled by a small number of faculty and staff members. The department is also looking forward to reach out to a

wider population with its clinical services and public education activities.

36

Future plans:

Academics

• ABC level course in Indian Sign Language

• Post Graduate Diploma in Augmentative and Alternative

Communication (PGDAAC) Clinical Services

• Establishment of specialized lab for swallowing disorders

• Centre for persons with communication disorders (Children, Adults

and Elderly), with several units.

35. SWOC analysis of the Department and Future plans

Strength :

The department is unique in India and is involved in research in the area

of speech and language sciences. It is the only department in India to

run a programme in Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Speech Science

& Technology and has several clinics/units to serve professional voice

users and persons with communication disorders. It is a pioneer in

forensic speaker identification and undertaken consultancy in this area.

Weakness :

As all the faculty are involved in Academic teaching, clinical teaching,

research, clinical services and public education, it is not possible to

carry out high quality research.

Opportunities & Challenges :

The department has great challenge to project itself as a national center

for research in the area of speech and language sciences and to provide

normative data.

Future plans :

• It is proposed to establish a center for speech and language sciences with two units – Speech sciences and language sciences. The speech

science unit will have five sections (Voice cell, Phonology cell , Fluency cell , Prosody cell, Forensic speaker verification cell) and

the language science unit will have 3 units (Language science laboratory, Specialized center for Indian languages, National

programme on early language and literacy)

• An online programme on Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Speech

Science & Technology is planned.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans

Strengths:

Department serves as the technical backbone for activities of all other departments of the institute. The skills and expertise of the department staff

generates internal revenue. A secure environment, availability of resources, research projects, etc., add to the strength. The working environment is

supportive with good computing environment and strong leadership. The faculty of the department have established research programmes in specific

areas.

Weaknesses:

Restricted geographical area of service is the weakness. Being an allied

department, focus is more towards providing supporting services.

Opportunities:

With the extended network and using remote access, the department has all the freedom to explore new opportunities in client services as well as

infrastructure development. Client based rehabilitation engineering has lot of

scope.

65

Challenges:

Expansion of research activities with collaboration from other organizations

and research centres is a challenging task ahead. Updating the technical

knowledge and upgrading the technical skills of the staff with the rapid

changing technology is another challenge ahead.

Future Plans :

• Developing a Centre of Excellence in Informatics and Patents,

Rehabilitation Engineering, Acoustics and Biomedical Engineering.

• Establishing a Centre for Development of Accessible Technology

35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans

Strength:

• Center for Rehabilitation and Education through distance mode is

unique and first in India. Through its activities, the center provides

opportunities for the needy parents and persons with communication

disorders to avail the virtual services of assessment and rehabilitation

through tele media, skype, chat, and others.

• The center is producing resource materials (print, multi media contents, and DVDs) in multiple languages of India which will help

in correspondence therapy for those who cannot avail direct rehabilitation services due to various constraints.

Weakness:

• At present, there are limited number of regular staff in the

department making it difficult to have continuity in the activities of the department.

• Awareness about the facilities for tele assessment and rehabilitation,

needs to be improved.

Opportunities:

• With the boom in the advances in technology, the center has abundant scope to expand in horizontal and vertical directions in

future.

Challenges:

• The multilingual and multicultural issues in the country pose real challenges for diversified varieties of resource materials for persons

with communication disorders.

Future plans of the department:

• The center is planning to establish an audio visual laboratory to develop audio visual resource material in the year 2014-15.

33. Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning

• Audio-visual presentations

• Practical demonstrations

• Hands-on training

• Lectures

• Clinical case presentation

• Presentation by students

• Seminars

• White board

• PPTs

• Book & journal references

• Journal club presentation

• Project/dissertation guidance

• Assignments

a) Learner centered teaching methods:

• Academic activities such as assignments and presentations and

individualized clinical activities are provided to every student.

• Interactive teaching-learning methods are used for students of

Diploma in Hearing, Language and Speech (DHLS) in live as

well as virtual classrooms.

118

• Teaching with ICT facilities to teach students is used in all the

programmes.

• Tutoring through seminars, presentations, discussions and short term training programmes is carried out.

• The teaching-learning sessions are maintained on an average in all the programmes within 1:8 proportion.

• Case illustration, animations, audio-video samples of cases to support the theoretical issues.

• Weekly seminars like research article discussion through ‘Journal Club’ and cases illustration and discussions through clinical

conference.

• All the theory inputs given by faculty are supported by clinically

focused discussions, interactions, presentations, assignments,

demonstrations and practice with clinical resource materials.

b) ICT enabled flexible teaching system: All the classrooms, library and

other teaching-learning systems are supported by ICT resources.

c) Virtual Education: Technology enhanced video conferencing mode

is introduced for Diploma in Hearing, Language and Speech

(DHLS). In this programme, eleven off-campus centres at Ajmer,

Bhagalpur, Cuttack, Delhi, Imphal, Jabalpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Puducherry, Ranchi and Shimla are connected to AIISH. Theory

classes are conducted at AIISH, Mysore and transmitted to the off-campus centres via a terrestrial link and clinical work is imparted at

the respective off-campus centre. This has enabled simultaneous training of a maximum of 25 students in each of the centres per year

resulting in augmentation of manpower development per year.

d) The students of first M.Sc (Speech-Language Pathology) are posted

in the Centre for Rehabilitation and Education through Distance

Mode, where they get hands on experience in tele assessment and

rehabilitation of clients with speech, language and hearing disorders.

e) Self directed active learning system. Post graduate students present

professional topics in class seminars and symposiums as a part of

their academic activity.

f) Problem based learning. This is carried out through interactive

discussions in class and in the clinical posting of the students, it is on

a one to one basis. Students are provided practical training in

laboratories to learn to handle the instruments, administer tests and protocols etc on normal as well as clients with various disorders of

speech, language and hearing. Problem based learning is enhanced

119

with the input received in all theory papers and effort is made to

translate it to assessment and management of persons with

communication disorders.

g) Evidence based medicine/practice. Evidence based practice (EBP) is

the core requirement for every clinical activity of a student. The

structure of EBP is introduced in the theory classes but implemented in the clinical training and clinical documentation for every student.

Topics on evidence based approaches for rehabilitation of persons with communication disorders are covered in courses within the

programmes. Skill training is provided in the form of documentation of case studies, review of journal articles and discussion with

professionals in the field.

h) Emphasis on development of required skills, adequate knowledge

and appropriate attitude to practice medicine/rehabilitation. Each

student is groomed and periodically assessed for the skills,

knowledge and other clinical aspects through a well established and

tested mechanism. Orientation to the course with specific input on

the personality, character, approaches, attitude towards persons with

disability is held before initiation of the programmes. The students

are encouraged to write research articles to the Journals and to attend

scientific conferences etc.

34. Participation in Institutional

Social Responsibility (ISR) and

Extension activities

The activities are arranged by

different core departments and NSS.

Students volunteers of NSS of the institute are very active and

undertake programmes which are focused towards empowerment of

individual members in the society and educate the mass on early

identification and prevention of communication disorders, involve in

social responsibility initiatives by

engaging themselves in activities

such as blood donation, anti-plastic

campaigns, planting of trees,

creating awareness about noise

pollution, etc.

120

35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans

Strength:

• The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing was the first in India

to start a Masters’ programme. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes

are specialized and unique in the country. The Postgraduate

Diploma in Forensic Speech Science & Technology is unique and

is a credit-based 3-term programme.

• The Diploma in Hearing, Language and Speech is unique in that augmented capacity building at the grassroot level is achieved

through virtual classes.

Weakness:

• The Academic section has no computerized mechanism for student databases and online entrance examinations for

programmes offered.

Opportunities and challenges :

• The section has huge challenge in providing online entrance

examinations, online programmes and in retaining the graduates in

the country.

Future plans

• Launching of 15 academic programmes in the next 3 years.

• Launching of 2 regional institutes of AIISH, Mysore.

• Initiation of online programmes

• Initiation of computerized student database.

• Initiation of online entrance examination for M.Sc. programmes.
