DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY
ANNUAL REPORT- 2013-2014
1. History and profile of the department
The B.Sc Botany course was started during the year 1970 and the first batch
passed out in 1973. The department achieved a very good academic performance during
the past 43 years. The result of B.Sc varied from 75 to 100%. More over Mr. Anil kumar
of 1981 batch got second rank and Miss. Smitha V. Menon of 1999 batch got 5th
rank in
B.Sc Botany of Calicut University.
We started the M.Sc course in January 2000 and the first batch passed out in May
2001.The result of M.Sc varied from 83 to 100%. Miss. Rahana. T.A of M.Sc Botany
(2001-2003) secured Dr. V.V. Sivarajan memorial medal (Dept. Of Botany, University
Of Calicut) for being the top scorer in Taxonomy paper of M.Sc Botany/ Plant Science
examinations of 2002. Miss.Deepthi Das.K of 2004 batch got second rank and Miss.
Shibitha .P.S of 2009 batch got 3rd
Rank in M.Sc Botany, University Of Calicut. At
present the department is having a well equipped laboratory and museum. We are
maintaining a well managed Botanical and Herbal garden with different species of
plants, which are useful to our students.
2. Infrastructure
Our department has 10 rooms. There is a small room for the Head of the
Department, one room for the staff, three rooms for degree classes, two rooms for P.G
section, one room for tissue culture lab, one room for research centre, one room for
library and museum. All the rooms have fans, light and enough furniture.

9. Research Centre
Botany Department has recognized as a Research Centre of University of
Calicut. Official inauguration of Research Centre was held on March 5th
2014 by
Dr.P.Rajendran , Hon. Vice chancellor, Kerala Agricultural university, Vellanikara.
Official inauguration of Research Lab was done by our former Head Dr. A.R Raju,
Head , P.G Dept. of Botany , Christ College, Irinjalakuda.

10.Research Project
U.G.C Minor Research Project namely “An evaluation of seasonal variation
in the microbiology and physicochemical properties of well waters in Thrissur
District, Kerala, India to assess well water quality” is going on in the Department of
Botany Principal Investigator: Dr. M.P.Subin, Assistant Professor
11.Remedial Coaching
We have conducted 8 remedial classes each for weaker students of First,
Second and Third year B.Sc Botany students.
12. Tutorial system / students feed back
We have a systematic tutorial system. Our teachers spend a lot of time for the
interaction with the students. The students were given proper guidance by the
concerned tutors. Class P.T.A meetings were also held and the problems of the
students were discussed with their parents. Regular staff meetings were held and the
discussions were made.
A feedback from the outgoing students (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) were conducted by giving
a questionaire. It was analyzed and discussed among the teachers.

14. Association Activities.
Botany Association, OASIS was inaugurated by Prof. M. K. Prasad. Former
Pro Vice Chancellor, Calicut University and renowned Environmentalist on 8th
october 2013. He presented a seminar on Kasthuri Rangan and Gadgil Report.
In this occasion Dept. of Botany honoured the following students for their
excellence in various fields.

16. Project Report
This academic year our M.Sc students submitted 12 project works in various
fields of Botany .
17. Participation of students in NCC/NSS etc
College NCC battalion got second prizes in Boys and Girls Republic Day
Parade held on 26-01-2014 at Swaraj round, Thrissur. Many of our B.Sc Botany
students are members of this battalion.

Dr.C.T Anitha, Asst.Prof. of Botany Dept. is the coordinator of NSS Unit of this
college during 2013-2014. Apart from the Ianugural and national level routine
celebrations, unit undertake activities and projects in collaboration with the
panchayath . Out bursting activities of the year was the project of road making which
was a dream for the people in ward- 9, planting the paddy seedling. conducted a
district level seminar jointly with the Calicut university,inauguration of district level
blood donation camp by, Mrs. Geetha Gopi MLA
18. Participation of students in extracurricular activities
Sreenath. N.R of Fourth semester B.Sc have presented Mimicry in various
parts of our Country as well as abroad (Gulf Progm). He got 1st Prize in D- ZONE
Mimicry Competition held at Govt. College Kuttanallure on 29-01-2014. Cine artist
in Blessy,s Film Kalimannu.
Our sixth semester B.Sc student Shefrin have got scholarship for appearing IAS
coaching at Chennai.

20. Extension Activities As a part of extension activities, a survey was conducted by Fourth Semester
B.Sc students in ward 3 of Nattika Grama Panchayath. The survey aimed at
assessing the interest of the residents in developing and maintaining KITCHEN
GARDEN in their own premises. A questionnaire was distributed in 75 families and
the feed back obtained in order to select the eligible families for the purpose. 15

families were selected. Vegetable seeds were purchased from Agricultural
University, Vellanikkara and supplied to the 15 families. Our students gave
instructions and manual help for starting kitchen garden.
Dept. of Botany is also providing advices to local farmers about the agronomic ,
measures, scientific practices, organic farming, identification of pathogen,and its
remedial measures of vegetable crops, plantain etc
NAKSHATRAVANAM; Dept. of Botany planted 28 seedlings representing 28 stars
in the campus on June 5 (environmental day) with the concept of plant conservation
and scientific linking of Hindu mythology.
21. Botany Alumni Association
Botany Alumni Association “Haritham” was reunioned on the second Sunday of
January every year. In 2014, retired teachers and sixty Alumini members
participated in this function. Dr. Hussain , Alumni of Second batch gave the
welcome speech. Former Head of the Department, Professor Girija Bhai inaugurated
the programmes by lighting the lamp. Present Head of the department, Prof. Remesh
K.N gave the presidential address. Second B.Sc batch of Botany Department were
honored by giving mementoes in this occasion. Gave cash prizes to first and second
B.Sc and M.Sc toppers 2012-2013.

23. Staff Adviser
Remesh K.N Head, Dept. of Botany, is the staff adviser of the college
during this year. He leaded to organize College union celebration, 4 days Deparment
wise Fine arts festival, D- ZONE, Interzone competitions, College day celebration
and other college union activities. In the department wise organized 4 days Fine arts
festival competition, students of Botany dept. scored second positition. In the Inter
collegeiate D- zone competition hold at Govt college Kuttanallure on 28,29,30 & 31
Jan.2014 , students of Dept. of Botany scored one 1st prize, one 2

24 Modular course
Dept. of Botany conducted a modular course on Mushroom cultivation for
Degree Final year students. Various aspects of mushroom cultivation techniques,
demonstration and its practicals were also conducted under twenty sessions.
Experiences of local farmers in this regard were also included in this session.
