Fledermaus

General description

Easy-to-use 3D visualization package where geo-referenced data can be explored. The package has two main modules: A) DMagic – elevation models are color-coded and shaded and combined with maps, charts, aerial photos and satellite imagery. The data can be profiled and analyzed (e.g. histograms, dip-analysis). B) Fledermaus – 3D viz, where elevation models and draped imagery are visualized and explored. Additional data such as DXF CAD, solid model 3DS or OBJ files and ArcGIS data (shape etc) can be imported and draped on the elevation data. Fledermaus imports a wide range of raster formats, and has also a separate gridding package for random XYZ or attribute data. Typical uses: Gridding and visualisation of bathymetri, side scan sonar data, geophysical data (grav/mag etc). The software has a movie-making module, where it is possible to make fly-troughs of scenery.

Global Mapper

General description

Global Mapper is a software for coordinate transformation, and for displaying, converting, editing and visualizing 2D or 3D geospatial data. The user interface is not pretty, but it is easy to work with. Global Mapper supports an enormous amount of formats, including JPEG Image with World File, PNG Image with World File, AutoCAD DXF, ESRI Shapefiles, Surfer Grid (ASCII and Binary) Files, SRTM, IBCAO , GTOPO30, ETOPO2, GLOBE, Arc/Info ASCII Grid, Arc/Info Binary Grid, Arc/Info Export (E00), ERDAS Imagine, Erdas GIS Files, MapInfo MIF/MID and TAB/MAP, MicroStation DGN, BIL/BSQ/BIP Imagery, GIF Files, Garmin PCX5 (WPT, TRK), OziExplorer (WPT, PLT), GPX, GPS TrackMaker, BT (Binary Terrain) Elevation Grid, , Landsat 7A FAST, Idrisi, SEGP1 Seismic Shotpoint, CDF (GES Cartographic Data). Global Mapper also has built-in access to elevation data and color imagery for the entire world, and to view elevation data in true 3D with any loaded raster imagery and vector data draped on top of it. Data files can be loaded as layers, for example a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can be loaded with a scanned topographical map to create a 3D view of the map. A digital aerial image can be draped on the surface together with vector contour mapping. The results can be printed, or the workspace can be exported to a high resolution raster image for use in a presentation or report.
