FACULTY UPDATES

Dr. Linda Rae Markert During the 2014-

2015 academic year, Dr. Markert completed training with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and

served as a member of an accreditation visiting team for one of the first early adopter reviews. As an approved CAEP Site Visitor, she will participate in both early adopter visits and NCATE Legacy visits as appropriate. Closer to home, and during the spring 2015 semester, Markert introduced a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) Module into the department’s Organizational Change (EAD 660) course. She partnered with a new colleague at the Universität Potsdam in Germany. Using WordPress, candidates in both classes collaborated to create a very impressive blog site at: https://organizationalandinstitu tionalchange.wordpress.com/. Many weeks after the course ended, students continued to post comments and reflections to the site! She is optimistic we will be able to establish a new COIL partnership for spring 2016. Dr. Markert delivered two different papers about this initiative. She shared thoughts with colleagues at the Center for Scholastic Inquiry Conference in Minnesota in October, and attended the 6th Annual COIL Conference in New York City to deliver

remarks regarding “signature pedagogies for educational leadership.” Within the SOE’s Team Sheldon partnership, Linda Rae Markert continued to facilitate a variety of activities at Hannibal High School. In collaboration with the entire Advisory Group for the Hannibal CSD, she served as the Professional Development Consultant for the Hannibal High School Professional Development School. Through-out the year, Markert worked closely with two science teachers and several teacher candidates to create a STEM Team Mentor program focused on Project Based Learning for ninth grade science students. In early July of this year, Dr. Markert received notification that the Project BLEND (Building Leadership Excellence for Needs-based Districts) grant for which she is Principal Investigator will be funded for another three-year cycle by the NYSED for a total of $750K. Building on the first two phases of BLEND (2009-2015), we are calling the next phase Project BLEND EnCoRe (2015-2018). EnCoRe is an acronym for Engaged Collaborative Resilience. In this next cycle, we seek to better prepare emerging leaders and bolster the competencies of practicing administrators to be both mindful and resilient as they are increasingly called upon to multi-task amidst constant digital distractions. In alignment with the ISLLC standards that require educational leaders to navigate change in the midst of ambiguity and competing demands and interests, BLEND-EnCoRe will secure professional develop-ment and training related to mindful leadership. The HeartMath Institute will be a new BLEND partner; their programs have many learning outcomes, one of which compels leaders to use practical intuition to effectively manage change without becoming overwhelmed. These consultative interventions will likely move SUNY Oswego to further modify its CAS program to provide authentic and intentional learning activities that allow aspiring leaders to

practice mindfulness techniques within each of the core courses. Linda Rae Markert published an article titled “That was then! Changing landscapes for school building leaders” in the Fall 2014 issue of the SAANYS Vanguard journal. She also served as member of a panel to discuss SUNY Oswego’s TLQP project at the January 2015 CADEA Conference in Albany.

Angela Perrotto, Chair Joining the Jefferson Higher Education Center Recently, the Educational Administration Depart-ment of SUNY Oswego

became a formal partner with the Jefferson Community College Higher Education Center in Watertown, New York. Representatives from SUNY Oswego (Provost Lorrie Clemo) and Jefferson Community College (President Carole McCoy) signed the memorandum of understanding making SUNY Oswego an official partner institution offering all of the Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership on the Watertown college campus. Our students and staff now have access to all services and facilities available on the Jefferson campus. We also have more partnering opportunities with other university programs that are part of the Jefferson Higher Education Center (JHEC). Getting access to programming in the North Country is and has been a long standing Oswego commitment to residents of the North Country. This continues to solidify that commitment.

Currently, the Jefferson Higher Education Center houses differing programs from nine New York State universities allowing access to seven specific bachelor’s degrees, and eight program specific master’s degrees. As of the formal signing, we can now add a Certificate of Advanced Study in

Educational Leadership as yet another program available through the JHEC!

Readling Award Winners 2015

The Readling Award is presented to the SUNY Oswego Educational Leadership Graduates who, by peer nomination, are voted most likely to make a significant contribution to the field. Established in 1991.

Readling Award Winners 2015 - Nickolas Scholz, Janelle Dupee, and Daniel Doore shown with faculty.

Daniel Doore believes

that the administrative level is where one can have the greatest impact upon students. He says that by completing the Educa-tional Administration pro-

gram he was able to open his sphere of influence. He exemplifies this by a quote from an esteemed mentor, “I haven’t left the classroom. My classroom has just gotten bigger.”

Although he has been in his current position for a short amount of time, he is pleased with the newfound relationships with more difficult students. He found that being sincere and respectful towards teenagers goes a long way. He is enthusiastic about gaining more experience and wisdom. He feels that these will be valuable guidance tools for the future.

A challenge he encounters in his current position is time management. He says there are days when he feels to have “struck a

balance”. Although it may be tough, he enjoys what he does every day.

A piece of advice he offers future educational administrators is to never lose sight of the journey. The core beliefs and reasons you chose this path will carry you through the storms ahead. He also advises leaders to celebrate successes. He shares his own personal experience with fixating on areas where he stumbles and not placing enough emphasis on activities when he soars. He strongly advises to highlight the good, not only in yourself, but also those around you. As he is just beginning his journey in educational administration, he feels he has yet to make significant contributions. He believes that he possesses the dedication, integrity, values and student focus. These are skills which will allow him to make significant contributions to the field.

Mr. Doore would also like to add that “All yesterdays provide perspective. All tomorrows provide experience. Both demon-strate that today is all that matters to those we serve. Be your best each day, and remember those you serve are your number one priority.” The department anticipates having articles from Nickolas Scholz and Janelle Dupee in our spring 2016 edition.

Spring 2016 - Registration Matriculated graduate (those who have completed their CAS application and have been accepted) students begin registering on November 2, 2015 Non-matriculated graduate (those who are in the process of applying) students may begin registering on November 23, 2015. Welcome New Educational Leadership Faculty!

We are pleased to add three new professors to our team of practitioners. They come to us with a combined total of 88 years of experience in public schools across New York State and their leadership experiences span a multitude of titles in both the School Building Leader and School District Leader responsibilities. We value their reputation and are excited to bring their depth and breadth of leadership knowledge to our team and to our students! Cathleen Chamberlain, Former Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Oswego City School District Cathy joins the Oswego team with a multiple of leadership experiences. Currently, she is serving as Director of Grants for the Oswego CITI BOCES. Previously, she has served as Assistant Superintendent for eight years and Director of Instruction for one year. Prior to this, Cathy was a Technology Integration Specialist and an Elementary Teacher. As a SUNY Oswego CAS graduate, Cathy is now mentoring, advising, and

supervising interns throughout our North Country. Robert McKeveny, Superintendent of Seneca Falls Schools

“Bob” comes to our leadership program with 32 years of exper-ience in education. He currently is Superintendent of Schools for the Seneca Falls Central School District since 2008. Bob has also served as a Middle School Principal for 13 years and an Elementary Principal for three years. He started his career with eight years as an elementary teacher. Superintendent McKeveny is now mentoring, advising, and supervising interns throughout the Finger Lakes and Rochester area.

Donna Simmons, Principal, Fitzhugh Park School, Oswego City School District Donna, a SUNY Oswego CAS graduate, has

served as principal for seven years. Prior to this, other public school experiences include Interim Principal, Education Center Liason, Literacy and Elementary Teacher. Donna is currently teaching the EAD 641 Supervision class in the North Country. She is facilitating learning around instructional leadership, the observation/ evaluation cycle and all the new APPR regulations.

Recipients of the 2015 Program Supporter Award

SUNY Oswego’s Department of Educational

Administration Every year, the Department of Educational Administration recognizes individuals who have gone “beyond the call of duty” to give of their time and talent to support SUNY Oswego’s Educational Leadership Program. They have done this through volunteering, presenting, serving on committees, sitting on panels, and/or offering support in any number of other ways. During the 2014-2015 academic year, the following were given Program Supporter Awards and were recognized at the Annual Banquet in May. We thank them for their commitment and contributions to quality education leadership. Mark Reitz, J.D.

Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larrison, Barrett & Reitz Mark, just recently retired (January 2015) from the offices of Ferrara, Fiorenza, Larri-

son, Barrett, and Reitz, a law firm that specializes in educational law throughout New York State, offered legal advice to many cohorts throughout the North Country and Central New York. He did this in the form of presentations whenever and wherever he was asked. Mark specialized in Public Sector Employment Law and Education Law and volunteered on countless occasions to present within the Educational Law, The Principalship and Middle Level Leadership classes, and to the Interns in Seminar. Mark

never hesitated, when called upon, to give of his time, expertise, and commitment to assisting aspiring leaders. Dr. Maureen A. Patterson

Asst. Superintendent Liverpool Schools One of SUNY Oswego’s Department of Educa-tional Administration’s Program Supporter Awards for 2015 was pre-

sented to Dr. Maureen A. Patterson, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment for the Liverpool Central School District. Dr. Patterson truly exemplifies what it means to be a leader for transformational change, and she is most certainly a collaborative team player in today’s arena of P-20 public education. In her current role, she has consistently given graciously of her time to provide guidance and mentoring for the candidates in our CAS program. Whenever we call on Maureen to assist with our internship seminars, she is there to assist. Dr. Patterson was one of six administrators who coached our interns through a series of mock interviews for entry level leadership positions during their EAD 695 internship course. I accidentally overheard a couple of the interns stating to each other – “Be ready for some tough questions if you are slated to interview with Dr. Patterson – she is authentic, direct and knowledgeable!” One of my favorite interview questions I have heard Maureen ask is this – “If you receive this position in our district, describe a change you will want to lead, and explain how you will assess the successfulness of that change process.” Maureen Patterson has served as Assistant Superintendent for the Liverpool Central School District for the past decade since 2005. She has taught as an Adjunct Professor for both SUNY Oswego and LeMoyne College

since 2009. She holds her Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia University Teachers’ College, her CAS in Educational Leadership from SUNY Oswego, the Master of Science in Interrelated Special Education from Syracuse University, and the Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Exceptional Education from SUNY Buffalo. She continually mentors new leaders in her district, many of whom, we are proud to say, are SUNY Oswego Alumni. Ms. Abby Wiertzema

Data Manager School of Education, SUNY Oswego Abby was the “behind the scenes” person assisting the Educational Admini-stration Department in

her quiet, yet steady way throughout the reaccreditation process for NCATE/ ELCC. Abby not only entered syllabi, assessments, surveys for all of our key assessments throughout our program, but she also taught the professors AND students how to use TK20, the SOE’s data management system. This was no easy task considering that our students and most professors are “out” in the field. Her constant monitoring of data, missing pieces, wording, revising, and guidance was gentle, yet meaningful – and we appreciate that. As we look at the initials A & W for her name, believe that Abby was “Always willing”: Always Willing to:

• Help a professor; • Learn new things; • Drive to Syracuse, Watertown, or

Rochester to teach an evening class outside of work hours;

• Deal with the problems within the data management system with our students;

• Listen to our complaints; • Load data for us when some of the

professors didn’t know how; • Change documents within the

management system when we revised them;

• Have patience with us as we were nearing deadlines;

• Understand what was most important to us and what and how to report it with data; and

• Lend a strong hand.

They have worked in seven regional teams of four to nine members around the State with NYSSDP faculty mentors, practicing superintendents held in high regard in their regions and statewide who are deeply committed to serving the next generation of school district leaders. The program, which has been in existence since 1998, is designed for those wishing to become superintendents of schools and as well as for school leaders seeking to acquire a true district-wide perspective on K-12 education. In weekly meetings with program faculty, participants (Associates) have worked through a challenging series of authentic learning activities, real issues that confront superintendents in local school districts, to develop real world solutions with real-world consequences and to become acculturated to the superintendency.

The intent of the program is to immerse participants in the issues that superintendents confront from the reality of the superintendent position. As part of this authentic learning, participants have on-going access to current district-level issues in their region. In addition, they have hosted panels of superintendents for focused discussions, interviewed a number of local superintendents and presented to SDP faculty at statewide SDP meetings.

The NYSSDP is pleased and proud to congratulate the current group of Associates for their work to become even stronger school leaders and to thank them for their commitment to children and their parents, their school districts and their communities.
