Basic Circuit Concepts: Voltage and Current Sources, Review of Resistors, Inductors,
Capacitors. Circuit Analysis: Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL), Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL), AC
Circuit Analysis: Sinusoidal Voltage and Current, Definition of Instantaneous, Peak,Peak to
Peak, Root Mean Square and Average Values. AC applied to Series RC and RL circuits:
Impedance of series RC & RL circuits.AC applied to Series and parallel RLC circuit, Series and
Parallel Resonance, condition for Resonance, Resonant Frequency, Bandwidth, and
significance of Quality Factor (Q).
Passive Filters: Low Pass, High Pass.
Network Theorems: Principal of Duality, Superposition Theorem, Thevenin’s Theorem,Norton’s
Theorem, Reciprocity Theorem, Millman’s Theorem, Maximum Power Transfer Theorem. AC
circuit analysis using Network theorems.
Unit-2 Junction Diode and its applications: PN junction diode (Ideal and practical)-constructions,
Formation of Depletion Layer, Diode Equation and I-V characteristics. Idea of static and
dynamic resistance, dc load line analysis, Quiescent (Q) point. Zener diode, Reverse
saturation current, Zener and avalanche breakdown. Rectifiers- Half wave rectifier, Full wave
rectifiers (center tapped and bridge), circuit diagrams, working and waveforms, ripple factor
and efficiency. Filter-Shunt capacitor filter, its role in power supply, output waveform, and
working. Regulation- Line and load regulation, Zener diode as voltage regulator, and

1. The question paper for UG Classes is to be divided into three Sections - A, B & C.
2. Section A shall contain very short answer type questions (answer in one or two sentences) or
objective type questions. (No Multiple choice questions. No ‘fill in the blank’ type Questions)
3. Section B shall contain short answer type questions with the limit of 150 words.
4. Section C shall contain long answer/descriptive type questions. The students are required to
answer precisely and the answer should not exceed the limit of 350 words.

Operational Amplifiers (Black box approach): Characteristics of an Ideal and Practical
Operational Amplifier (IC 741), Open and closed loop configuration, Frequency Response.
CMRR. Slew Rate and concept of Virtual Ground.
Applications of Op-Amps: (1) Inverting and non-inverting amplifiers, (2) Summing and
Difference Amplifier, (3) Differentiator, (4) Integrator, (5) Wein bridge oscillator,
(6) Comparator and Zero-crossing detector, and (7) Active low pass and high pass, Butterworth
filter (1st order only).
Unit-2 Number System and Codes: Decimal, Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal number systems base
conversions. Representation of signed and unsigned numbers, BCD code. Binary, octal and
hexadecimal arithmetic; addition, subtraction by 2’s complement method, multiplication.
Logic Gates and Boolean algebra: Truth Tables of OR, AND, NOT, NOR, NAND, XOR,

and POS), Minimization Techniques (Karnaugh map minimization up to 4 variables for

Number system: binary numbers, binary to decimal conversion, decimal to binary conversion, binary addition, binary subtraction, 1’s compliment, 2s compliments, binary multiplication and division, octal and hexadecimal numbers, BCD code and gray code. Logic gates: OR, AND, NOT, NAND, NOR, Ex-OR, Ex-NOR GATES, positive and negative logic, universal building blocks. UNIT – II
Boolean Algebra:- De Morgen’s theorem, laws and theorems of Boolean
algebra, sum of product and product of sums simplification, Karnaugh map

Arithmetic Circuits: Half and full adders, half and full subtractors, binary

currents, shunt regulator, idea of Darlington pair, Regulator with Op- amp,

Analysis of passive filters (low pass, band pass and high pass), elementary idea of
active filters- Butterworth and Chabevyshev response. Noise: Thermal noise, shot noise,
portion noise, low frequency and transit time noise, generation and recombination noise,
equivalent noise resistance, signal to noise factor, noise temperature.
UNIT-II
MODULATION Principal of modulation waves spectra and effect of filtering on complex
wave; amplitude modulation frequency spectrum of AM, average power, average
voltage, modulation index for multiple sign waves modulator, balance modulator, signal
side band SSB, generation/method, linear & square demodulator (detector), diode
detector, advantage and disadvantage of SSB over DSB AM: SSB detection, Transmitter
and receivers: Super heterodyne receiver, AM Transmitters.
UNIT-III
Angle modulation: element of frequency and phase modulation frequency spectra of FM
waves, inter system comparison (FM & AM); generation of FM direct & indirect method;
angle modulator circuits, varactor diode and FET modulator, foster seelay discriminator
and ratio detector.

Pulse modulation: pulse modulation & pulse transmission pulse amplitude modulation
(PAM), time division multiplexing (TDM), pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse
