DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE Center for Acute Care Research Quarterly Newsletter October – December 2017 WELCOME: THE VICE CHAIR’S CORNER The winter holiday season provides an opportunity to stop and reflect on both the blessings and accomplishments of the previous year and the exciting forthcoming scholarly projects in our future. The start of Academic Year (AY) 2018 has witnessed the growth and development of strong scholarly partnerships with three industry sponsors (Gilead Pharmaceuticals, General Electric (GE), and Cepheid). In the past six months, we have conducted over 8000 HIV and hepatitis C screening tests as part of our Gilead Pharmaceuticals FOCUS program, and our patient navigators (Justin Burns and Elena Wojcik) have worked diligently around the clock to successfully link seropositive patients to lifesaving treatment. We are currently working with Gilead to expand this program to other clinical sites during AY 2019. Dr. Joe Minardi and Mindy Sharon have continued to grow our strong partnership with GE. Recently, Dr. Minardi and his team, held a very successful GE sponsored workshop in the WVU Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) center on ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. This workshop was viewed in real time by a national and international audience with more workshops planned in the future. We will continue to very closely with GE during the remainder of AY 2018 and in AY 2019 on the development, testing, and implementation of new sonographic technologies that provide exciting opportunities to enhance patient care. As flu season approaches, we have implemented our second Cepheid sponsored study in the emergency department that seeks to develop point-of-care PCR testing for influenza and respiratory virus syndrome with a third study planned for implementation in AY 2019. Additionally, we accepted an invitation to join the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) Network. The goal of the SIREN Network is to improve the outcomes of patients with neurologic, cardiac, respiratory and hematologic emergencies by identifying effective treatments given in the earliest stages of care. We will be serving as a spoke site to the University of Pittsburgh SIREN hub. Our Clinical Research Specialist, Tehseen Sarwar, is currently spearheading efforts to implement various SIREN protocols at WVU. To reflect the diversity of the emergent conditions we study, our group’s name has been changed to West Virginia University Department of Emergency Medicine Center for Acute Care Research. On an exciting note, Dr. Danielle Davidov and her husband James, welcomed Jonah Potts to the DEM family on November 8 th !! By far, my largest personal blessing is the amazing research team that I have had the honor of leading that is directly responsible for the successes of our scholarly mission. To this end, I would like to offer a personal “thank you”, and wish all faculty and staff a safe and restful holiday season with family and friends. NEWS & AWARDS SAEM abstract submissions will be accepted from November 1, 2017 – January 2, 2018. If you are interested in submitting an abstract for consideration to the conference, please let the Research Team know! We have services to assist with the development/writing for submission. Dr. Shaver is the Vice Chair of Education and Training, as well as Residency Program Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Her current research interests include resident education and recruitment, quality improvement education, and medical education. She is currently drafting a

manuscript related to her project on the AAMC’s newly implemented Standardized Video Interview (SVI) for medical students applying to Emergency Medicine residency. In addition, Dr. Shaver recently submitted two abstracts for consideration to the 2018 CORD Annual Meeting with her partner in crime, Dr. Chris Kiefer. As a working mom of two beautiful children, Madison and Rylan, Dr. Shaver is a prime example of the successful balance between clinical shifts, education, research & scholarship, and family life. The Research Division would like to give kudos to Dr. Shaver for all of her hard work and progress she has made in the realm of research and scholarship this past year!
