A Message from the Department Head

2

Best regards to you,

Mary Ellen Bock

Dear Alums and Friends,

One of the hardest things to do is keep up with thepace of change in our field. An important resourcefor students and faculty here is the array of differentseminar series that the department supports. Theseseries of talks play an important role in broadlyeducating students and keeping faculty abreast ofnew developments in our field. The speakers fromacross the campus and around the world bringvitality and new ideas to us. These speakers oftenoffer clarity and insight not available in publishedworks and they allow us to ask questions on thespot, a luxury not to be had when we are reading an

Calendar of Coming Events

The 2001 Joint Statistical Meetings will be held inAtlanta, Georgia, August 5-9, 2001. The annualPurdue Alumni and Friends Dinner will be heldnearby at the home of Professor Brani Vidakovic ofGeorgia Institute of Technology on Monday, August6, 2001. For reservations send e-mail [email protected].

The 2001 Fall Department Picnic will be held onSunday, August 26 at Fort Ouiatenon HistoricalPark in West Lafayette, Indiana.

article or a book. Some speakers inform us aboutchanging job prospects and their experience with thebroad range of opportunities available to thoseeducated in the statistical sciences.

For Fall 2001 six different seminar series, most ofwhich meet weekly, will be offered to students andfaculty in statistics as well as in other departmentsand to visitors who come to the campus expressly tohear the speakers. (You are all welcome to come tothe seminars. You may have to come early for a seatin the extremely popular talks.) They include oneseries principally in mathematical statistics, one inprobability, one in bioinformatics, one in computa-tional finance, one on the role of statistics in thepharmaceutical industry, and one which is an intro-duction to research areas of the statistics andmathematics faculty at an introductory overviewlevel. There are many other special colloquiaas well and they can be found on the departmentweb page. (I even learn from the ones I cannotattend by reading the abstracts, which are also onthe web page.)

Statistical Consulting Service (SCS)http://www.stat.purdue.edu/consulting/website/

Statisticians in the Statistical Consulting Service(SCS) play a critical role in research throughout theuniversity. Graduate student Andrès U. Vargascame to the SCS in 1998 for help with his researchon nonverbal creativity. His work focused onstudents with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disor-der (AD/HD) from different cultural and linguisticbackgrounds. Statistical consultant RebeccaAmbler, who was a statistics graduate student, andProfessor Tom Kuczek met with Andrès and hismajor professor, Sydney Zentall. They helpeddesign a study which was implemented in a fewelementary schools in Portland, Oregon.

Andrès died of cancer on October 16, 1999. Afterhis death, several of Andrès colleagues under thedirection of Professor Zentall, completed his doc-

toral research and his dissertation. Statisticalconsultant Jayson Wilbur, who is a statisticsgraduate student, analyzed the data and helpedinterpret the results. Zentall was awarded a Ph.D. ineducation posthumously on May 12, 2001.

The Purdue Exponent quoted Vargas wife Tara assaying Andrès believed so much in education itsjust really meaningful to have that goal finished andhave the circle complete. I think that the Ph.D. wasprobably the most important step in his life.

The SCS is honored to have played a small part inthis effort.

Each Fall the Department of Statistics hosts the seminarseries on Bioinformatics, chaired by Professor RebeccaDoerge. This year we concentrated on the statisticalissues involved in gene expression data produced frommicroarray experiments (www.stat.purdue.edu). Outsideexperts in the areas of molecular genetics, genomics, statistics, and chemistry were invited to speak to ourdiverse audience. The overwhelming response to thissubject, by scientists from four schools and at least 15departments, encouraged us to continue the seminar seriesthrough the Spring semester. The format of the Springseminar was kept the same, but the speakers came from

within the Purdue community and usually took two seminars to demonstrate their experiments, work withstatisticians and present their results. We are excited about the level of interest in Bioinformatics at Purdue, and look forward to another semester of intriguing and energetic seminars.

She increased her involvement by installing andmaintaining web servers in several county extension offices, and when ACNmerged with two additional computer support departments in Agriculture tobecome Agriculture Information Systems around 1998, Leslie became theprimary webmaster of the Agriculture department.

Currently Leslie is upgrading the web server software and developing webpages for the Computational Finance program.

Our Windows NT lab PC's have all been replaced by newer, faster PC'swith large monitors. They've also had Windows 2000 installed in placeof Windows NT. Four new laptops were purchased for general instruc-tional use and have been put to good use in the classroom. Upgrades tocomputers in graduate student offices continue. There was the usualround of software upgrades including operating system upgrades and theaddition of Mathematica 4.0. Our new digital camera will simplify theaddition of images to our departmental web page or into other publisheddocuments. Our new webmaster, Leslie Arvin, began work late thisspring and is working towards making improvements on our StatisticsDepartment Web pages.

News from the GSOBy Aarti Sriram

As another year comes to an end, we take time toreflect in all that has transpired in our wonderfuldepartment. Part of this memorable year has in-volved the various activities that the GraduateStudent Organization provided for the department. The year started with a poolside party to welcomenew students to our department, graciously hostedby Professor Steve and Joan Samuels. Asstudents wiled away the last few hours of summer, lounging by the poolside, getting acquainted with thenew students, GSO committee members beganplanning events that would be part of the upcomingyear.

The first GSO meeting, in September, added a newmember to our committee. The committee did thinkof randomly appointing someone to the job, butfigured that holding off pizza till someone volun-teered would be a more democratic way. Aftersome thought (and hunger), John R. Stevens, afirst year PhD student, volunteered for the position, and joined the GSO committee in preparing eventsfor our student body to enjoy. Every month, GSOhad a pair of student and faculty speakers give halfhour talks on a subject that they favored. PapaJohns pizza followed for dinner. In terms of speakers for the past year, GSO wasfortunate enough to get great faculty speakers suchas Professors Tom Sellke, Bruce Craig,Rebecca Doerge, Frederi Viens, Robert Lund, and Dr. Chien-Feng Chen, a senior statisticianfrom Eli Lilly. Amongst student speakers were OlgaKorosteleva, Mik Black, Brian Munneke,Kiseop Lee, Jayson Wilbur and BhramarMukherjee. The talks covered a spectrum oftopics, from probability theorems, to how to prepareyourself for a job interview, to biostatistics, tomathematical finance and also time series. Profes-sor Doerge provided a very informative talk onhow to land a job, providing students with tips onhow to get jobs in academia, industry, as well as

summer internships. In addition to this how to get agreat job talk, Dr. Chen spoke about recruitmentat Lilly. The Ph.D. students, who presented, need tobe commended on the talks they gave. This year weactually had students volunteer to give talks, ratherthan GSO having to prod a student to present a talk. The talks primarily related to a small aspect of thestudents dissertation and were presented in a veryunderstandable manner.

The next event supported by the GSO was theentertainment at the annual Holiday Party. This year, the party was held at The Trails. Nels Grevstad,Mik Black and Brad Johnson serenaded thecrowd with some Irish bluegrass music. Leming Qualso wooed the group by singing a song in Chinese. The grand finale was a game of Charades; the gamehad the contestants acting out either characteristicsof certain professors, or different statistical con-cepts. Professor Deely acted out the concept ofRandom Walk.

With that came to an end the fall term and studentsand faculty went on their respective vacations tocome back fairly refreshed for a brand-new semes-ter. In addition to the monthly talks two major eventsdawned on GSOs calendar. The first major eventthat GSO sponsored was the Spring Picnic. Thisyearly event was held at Happy Hollow Park, towards the end of April. Both students and facultycame to relax, get some sun, and enjoy a barbecue. Some faculty and students joined in a game ofvolleyball, while others sat around and chatted.Towards the end of the picnic, Brad (on the guitar)and Nels (on the banjo) once again serenaded uswith a variety of different music. Our final task forthe year was to invite a famous statistician as ouroutside guest speaker for the year. With a unanimousvote from the students, Professor Morris Eatonfrom the University of Minnesota was invited.Professor Eaton, a distinguished scholar in

multivariate statistics, gave a talk on PredictiveDistributions in the Multivariate Normal Case . Thetalk was well attended by both students and faculty. The final task of GSO was to elect a group ofwonderful representatives to take over our job ofordering pizza and organizing talks for the next year. The three students who were elected wereDachuang Cao, Nels Grevstad and RyanWiegand. We wish them luck for the upcomingyear. Finally, GSO would like to thank everyone for

coming to our events and making them successes.Good luck to all the graduating Masters and Ph.D.students, we wish you tons of luck for your futureendeavors.

Before the beginning of fall classes, the department sponsors different activities for its new graduate stu-dents. The first is a pizza party one week before the start of classes where the new students meet eachother as well as a few members of the faculty and staff. They are given information about the departmentand important things they will need to know. The pizza party was held Sunday, August 13, 2000.

The second activity is a reception in honor of the new students. This is usually held in the MathematicsLibrary where they are officially welcomed by the department faculty, students and staff. The receptionwas held Friday, August 18, 2000.

The third activity is a mixer. This year Professor Steve Samuels and his wife, Joan, hosted the party at theirbeautiful home. As you can see, it was a perfect day for sitting by the pool visiting or swimming. The mixerwas held on Saturday, August 19, 2000.
