WELCOME

Professor Giulio Vesperini Head of Department

The Department of Linguistic and Literary, Historical, Philosophical and Legal Studies – DISTU, offers five different study courses (one three-year Bachelor’s, three Master’s, one single-cycle Master’s), in the fields of languages, law, political

communication and the protection and enhancement of the archaeological, historical and artistic heritage. Details of the course objectives, the specific subjects, and career opportunities that graduates can aspire to are available for each of the active courses. The general aim of the department, which all the courses reflect, is to train students and promote the development of research into topics that contribute to the understanding of the character and dynamics of the new institutional world in which we live. Its multi-faceted linguistic, archaeological and historic-artistic dimensions foster a desire to understand the historic context of events that constituted this process of change. The variety of disciplinary methods is critical to this programme. Methods include the analysis and dynamics of the institutional cultural European and global environment, using a variety of investigative techniques and different perspectives, with a focus on issues relating to the knowledge of archaeological, historical and artistic heritage. The expansion of the internationalization of research, in line with measures implemented for years by teachers of the Department, strengthens relationships with research groups working in the same

directions in Italy and abroad. In addition to traditional teaching, the Department provides students with a variety of high standard learning experiences. The Languages Unit provides services for learning foreign languages for all the courses offered at the University and, in particular, for students of the undergraduate and master’s programmes: Modern Languages and Cultures, and Languages and Culture for International Communication. The Languages Unit has four multimedia laboratories for this purpose, all equipped with video projector and workstations. The Computer Aided Written Italian Language Workshop (LISA! And LISA+), enables students to practise the writing and processing of multimedia texts of a professional nature.The Workshop of Italian Multimedia Semiotics and Linguistics (SLIM) enables teachers and students to work together to store and manage data in a digital format for educational and research purposes.

The J-ARGO Workshop enables students to acquire techniques to formulate their own legal arguments by discussing various law cases and by drafting procedural documents as part of a simulated trial.The Photography Workshop, which includes graphic layout and photographic documentation, was established in 1990 within the Faculty of Conservation of Cultural Heritage. It operates in the field of graphic and photographic documentation of archaeological materials and, more in general, in the documentation in the field of Heritage. The Workshop is also used for cartographic editing carried out with the aid of digital photogrammetric systems, and acts as a support for teaching activities and seminars.The Natural Language Processing Workshop (NLP) guarantees the acquisition of competences related to the electronic processing and analysis of oral and written texts. Students will learn the theoretical aspects and they will be able to practice language database construction by learning to manage the selection criteria and the use of primary text material (for example, the transcription

of oral texts for various purposes), language revision which varies depending on the objective: verbalisation or institutional deposit, linguistic-semiotic analysis, marketing, etc.), methods for the representation and encoding of linguistic-textual information.The course includes a theoretical introduction followed by practical work. DISTU is one of 180 Italian Departments of Excellence which will receive extra funding for five years for an innovative research project. The list of winning projects was written at the end of 2017 by ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del sistema Universitario e della Ricerca), the Italian agency for the evaluation of the university and research systems. The list was published by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research on 10th January 2018 (http://www.miur.gov.it/web/guest/dipartimenti-di-eccellenza). DISTU’s Excellence Project (Progetto di Eccellenza) has been a contender in the sector of legal sciences and it has capitalised on the interdisciplinary nature of this department. DISTU is the only department in Italy that combines the historical-philosophical sciences, languages and literature, linguistics and the historical-artistic sciences with the law. Therefore, the project has become a common point of reference for the study of the European institutional and cultural environment.In the next five years, research projects will focus on European convergence and integration processes over the course of several centuries. Research will be linked to the political-institutional and legislative areas (regulatory traditions and the impact that European and international law have on Italian law) as well as on the cultural relationships in Europe (from language connections to intellectual and philosophical connections, from art to religion).

Educational goalsThe undergraduate programme in Modern Languages and Culture (L-11) aims to equip graduates with an intercultural education in response to the needs of contemporary, social and professional society, with particular attention to relations between Europe and the rest of the world. The three study plans available allow students to build their own customised study plan by taking the 19 exams of the three-year course in the linguistic-cultural areas that interest them the most: the degree course offers three-year or two-year programmes in French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese and Russian (the courses include literature exams and philology exams). Students can then expand their competences with general and Italian linguistics, contemporary history, digital humanities, economics and law. All courses offer materials for distance learning on the teaching platform UniTusMoodle (http://moodle.unitus.it/moodle/), which allows students to interact with the teachers via the Internet and access exercises and other teaching tools designed for individual study.

organizations operating globally. This degree gives students immediate access to the postgraduate degree course Master of Arts in Languages and Culture for International Communication LM-37 and all postgraduate training courses expressly dedicated to linguistic and cultural mediation.

AssessmentBefore students can sit the exams in Language and Translation and Language and Literature, target language exams are given by Language Assistants (CEL), in cooperation with the Languages Unit of the University. The language exams assess students’ linguistic competence according to the parameters of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Each student has a personal record of their linguistic development (Language Passport) in which, for each academic year, the level reached for each target language is recorded. Subsequent to the successful outcome of the language exams, the course tutor assesses students with written and oral examinations to ascertain their expertise in the various specific subjects.

Innovations in the study programmeThe Languages Unit now offers Chinese studies in answer to the continual growth of the social, political and economic relations with Asia, which has given rise to an urgent demand for training in relation to the Chinese language and culture. Along with the Chinese Language course that students will attend over a period of at least three years, students will also learn about China’s rich culture, its history and its current political and economic situation. These disciplines will provide them with as complete a picture as possible of the cultural reality of contemporary China. Other courses on the history and culture of Asia provide essential support, to expand the range of studies to a broader geopolitical context than that of Europe, and to better understand the cultures and relations between the states bordering Europe and Asia. In 2015, UNITUS established a partnership with the Confucius Institute, which fostered and is going to foster cultural and scientific exchanges as well as study programmes in China. Starting from academic year 2017-2018, the teaching of Russian culture has been enhanced by separating the teaching of literature from that of language. ‘The Didactics of Italian with new technologies’ has been added as an optional exam.

AssessmentBefore students can sit the exams in Language and Translation and Language and Literature, target language exams are given by Language Assistants (CEL), in collaboration with the Languages Unit of the University. The language exams assess students’ linguistic competence according to the parameters of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). Each student has a personal record of their linguistic development (Language Passport) in which, for each academic year, the level reached for each target language is recorded. Subsequent to the successful outcome of the language exams, the course tutor examines the student with written and oral examinations to ascertain their expertise in the various specific subjects.

CurriculaThe second level degree course allows students to choose one of two curricula:

Literature and civilisation CurriculumAllows students to acquire in-depth competences in the literature of the different languages and in their possible historical and social links.

Cultural activity and productionIncludes the integration of competences in literature and in languages with competences related to the or-ganisation of integrated activities and cultural produc-tions with IT resources.

Educational goalsStarting from academic year 2016-2017, the Department of Economics and Business (DEIM) and the Department of Linguistic and Literary, Historical, Philosophical and Legal Studies (DISTU) of the University of Tuscia are activating a second level degree course in Political Science, International Security and Public Communications (LM-62).The course is designed both to enable three-year degree students of Political Science and International Relations to complete their academic program, and to offer three-year degree graduates from other courses of study (e.g. L-11, L-14, L-16, L-18, L-20) to deepen their knowledge in a field of interest closely related to their undergraduate studies. The second level degree course in Political Science, International Security and Public Communications offers a multidisciplinary approach. The themes of politics, economics, law, sociology and history interact with the language of public communications.The two year course includes twelve core subjects. In the second year, there are a series of options, which include theoretical studies and practical activities, to enable students to focus on two different areas:{ issues of public communications, including the

knowledge of public and political languages, the mechanisms of public communication and the media system by means of which we communicate in today’s society;

{ international issues, including geopolitics and international security, relations between states and the processes that signal the emergence of political or military issues which extend beyond national boundaries.

In addition, sixteen CFUs are granted for two foreign languages and these enable students to attend the Writing Workshop, through which they may gain full language proficiency both in Italian and in two foreign languages (English is a second language of the EU). These are essential skills to prepare students for their future professional careers. Students will be granted 29 CFUs to those students who wish to continue their studies with the LM-62 course and who attend

Educational goalsThe second level degree course in Law offers a solid, comprehensive and balanced foundation in law, with the aim of training the future country leaders in the industrial, governmental organisations, professional and research sectors. In particular, this degree course aims at:{ giving students an interdisciplinary legal training

that is focussed on Europe and has an international perspective;

{ providing students a good institutional preparation combined to a didactic methodology that strengthens analysis and case-study thanks to the cooperation of professionals who already work in different sectors (judges, layers, public administrators; directors of the legal offices of small and medium-sized businesses and more).

This knowledge allows students to understand and interpret legal rules, their evolving dynamics and their interactions with the social and institutional framework.The Master’s in Law also offers the necessary intellectual tools to process texts, documents and legal acts by making use of language skills (particularly English) and computer skills gained during their studies.Students can spend some time abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, the USAC initiatives and the ‘international semester’, which started in 2018. During this semester, some subjects are taught entirely in English.

Career opportunitiesThe second level degree course in Law gives graduates the knowledge, skills and qualifications needed to continue studying after their degree with a master’s degree or a PhD or to start working straight away. A law degree will enable students to participate in the exams to access the courts, advocacy and notary services. It also offers employment possibilities in business, public administration and private institutions, both national and international. The degree course includes law workshops aimed

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

PhD in Rights of European and global markets. Crises, rights and regulations

The doctoral programme offers highly qualified training in legal sciences applied to the study of the regulation of the economy. The programme focuses mainly on aspects of public and private law concerning the exchange relations, sanctions and the phenomenon of the internationalization and Europeanization of the law.

PhD in Historical and Heritage Sciences*

The course promotes qualified and innovative research in the field of socio-historic sciences and cultural heritage exploring the history of human societies and cultural production both tangible and intangible, and specifically artistic, spanning the period from antiquity to contemporary times. The comprehension of historical and archival sources, archaeological testimonies and artistic expression requires their placement in a landscape marked by evidence, memories and legacy, while making use of diagnostic disciplines and information technologies. A PhD in Historical and Heritage Sciences enables students to carry out research at Italian and foreign universities, but it will also enable them to assume positions with public and private institutes, restoration institutes, museums, research institutes, publishing houses, documentation and cataloguing centres. The skills acquired can be an additional qualification for employment in journalism, public communication and cultural action.

Located in the San Carlo Campus, the Language Service Unit is part of the DISTU Department. It provides foreign language learning support for all degree courses available in this Department. Students of the degree courses belonging to the Department are offered preparatory language courses and activities, in keeping with the Language and Translation requirements included in the curricula. The Languages Unit organizes and administers placement tests to verify language entry levels and hosts certification bodies for tests to obtain some of the required international certificates, CAPLE (Portuguese) and HSK3 (Chinese) [info [email protected]]. The Unit has four computer labs (all equipped with video projector and individual computer stations). Students can use a wide range of audiovisual, computer programmes and advanced teaching tools for self-study and improvement of the target languages.The Unit has a cutting-edge, multimedia teaching platform - UnitusMoodle (http: // moodle.unitus.it) - which provides additional support for the users’ activities and study methodologies. Moodle is an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is an open source web platform for e-learning, designed to create and manage online courses with ample possibilities of interaction between student and teacher. Almost every language test available is accessible on

the Moodle system. The labs are often used by the foreign language teaching assistants (CEL) and they are the working environment of the lab technicians. The work of the language assistants is guided by the Language and Translation course tutors, as well as the Coordinator of the Languages Unit. Their work is based on practical and communicative language learning techniques. The course tutors of Language and Translation or Language and Literature, however, focus on issues relating to translation, inter-linguistic relationships, and the cultural and literary aspects of the countries where the target language is the official language. In addition, the Languages Unit carries out language assessment to certify the level of competence attained by students in the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking - in the manner prescribed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In this regard, the Passport for Languages has been introduced, to complete the student language training programme, in which students record their language achievements. The two language syllabi (three year degree course and second level degree course) are available for download. They offer a description of the competences students need. More information on the passport and its uses can be found on www.unitusdistu.net - the Languages Unit website.

and non-attending students could be introduced. For example, a teacher could evaluate attendance to lectures, seminars and workshops for the purpose of the exam.

Straight after enrolment, each student is required to compile his or her individual study plan.The study plan is the list of exams the student intends to take during his three-year or five-year study programme. Filling in the curriculum is essential to be able to book exams. In addition, in order to book an exam it is compulsory to complete the anonymous questionnaire regarding the teaching quality of the subject to be tested.Each course of study (undergraduate, master’s or single-cycle) offers one or more study programmes that can be read and downloaded. The study programme can be planned by choosing the courses offered in each student’s enrolment year.The study programme can be completed online, from the student portal: http://portalestudenti.unitus.it/Default.aspx. In order to access, it is necessary to use the personal credentials (user name and password). Once the form has been filled in, students will have to validate their study plans online and the system will confirm whether there are no errors in the form itself.The student’s personal study programme can be modified during the course, in accordance with the module choices and the obligation to sit specific preparatory exams before others.All requests for changes to the personal study programme that are not accepted by the student portal must be submitted for approval to the course study Council.

The curricula proposed in the course programmes all have a number of compulsory core subjects, together with related and complementary modules offering a choice of subjects of equal credits, in addition to subjects that students can choose, as long as they are in line with the course and award the required number of credits. For the Master’s Degree in Law, the chosen module exams can be taken at any time, provided that they have been preceded by at least three of the required exams.
