Questions - MBA Department Q1: What is Span of Management?
Ans: Span of management refers to the number of subordinates a supervisor can control or manage. The span
of management of the average manager in an organization determines the width of the organization as seen
when viewing the organizational chart. Span of management may be narrow or broad depending on the number
of subordinates on average a manger has under his supervision in an organization.
Q2: What are the barriers in communication?
Ans: The five key barriers to communication in an organization are language, cultural diversity, gender
differences, status differences and physical separation. These barriers to communication are specific items that
can distort or prevent communication within an organization. The ability for a company to recognize the
communication issues and come to a resolution can drastically improve working conditions, sales and
organizational culture.
Q3: What is employee engagement?
Ans: Employee engagement is the extent to which employees feel passionate about their jobs, are committed to
the organization, and put discretionary effort into their work. Employee engagement is a part of employee
retention and is not same as employee satisfaction.
Q4: What is the difference between training and management development?
Ans: The difference between training and management development tends to lie in timing. Typically, training is
the process by which people are taught critical skills, knowledge to carry out their current responsibilities and is
for short time duration. While management development is an organized activity in which the manpower of the
organization learns and grow, involves behavioural improvement, self-assessment and it has a long-term
perspective. These are two major functions of the Human Resource Management and both the activities aim at
improving the performance and productivity of the employees.
Q5: What is Organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB)?
Ans: Organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) is a term that encompasses anything positive and constructive
that employees do, of their own volition, which supports co-workers to have in their behavior a team spirit which
benefits the company. It describes a person's voluntary commitment within an organization or company that is
not part of his or her contractual tasks. OCB has been studied since the late 1970s but over the last few decades,

interest in these behaviors has increased substantially. Organizational behavior has been linked to overall
organizational effectiveness, thus these types of employee behaviors have important consequences in the
workplace.
Q6: Initial Public Offering (IPO)
Ans: An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the first sale of privately owned equity (stock or shares) in a company via
the issue of shares to the public and other investing institutions. In other words an IPO is the first sale of stock by
a private company to the public.
Q7.Net Present Value (NPV)
Ans: NPV is a significant measurement in business investment decisions. NPV is essentially a measurement of
all future cash flow that will be derived from a particular investment minus the cost of the investment. Logically if
a proposition has a positive NPV then it is profitable and is worthy of consideration. If negative then it's
unprofitable and should not be pursued. NPV provides a consistent method of comparing propositions and
investment opportunities from a simple capital/investment/profit perspective.
Q.8.What is Market Segmentation?
Ans: Markets are Heterogeneous; Segmentation divides them into Homogeneous Sub-Units: Market for the
product is nothing but the aggregate of the consumers of that product. Consumers of a product also vary in
needs, motives, and characteristics and buying behavior. It means that the market for the product is a
heterogeneous unit. Marketers break up the heterogeneous market for a product into several sub-units or sub
markets which are relatively more homogeneous within itself. This breaking up helps tap the market better. This
act of disaggregating a market into a number of sub-markets/sub-units of buyers which has relatively more
homogeneous characteristics is known as Market Segmentation.
Q.9.Explain the concept of Product Positioning?
Ans: Product Differentiation and Product Positioning are related concepts and together constitute a major
decision area in Product Management and in Marketing as a whole. Positioning is the act of fixing the locus of
the Product Offer in the minds of the target consumers. In Positioning, the Marketer decides how and around
what parameters, the product offer will be placed before the target consumers.
Q.10: Explain the Tangibility Spectrum?
Ans: The major factor that differentiates a Service from a Product is its Intangibility. Marketers try to attach an
element of service even with the products to attract customers and enjoy their loyalty.
In the above spectrum, goods and services are represented on a continuum with highly tangible goods on the
extreme left and highly intangible services on the extreme right. Thus the bundle of goods and services is falling
in the middle of the continuum. If a product is more tangible in nature, it is easier to evaluate in terms of quality,
suitability and if it is more intangible than vice-versa.
Prof. (Dr) H K Bedi, Campus Director, SOM, JIET in conversation with Ms. Megha Pareek, MBA III
semester
Q1. As a successful professional what do you suggest is important for a professional for
his/her career growth?
Ans. I have always concentrated on continuous improvement in discharging my responsibilities
wherever and whatever I do in a way to be accountable for results be it transparency, accuracy in timing
or my duties that I have to perform with passion.
Q2. What according to your view is the scope available for management students for a
successful career?
Ans.It is not only for management students, rather for all the students who are ready to struggle for
career, there is always enough scope for achievement throughout life.
Q3.What are the expectations set by the industry from professional MBA students?
Ans. Corporate world is very specific about personality growth that is application oriented in context of
specific profession. Depending upon the quality of excellence in personal growth, any student can meet
the expectations of the corporate world.
Q4. What is the 'Success Mantra' for your successful life?
Ans. Time Management, transparency and dedication.
