ORIGIN OF DEPARTMENT

• 2nd April, 1956

• Dr S. Balaparameswararao - posted as Assistant professor of Surgery

• 12 beds

• Seeds of neurosurgery sowed in Bobbili Ward ( part of the present general surgery septic ward and plastic surgery ward)

• First super-specality department of AMC

• First neurosurgical unit of Andhra Pradesh

• The Government sanctioned Rs. 3000/- for equipment and

one House Surgeon for the Department.

• Post of Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery was created on

17/09/1956

• May 1959 to November 1960 - UK deputation under

Colombo plan - Dr B Dayananda Rao was visiting as

neurosurgeon from Hyderabad.

• Upon return from UK he was appointed as Professor of

Thoracic Surgery performing Neurosurgery

• First professorial chair of Neurosurgery was established in

July 1961 and he was appointed as first Professor of

Neurosurgery

• NEURO-RADIOLOGY -

• period of angiograms, ventriculograms and myelograms for diagnostic studies - only on Thursdays (8 am- 2 pm) - till 1998 the procedures were continued

• SURGERY

• Two days a week in EBDEN OT

• No proper operation table / no provisions for sitting position

• Surgeon often doubled up as anaesthetist

• Frequent power failures used to mar the progress of surgeries

DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY

• From 1956- 1974 he held the reigns of Neurosurgery department

• Under his tenure the concept of neurosurgery originated, evolved and flourished.

• During that period at AMC, Visakhapatnam, he was a Neurologist, Neuroradiologist, Neuropathologist and a Neurosurgeon ----- all in one.

• In the later part he was joined by able assistants - Prof. Chalapati Rao, Prof. Dinakar, Prof. Subba Rao, Dr.Pullareddy.

• Against so many odds, Waging so many wars, Bearing so much of criticism, the Department under the powerful Stewardship of Dr.Balaparameswararao transformed from a theoretical concept into a practical reality and went on to do well.

• In 1974 - got transferred to Hyderabad

ERA OF 1975-83

• After Dr.Balaparameswararao left, the department was virtually rudderless from March 74 to July 74.

• Disorganised and about to disintegrate, at which time a young brilliant neurosurgeon by name Bhavaraju Subba Rao, armed with a M.Ch Degree, fresh out of All India Institute of Mental Health (NIMHANS), Banglore, he managed his best to keep things under one roof and maintain the order until Prof.Chalapati Rao took over as Professor and HOD of Dept of Neurosurgery in 1975.

• During his time, the concept of

microneurosurgery was introduced in a humble way with an operating microscope and micro-instruments with the help of Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

• 1979- A formal inspection by MCI, under chairmanship by K V Mathai allowed the dept to start M.Ch neurosurgery post graduation.

• 1981- 31st National conference of NSI along with Silver Jubilee function commemorating 25 years of existence of the dept. celebrated.

• Prof.K.Chalapati Rao

• During the time of Prof. Chalapathi rao, to support the neurosurgical services, Dept of Neurology was started in 1977 under the stewardship of Prof V.Satyanarayana

• After the NSI conference, an endowment fund of 25,000 Rupees was instituted by Dept of Neurosurgery headed by a committee, handed over to Andhra University for academic activities

• During the later part of his tenure, NS unit shifted from historical Bobbili ward to present OP block (2nd floor).

• He continued until 1983 after which time Prof I.Dinakar, the ablest Asst. Professor of S.Balaparameswararao, took over.

1983-85• Prof I Dinakar, does not need

introduction. as the prodigal son of AMC, best distinguished as best outgoing student of AMC, armed with M.Ch from CMC, Vellore

• Came back to join as Asst professor under DR S.Balaparameswararao and became professor, took reigns in 1983 till 1985

• His era was marked with intense academic activities and paper publications

• 70 papers in National and International publications during his tenure in AMC. ( 304 publications to his credit)

• Introduction of Conray for ventriculography.

• In 1985 he was called to NIMS to head the Dept of Neurosurgery

1985-92• From 1985 Prof G.B.Rajendra

Prasad took over as Prof and HOD of Department

• The department acquired the true academic flavour under his stewardship when Dr.N.Subramanyam joined as first neurosurgery M.Ch postgraduate in 1986.

• A separate postoperative ward for neurosurgery was started during this time.

• The Department of Neurosurgery grew in stature, rendering yeomen services to the neurologically ill, of the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, the neighbouring Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh.

• From 1992-93 for a short-while Dr.N.Subrahmanayam took over as the Professor of Dept of Neurosurgery.

1994-2000

• 1994-2000, the dept was headed by Prof.B.Subba Rao.

• During his period a separate air conditioned pg seminar/library room was opened.

• Makeshift second operation theatre in addition to existing Ebden OT

• The first AP neuro-scientists meet was held in Visakhapatnam in1994 conducted by neurology and neurosurgery departments together and a grant for endowment lectures initiated.

Prof.B.Subba Rao

• For the first time weekly seminars and case discussions were initiated along with the help of Dept of neurology and practising neurologists and neurosurgeons in the city

• He laid the seeds of Neuro-club with weekly seminars involving faculty of Neurology as well as the city neurologists and neurosurgeons

• He inculcated active interest in Cranio-vertebral junction and anterior cervical spine surgeries in the postgraduates and working neurosurgerons.

• 7th A.P neuroscientists conference was conducted under his regime in 2000.

• Subsequently he got transferred as Supdt. of MGM Hospital

2000-2005• In 2000 Prof.N.Subrahamanayam

took over as Professor and HOD.

• Restructuring of neurosurgery wards with separate head injury section.

• Two fully functional operating rooms for neurosurgery in EBDEN OT complex

• 54th Annual conference of NSI along with golden jubilee celebrations were conducted at Visakhapatnam in 2005.

• Prof.N.Subrahamanayam

Bought new operating microscope. Till then we did surgery with magnifying loop.

• MCI Recognition for MCh degree in Neurosurgery, AMC

• Installation of spiral CT scan was additional boom to the dept of neurosurgery in 2001

• Active work iN trans-sphenoidal surgeries were highlighted during this period from 2005-2013

2005-2013

• In May 2005, Prof.K.Vishnuprasad took over as Prof and HOD of Department of Neurosurgery.

• The department meta-morhposised into a trend-setter and a leader by acquiring the latest neurosurgical armamentorium like Karl-zeiss and Moller-Wedel neurosurgical operating microscopes, Karl-storz Neuro-endoscope, Stryker and Medtronics High speed drills and Craniotomes.

• MRI services were started in KGH.

• Trauma care centre with twin operation theatre for neuro, ortho and poly trauma cases.

• State of the art ICU with ventilator support ( maintained as a CMC,Vellore model) available round the clock with the support of Govt of India, Ministry of Health

• Addition of 2 more post graduation seats - making number of postgraduates admitted every year to 3.

• Seminar hall was modernised and dedicated to founder professor Dr.Balaparameswararao.

• In 2012, 19th APNSA conference was conducted.

• He became the principal of AMC, Academic DME and finally Director of Medical Education.

2013 - present

• In 2013, Prof K.Satyavaraprasad took over as Professor and HOD of Department of Neurosurgery.

• The Dept of Neurosurgery and King George Hospital was declared as Level I trauma centre for trauma pilot project by NTSI in collaboration with AAPI

• MCI recognition of three M.Ch neurosurgery seats

• Transoral procedure & lateral mass fixation for Craniovertebral Junction established as a routine procedure

• Awake craniotomy,

• Endoscopic discectomy - regular procedure

• ETV for slit ventricle syndrome

• Endoscope assisted MVD

• CUSA - CP angle surgeries, pituitary surgeries and meningiomas made easy.

• Neurosurgery department shifted to superspecality block.

• State of the art 20 bedded ICU

• Three well equipped operating theatres with all the gadgets.

• Bed strength of about 120.

• Separate 25 bedded neuro-trauma ward
