Classschedule:Mondays,Wednesdays,Fridays–1:30to2:20pmClasslocation:ThornbroughBuilding,Room1200(THRN1200)Calendardescription:Thiscoursepresentsthebasicconceptsofhealthanddiseaseinpopulations.Methodsusedindescriptiveandanalyticepidemiologicalstudies,includingthedesign,analysisandinterpretationofresultsforobservationalstudiesandfieldtrialsarepresented.Coursegoals:Thegoalsofthiscoursearetopresenttheepidemiologicalprinciplesandconceptsrequiredforthecollection,analysis,andinterpretationofhealthdataatthepopulationlevel.Coursecoordinator’sgoals:Tohelpfosterexcitementandinterestinepidemiology,inaclassroomenvironmentthatispositive,engagingandintellectuallychallenging.Courseobjectives:Attheendofthiscourse,thelearnershouldbeableto:

1. Describetheapplicationofepidemiologytodiseasecontrol,outbreakinvestigation,healthresearch,andcurrentpublichealth,animalhealthandOneHealthissues;

2. Identify,define,calculate,andinterpretcommonmeasuresofassociation(riskdifference,attributableriskexposed,populationattributablerisk,relativerisk,oddsratios)andmeasuresofdiseasefrequency(prevalence,risks,rates)usedinepidemiologicalresearch,andcitetheirstrengthsandlimitations;

3. Describehowtoselectappropriately-sizedsamplesfrompopulationsforsurveysandobservationalstudies;

4. Discussdiseasecausation,statisticalassociationsandcausalinference,andrankcommonstudydesignsbytheirabilitytoestablishcausality;

5. Discusstheuseofscreeningtests,identifythecriteriausedtoevaluatetests,andexplainepidemiologicalsensitivity,specificity,predictivevaluesandagreement,includinghowtocalculatethesemeasures;

6. Discussthedesign,methodologyandstrengths/limitationsofeachofthecommonobservationalandexperimentalstudytypesinepidemiology;

7. Identifyanddiscussthepotentialeffectsofcommonbiasesobservedinepidemiologicalresearch,includingvariousselectionbiases,misclassificationandconfounding;

8. Explaintheconceptsofincubationandlatentperiods,statetransitionmodels,effectiveandbasicreproductivenumbers,andgiveexamplesofstrategiestoreducethelatterfordiseasecontrol.
