Life time cancer mortality risk attributable to

the radiation exposure from a single

abdominal CT examination in a 1-year-old

child is approximately one in 550, and

approximately one in 1500 for a head CT

examination.

AJR:176, February 2001

Page 13: Department of Radiodiagnosis Audit 2013

Radiation exposure from two or three head CT scans in childhood can triple the risk of

developing brain cancer, while five to 10 such scans may triple the risk of developing

leukemia
