1 PROFESSOR ASAD RAJA, MBBS, MHSC, FRCS Chair, Department of Surgery and Consultant General Surgeon Professor Raja is a Consultant General Surgeon practicing for last 38 years. He graduated from Dow Medical College at the University of Karachi, Pakistan (1980). He completed his General Surgical Training (1981-1989) from UK and became the Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1985. He also studied and obtained a Masters Degree in Bioethics from University of Toronto. Dr Raja has subsequently worked and practiced academic surgery in developing countries. He is currently the Professor & Chairman of Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. Besides doing general and laparoscopic surgery, his special field of clinical interest and expertise are Surgical Oncology (Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery) and Trauma. He is very passionate about post-graduate surgical training, surgical skills development and bioethics education. DR ABDULKARIM ABDALLAH, MBCHB H.DIP surg(S.A) FRCS (IRE) FRCS (Eng) FACS Vice Chair, Department of Surgery and Consultant General Surgeon Dr Abdallah is a Consultant General Surgeon trained in Durban, South Africa and a subsequently in Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgery at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Dr Abdalla has practised at Aga Khan University Hospital since January 2007 and is the current Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the hospital. Previously he served as the Program Director to the department. His areas of expertise and interest include; gastroenterology, colorectal oncology, trauma and laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. He also performs upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and hemorrhoid laser surgery. DR EDWIN MOGERE, MBChB, MMed (Gen surg), MMed (Neurosurg), FCS Neurosurg (SA) Programme Director, Department of Surgery and Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Mogere is a Consultant Neurosurgeon. He obtained his Master of Medicine in General Surgery from Aga Khan University Nairobi then a Master in Neurosurgery from the University of Cape Town, he also undertook sub-specialty training in neurovascular and skull base procedures. He currently serves as Programme Director in the Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. Dr Mogere has special interests in cerebrovascular neurosurgery with the only currently functioning regional neuroendovascular service treating vascular lesions including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and embolization’s for head and neck tumours. Dr Mogere is passionate about acute stroke service in the region offering mechanical stroke thrombectomy and offers treatment for complex skull base disorders including endoscopic surgery for skull base brain tumours. Professor Raja is a Consultant General Surgeon practicing for last 38 years. He graduated from Dow Medical College at the University of Karachi, Pakistan (1980). Dr Aideed is a Consultant Urologist trained in the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa (Nelson Mandela School of Medicine. He holds a Diploma in Minimal Access Surgery from the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons and is a Fellow, Minimal Access Surgery, Wold Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. He is also a member of the Royal College of Surgeons England. DR AMIT SHANKAR, MBBS, MS(ENT), DNB, MRCS (ENT)ED, FEB - ORL FAHNSConsultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head and Neck Cancers Specialist

Dr Amit is a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist, head & neck surgeon at Aga Khan University Hospital. He did his post-graduate training at the Prestigious Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research ( PGIMER),Chandigarh, India. Dr Amit did his clinical fellowship in head & neck oncologic surgery at reputed Tata memorial hospital , Mumbai, India. Thereafter, He went to St. Paul’s Sinus Centre, Vancouver, Canada in 2012 for his clinical fellowship in Rhinology and skull base surgery and became a skilled skull base

surgeon. Dr Amit’s interests are ENT surgeries in otology, rhinology, head & neck and sleep medicine including laser but his interest lies in endoscopic sinus and skull base surgeries with or without navigation.

Dr Musyoka is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon and a specialist in head and neck cancers. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Medicine from the University of Nairobi and a specialty in Head and Neck cancers Surgery EDA hospital, Taiwan. He is also trained to surgically extirpate head and neck tumors and reconstruct using local flaps. This includes but not limited to: cancer of larynx, hypopharynx, tongue, oral cavity including those with mandibular invasion or infratemporal

extension, tongue, sinuses, head and neck skin cancer and salivary glands tumors.

DR FARIHA AKIL FAZAL, MBBS, MMed (Paeds Surgery)Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

Dr Fariha is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon. She is a graduate of University of Karachi’s under-graduate medical programme and did her internship at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her general surgery training at AKUH. She later joined the University of Nairobi’s Master in Medicine of Paediatric Surgery programme and was one of the pioneer graduates from the programme in 2016. Dr Fariha attends to a variety of Paediatric surgical emergencies including Paediatric trauma,

inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias, appendicitis, intussusception and testicular torsion. She is also trained to perform surgeries for congenital malformations involving the chest, abdomen and the genitourinary system.

DR MIRIAM MUTEBI, MBchB, Mmed surg, MSConsultant Breast Surgical Oncologist

Dr Mutebi is a Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist. She completed her General Surgery residency at Aga Khan University, Nairobi, followed by a two year fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology, which included a year in the plastic and reconstruction unit at the University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital, South Africa. Dr Mutebi worked for two years as a Graduate Surgical Oncology Research Fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and trained as a Clinical Epidemiologist and Health Systems

Researcher at Weill Cornell University, New York. Her research focus is on understanding the barriers to care for women with cancers in East Africa and in designing interventions to address these. Having a breast concern can be very troubling. Dr Mutebi and her team work closely to ensure that you understand and improve your breast health.

DR MUKUHI NG’ANG’A, MBchB, MMED (Gen Surgery), FCS (SA)Consultant General Surgeon

Dr Ng’ang’a is a Consultant General surgeon trained at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She is a member of the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa. She has worked in both urban and rural hospitals in Kenya and South Africa. Dr Ng’ang’a is a former university lecturer at the Presbyterian University of East Africa. Her interests include women’s health, breast and endocrine surgery. She is also a health columnist for the Business Daily Newspaper (Nation Media Group).

DR PARMENAS OROKO, MBchB, MMed (Surg), FRCS (Ed), FRCS (EDDEng) (Tr & Ortho)Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr Oroko is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with extensive experience in the practice of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery both in the United Kingdom and Kenya. He has worked as Lecturer, department of Orthopaedics, University of Nairobi. This was followed by full training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Glasgow and West of Scotland before taking up a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon position at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, Scotland for 13 years. He later undertook a fellowship in pelvic and acetabular

reconstruction at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada and is on the UK GMC specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. His interest and practice includes general orthopaedics and trauma surgery.

Dr Boca is a fully qualified plastic surgeon and has worked as a consultant plastic surgeon for five years in the UK. He holds a PhD in public health from Trnava University Slovakia, a post-graduate diploma in clinical research from Vienna School of Clinical Research Austria, a certificate of completion of basic surgical training from Slovak Medical University and a specialty diploma in plastic surgery from the Institute of Post-graduate Studies, Czech Republic. Dr Sitati is a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist. She completed her post-graduate training at the University of Nairobi followed by a sub-specialty training in Paediatric Ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco, USA. Dr Sitati has extensive experience working at Sabatia Eye Hospital, the only specialised eye hospital in the western part of Kenya. Managing eye conditions and performing eye surgeries in both children and adults, including cataract, glaucoma and squint surgeries. She has also

worked as the Deputy Medical Director of the Hospital. Dr Sitati has a special interest in Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) that causes blindness in premature infants. She is currently the Chair, Retinopathy of Prematurity Working Group in Kenya.

Dr Mugambi is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon. Professor Wasike did both his undergraduate and post-graduate medical studies at the University of Nairobi medical school in Kenya. He did his clinical fellowship in breast surgery at the University of Alberta in Western Canada. He won the first Avon foundation for women scholarship for Global Clinical Breast Cancer Scholars where he was attached at the Emory University Atlanta Georgia in the USA. He has worked as a military doctor in the Kenya Defence forces Medical corps previously before joining Aga

Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, where he currently heads the Breast services and teaches post-graduate students. His main interests are to provide the best breast clinical services in Kenya and in the broader Eastern region, patient health education and clinical research on breast cancer.
