5th Practice course for Clinical and Viva Examination in FRCS (Gen Surg)

10th May 2014 (Saturday)Department of Surgery/Outpatient department, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, Wales

This intensive course (mock exam) was aimed at senior trainees in General Surgery appearing for the Intercollegiate Speciality Board exam in summer/autumn this year. The mock exam, conducted by an experienced group of senior consultants, used the exact exam settings and had patients with signs and symptoms to simulate the real exam.

As in the exam, the mock exam was designed to include structured, patient-based and scenario - based interviews on clinical topics in all aspects of General Surgery.

Every candidate received:1. A clinical examination comprising of two sessions of short cases (30 mins for eachsession)2. Three oral examinations in General Surgery and Sub-speciality (30 mins), EmergencySurgery with Critical Care (30 mins) and Academic aspects (20 mins).

The candidate to examiner ratio was exactly the same as in the exam.

A total of 16 surgical trainees attended this mock exam. The feedback received was very good and the collated feedback can be found in the subsequent pages.

CommentsWell organised, good structure to vivas. It was clear that faculty were experienced in conducting FRCS examinations and feedback was appropriate.

Mr David MessengerYeovil District Hospital, Yeovil

The course was focused on mock exam practice with essential feedback which we receive in exam only as a pass or fail. The feedback in the course was useful. I hope it will help me to overcome my weaknesses before the exam.

Mr Yogesh KumarHuddersfield Royal Infirmary, Huddersfield

Excellent for a one day course. For more experience, the course should be over two days with another round of clinicals on day two with more patients in transplant, breast and endocrine.

Mr Niteen TapuriaDarent Valley Hospital, Dartford

Relevant to exam. With more time (i.e., extra day), could have seen some more cases.Mr Vikas Kumar
