Pathophysiological research

The role of the antioxidant system in the development of metabolic diseases and their laboratory

diagnosis. In the frame of this research, mainly metabolic disorders of ruminants and the

diagnostic laboratory methods are studied. In developing chick embryo and newborn calves

characteristic changes in the development of the antioxidant mechanisms are also studied.

Antioxidant parameters are investigated in adult ruminants, as well.

Clinical research

This research field includes the following subjects: pathogenesis and diagnostics of liver and

pancreatic diseases, cardiology of small animals, ultrasonographic and endoscopic diagnosis of

internal diseases in dogs and cats, as well as pet animal diseases.

Basically divided into 4 sections:

Male animal reproduction, infertility treatment of males, traditional and computer

assisted semen analyses. Assisted reproduction and reproductive biotechnology

including oestrous synchronization, artificial insemination, superovulation and embryo

transfer, cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, in vitro fertilization, in vitro

embryo culture, etc.

Determination of hormones and some mycotoxins by ELISA, development of rapid on

farm immunoassays.

Embryonic mortality, reproductive ultrasonography in cattle, calcium-metabolism in

the peripartal period and uterine involution in cattle, respiration physiology of the

new-born calf.

Endocrinology of reproduction, ovarian activity and reproductive disorders in

domestic animals, pancreatic, adrenocortical and thyroid malfunctions.

Veterinary botany


The study of poisonous plants mainly of their active principles is a classic part of our research

activity. Among the investigated materials were haemolytic saponins, phytoestrogens, some

minerals (Zn, Pb, Sr) and other non-minerals elements (Se) as well as some alkaloids (from

Lupinus species) or inorganic ions (NO3). Some mycological questions belong to the second

main aspect of our investigations, such as the biotransformation of plant lignocelluloses, the

poisonous mineral elements of the higher fungi, etc.

heterocycles, alkaloids and other natural products. Some works are carried out in contract

research with the pharmaceutical industry in order to synthesize biologically active new

Development of laboratory methods for haemostasis parameters. Evaluation of blood groups in

Research activity of the department is focused on pathogenic agents belonging to several

bacterium genera (Actinobacillus, Avibacterium, Campylobacter, Erysipelothrix, Francisella,

Haemophilus, Histophilus, Mannheimia, Paenibacillus, Pasteurella, Rhodococcus), virus

families (Adenoviridae, Arteriviridae, Bornaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Circoviridae,

Dicistroviridae, Coronaviridae, Flaviviridae, Herpesviridae, Hepeviridae, Paramyxoviridae,

Parvoviridae, Reoviridae and Retroviridae) together with the diseases they cause in farm,

wild living and pet animals with special regards to zoonotic agents. Research on the immune

reactions of animals help the understanding of pathogenicity, prevention and the host-parasite

relationship, development of new vaccines promote prevention and control of infectious

diseases.

Veterinary Pathology, Fish Hygiene and Fish Diseases


The research activities cover a broad spectrum of diseases, pathogens and host species,

including viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases of poultry, domestic and wild animals, reptiles,

fishes and honey bees, as well as different non infectious diseases and neoplastic changes of

the mentioned species. Members of the staff besides having a strong expertise on molecular

investigation techniques (i.e. polymerase chain reaction, primer design, phylogenetic

investigations of different pathogens, epizootiological investigations) are skilled in light and

electron microscopy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridisation, virus

propagation etc.

Veterinary pharmacology, Veterinary toxicology


The research program is mainly concerned with the applied veterinary pharmacology and

toxicology and it includes the following areas- Molecular biology, molecular aspects of

pharmacology

- Alternative tools to replace antibiotics, research with pre – and probiotic agents

- Pharmacokinetic and drug metabolism investigations in vivo and in vitro involving

primarily isolated cell cultures

- Target animal safety and efficacy of new drug formulations

- Acute and subacute toxicological studies of chemicals in laboratory animals.

- Some basic aspects of the discipline are also part of the research program, such as

emergence and spread of bacterial resistance.

Incorporation of students into the research forms an integral part of the teaching policy of

the department. This aim is realized partly through the organization of diploma work.

Veterinary physiology, Veterinary biochemistry


The main fields include the following: Neuroendocrinological and neuromorphological

investigation of hypothalamic energy metabolism. Regulatory processes in the handling of

thyroid hormones by non-thyroidal tissues; interrelationships of thyroid hormones with other

endocrine and immune signaling systems; investigation of the concentration of sexual steroids

in birds; immunoendocrinological interactions, particularly focused on the immunomodulatory

effect of prolactin; cellular mechanism of immunoglobulin transport; molecular biology and

amyloid research, Maintenance of chicken, swine and rat hepatocytes in primary culture,

immunohistochemical characterization of the cultured cells. Epigenetic and receptor mediated

actions of short chain fatty acid, butyrate both in vitro in hepatocyte culture and in vivo in the

intestine, liver, muscle and adipose tissue. Effect of butyrate as a signal molecule on the

carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and on the xenobiotic-metabolizing, phase I detoxification

enzymes cytochromes P450.

In its scientific research, the department cooperates with research groups from other nations

(USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Austria) and participates in different national and

international programs which are set up usually by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences or the

European Community.
