let us do our duty well
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to share with you Depaul USA’s 2014 Annual Report. Depaul USA is in the business of change. Our vision is a world where everyone has a place to call home and a stake in his or her community. In 2014, we moved closer to achieving this vision by launching new programs to end homelessness and continuing the excellent work of prior years.
In Philadelphia, Depaul USA started that city’s first medical respite. Now, homeless men who are discharged from hospital have a place—other than the street- where they can recover. In New Orleans, our new rapid rehousing project took 15 men and women living on the streets and in shelters and found them new homes across the city. We visit these men and women regularly and connect them with needed services so that they stay housed and secure.
In the statistical section of this report you will see the impact we are having. In just one year in New Orleans, 56 people achieved housing stability. In Macon, 179 volunteers helped serve over 4000 meals, and in Philadelphia three quarters of participants found gainful employment and two-thirds of them moved into their own home. In St. Louis, nearly 80 disabled, formerly homeless individuals received over 3000 counseling sessions that provide them the supportive services they need to thrive.
Our programs work. They respond to immediate crisis and encourage personal growth and healing while improving self-sufficiency skills. We listen to our participants when they describe what they need to find their way back to hope. We could not achieve these results without our team of dedicated and talented staff, our courageous Board of Directors, and our faith-filled and generous donors. You have my deepest thanks.
An annual report is by design a look back at what was. At Depaul USA we are always looking forward—to the next challenge, the next project, the next solution. In 2015, we will be working hard to extend our services to Little Rock and Chicago, launch new social enterprises, and open St. Raymond’s in Philadelphia, our first on-site permanent housing development. I already look forward to looking back on 2015.
With deepest gratitude,
Charles W. Levesque

client stories
D A R Y L“Last Wednesday, I moved into my own place. I still can’t believe it. It’s different than what I’m used to. It’s quiet. It’s strange since I’ve got to get used to being alone after all of those years in shelters and programs. You know, I’ve been out on the streets for the last 15 years. Getting into trouble and doing odd jobs. I haven’t had a steady job since 2000. And I didn’t think I would ever have a place to call my own again.
My case manager, Michelle, she helped me a lot. She helped me stay on track when I would get distracted. Lynn in the Job Shop, she helped me get a resume together and helped me find work.
I’ve been with [Immaculate Cleaning Services] since June 2014 and I really like it. I’ve learned a lot and I like the people I work with. Lynn also helped me get a second job at Awbury Arboretum. I like that job, too, because I get to help keep their buildings clean and I work independently.
Working helps me feel competent. My plan, now that I have my own place, is to stay focused and keep working. I know I can always come back to Depaul House to visit since I live in the neighborhood. I’m going to help out here since they’ve helped me so much.”
S A D I E“At first I was hesitant about asking [for help], because I had such bad experiences with other non-profit agencies, but I decided to try Depaul. And the staff, social workers, et cetera cared about my situation. They gave me the necessary information I needed to relocate and always asked me how things were. God sent me to Depaul.”

how we end homelessness
Depaul USA uses innovative social enterprise to further support our programs. Immaculate Cleaning Service and Wear, thrift with a twist, are for-profit subsidiaries of Depaul USA. These businesses integrate local communities to help meet the needs of their neighbors facing homelessness. No one wants to “live” in a shelter. Some people just need a little extra help, and we provide them the needed resources during times of crisis, helping them avoid a homeless shelter or quickly move on from one. Rapid-rehousing and housing-first models are the known best practices in our field—we use them and aim to grow and offer more of these programs in 2015.
The best way to move someone out of homelessness is simple: help them find a home they can afford. In our supportive housing programs, residents are taken to medical appointments, encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle, and have us on their side as they return to a life of self-reliance in the community. Our “Vincentian” philosophy of care makes clients our focal point. We ask, listen, and help, working and walking with clients as they take steps toward a better future. Skilled clinicians provide structure and support for individuals who need guidance through a crisis or assistance working through a complex set of barriers to stable housing.
rooted in valuesDepaul USA is based on the work and values of Saint Vincent de Paul, the 17th century French priest who knew, “there is great charity in the world, it’s just poorly organized”.
We organize and focus the efforts of a diverse network including expert staff, devoted community partners, passionate volunteers, and generous donors.
We celebrate the potential of people and put our words into actions. We are committed to innovation and to finding new ways to tackle the problems we encounter. We are taking a wider role in civil society : working in partnership with government, local authorities, the private sector, churches, and voluntary agencies to achieve the best possible outcomes for our ser-vice users. Homelessness has no place.
the road homeThe causes and solutions for individuals facing homelessness are unique. While our services vary based on the general needs of each community, our staff provide the crucial services each person needs to move on from homelessness.
Depaul USA houses and provides case management services thataim to stabilize and transfer clients to permanent, support-ive housing. In addition to the St. Louis and New Orleans program, Depaul USA placed 165 individuals into stable housing.
depaul international and the depaul charitiesDepaul International is the parent organization of charities that operate in the UK, Ireland, FranceSlovakia, Ukraine, and the USA. Together we support homeless and marginalized people around the world, managing more than 80 projects internationally. We provide shelter, food, medical care and a place of safety for nearly 13,000 individuals each year.

PHILADELPHIA
Philadelphia began a medical respite program in 2014, to give homeless hospital patients a place to recover. Depaul USA served 21 patients that area hospitals referred, and 78% exited the program to more stable housing. Once the immediate needs of a housing crisis are met—like food and medical care—our staff provide more complex social work. Depaul House, our transitional housing program provides food (28,000 meals) and beds (9,500 bed-nights), but the focus are jobs and stable onward housing.
ST. LOUIS
The St. Louis program provides permanent, supported housing for 75 individuals who have cognitive disabilities. In 2014, we provided 26,700 bed-nights. Staff support clients to obtain or increase monthly benefits or income—92% of clients did so. All clients decreased inappropriate use of the ER; and 92% clients have decreased encounters with the criminal justice system.
MACONA day/resource center like Daybreak in Macon, GA offers food, hygiene services, medical care, and social work. With the help of 179 volunteers, we served 1,600 clients. The medical clinic had 750 appointments. And, 47 clients achieved greater housing stability. Due to the transient nature of the population in Macon, we meet nearly 300 new clients every quarter.
NEW ORLEANSOur New Orleans program works within a day center, providing the transportation piece. In 2014, our van shuttled 347 clients to appointments and referred services. More than 200 individuals received medications, and 86 individuals received glasses. In 2014, Depaul USA also started a rapid re-housing program in New Orleans, taking 16 chronically homeless individuals off the streets and helping them into our program that supports them through home visits.
