NOTES: Probability with Dependent Events

Remember that Independent Events have no influence on one another. Dependent Events do have influence or affect the other events.

Independent Events : Tossing Coin, Rolling Die, Spinning Spinner, events with replacement, the sample space remains the same

Dependent Events: Events without replacement, the sample space will change. ie picking a card and keeping it before picking

another one that would affect your 2nd pick

P(A and B) = P(A) • P(B given that A has happened)

A card is pulled from a pile that consists of 5 Black, 6 Purple, 8 Yellow, and 1 Green, then without replacing the card another one is pulled. Determine the following probabilities.

1) P(Yellow then Blue) =

2) P(Purple then Purple) =

3) P(Green then Blue) =

and 2 – R’s. If 3 tiles need to be drawn, what is the probability that a Q is

The letter tiles left in a Scrabble game bag are 4 – N’s, 5 – E’s, 1 – Q, 3 – T’s,

drawn first, then a T, then lastly an R?
