Benefit of Oracle VM
• Server virtualization technology– Increase server consolidation– Improve server utilization– Maximize server efficiency– Lower the cost of infrastructure and operations– Reduce power and space requirements
• Can be deployed on industry standard x86 servers– Support Windows, Linux, and Oracle Solaris as guest OS– Support both Oracle and non-Oracle applications inside guest OS
• Industry standard x86 commodity servers become more powerful– More powerful CPU processors with higher processor core counts– Higher physical memory capacity– Under-utilized servers as a result– OVM increases server utilization and improve efficiency
• OVM template to speed up deployment process

Oracle VM Architecture
• Three components:– Oracle VM manager– Oracle VM server– Oracle VM agent
• Two types of virtual machines:– Hardware virtualized– Paravirtualized

Deployment Outline
• Prepare OVM environment– Install OVM on OVS server– Create virtual machines
› Allocate CPU cores, physical memory, and virtual disk for OS image– Install OS in virtual machine– OBIEE 11g supported system configurations
› System Requirements and Supported Platforms for OBIEE 11gR1– Prepare OS for prerequisites
› Oracle Fusion Middleware System Requirements and Specification 11g Release 1– Create OS account and filesystem for OBIEE installation
• Create schemas required by OBIEE using Repository Creation Utility– RCU runs on 32 bit Linux or 32 bit Windows– RCU connects locally or remotely to a certified database
• Run installer to install OBIEE 11g on primary node
• Scale out Oracle Business Intelligence system to additional nodes– Configure shared files and directories for BI repository, BI presentation catalog,
global cache, and BI scheduler scripts– Run installer on new hosts– Scale out OBIEE components on new hosts– Configure HTTP server with load balancer
19

Creating OBIEE Schemas using RCU
• Ignore the following warning when running RCU:The database you are connecting is with non-AL32UTF8 character set. Oracle
strongly recommends using AL32UTF8 as the database character set.
• RCU creates Metadata Services (MDS) and Business Intelligence Platform (BIPLATFORM) schemas in the database– Run RCU before installing each BI system– In a clustered OBIEE configuration, only run RCU once before installing
OBIEE on primary node
• Must use a database account with SYSDBA privilege (eg, as user SYS) when running RCU
• Oracle recommends selecting the “Use same password for all schemas” option and provide a single password for both MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas to share– Otherwise issues might occur with OBIEE installation

Setting Up Shared Files and Directories
• Oracle BI repository– Create repository publishing directory on shared storage– Designate shared location and upload repository file using Fusion Middleware
Control› Repository file is copied to both shared location and to the local repository directory.
Do not delete the local repository copies.
39
Global Solutions Engineering
Setting Up Shared Files and Directories
• Oracle BI presentation catalog– Create presentation catalog directory on shared storage– Copy presentation catalog to shared location using OS commands– Designate shared location using Fusion Middleware Control
40
Global Solutions Engineering
Setting Up Shared Files and Directories
• Global cache– Create global cache directory on shared storage– Set Global cache path and Global cache size using Fusion Middleware
Control
41
Global Solutions Engineering
Setting Up Shared Files and Directories
• Scheduler scripts– Create scheduler scripts directory on shared storage– Copy scheduler scripts to shared location using OS commands– Update the SchedulerScriptPath and DefaultScriptPath elements of the
Oracle BI Scheduler instanceconfig.xml file

Oracle VM Best Practices
46
Global Solutions Engineering
OVS Repository
• Oracle VM uses Oracle VM Server (OVS) repositories to store resources such as virtual machines, templates, ISO images, and shared virtual disks.
• OVS repositories should be created using the following best practice recommendations:
1. Setup O2CB cluster service2. Create a partition on your shared disk3. Create an OCFS2 file system on your shared partition4. Create an OVS repository using your shared partition5. Set the OVS repository as your cluster root using the UUID6. Log into the OVM Manager to initialize your OVS repository
47

Creating Server Pools & VMs
• Creation of virtual machines is the most elemental function you will use within your Oracle VM Manager.
• Oracle VM Manager is web-based management console used to simplify the usage of Oracle VM’s many features such as creating VMs, cloning, and live migration.

OVS Repository
• When a utility server is registered to your OVS repository via the Oracle VM Manager, resource-related sub-directories are created within your /OVS repository.

Oracle VM Templates
• What is an Oracle VM Template?– A template is a snapshot of a preconfigured virtual machine.
• What can it do?– Allows users to install a Oracle VM template to eliminate the
install/configuration of the OS or Oracle applications– Implements dynamic boot-time configuration for the OS &
Oracle software.
• Why use Oracle VM Templates?– Easy to install– Allows users to standardize on a VM image to ensure no discrepancies.– Simplifies patch updates– Ensures an optimal working environment
50

Creating Oracle VM Templates• How do I create an Oracle VM Template?
– There are two options when creating Oracle VM templates:› Using the ‘Save As Template’ function within the OVM Manager› Using Oracle’s Template Builder
51
Save as Template Template Builder
Advantages Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages
Easy to use Doesn’t use JeOS by default
Uses JeOS by default, thus reducing the template footprint significantly.
Requires Installation & customization of ‘OVM Template Builder’ template
No installation required
Lacks the pre-built oraclevm-template script
Enhances security and reliability of your VM template.
Requires management of resources in order to create your Oracle VM template.
More customization control of your VM template by embedding custom scripts into the template.
Thank you
