Day 1 (D): Canberra to Hay: Friday 27 April 2018 Welcome to our 6 Day Tour to the Riverland region of South Australia. We will spend 3 nights at the Barmera Country Club Motor Inn so that we can enjoy some local touring, meet some local characters, and sample some local produce. National Trust member, Dr Peter Dowling, historical archaeologist, will accompany the tour to give on-site and on-coach talks and Dianne Dowling will assist the group. So once we have completed our passenger pick up service and the coach is loaded we are ready to go. Our destination today is Hay which, like Barmera, is a river town – located on the Murrumbidgee River. We make several stops during the day including a lunch stop before our late afternoon arrival.

Cobb Inlander Motel, Hay 02 69931901 Day 2 (BLD): Hay to Barmera: Saturday 28 April 2018 After breakfast we take the opportunity for a brief tour of Hay before crossing the Hay Plain on our way to Mildura. We stop at Euston for a Club Lunch – it’s a great spot overlooking the Murray River – before continuing to Mildura and then west along the Sturt Highway towards the South Australian Border. Its 140ks from Mildura to Renmark - just inside the border - and just a little closer is the tiny village of Paringa (Paringa is from an Aboriginal word meaning "big bend in the river"). Navigating the Murray River wouldn’t be possible without the series of locks and weirs dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. Fourteen locks are still in use today. Lock 5, just downstream from Renmark, is a great example of one of these locks. We stop briefly for a look and to enjoy some fantastic views of the river. We then cross the Paringa Suspension Bridge which was opened in 1927 and drive into Renmark. We park at the Renmark Paringa Visitors Centre and visit Paddle Steamer Industry, which is moored here. Commissioned in 1911, the Industry once worked for South Australian Water keeping the Murray River open to traffic. From here we continue west leaving the highway briefly just before Berri to visit an aboriginal site adjacent to the river near Lyrup. From here we travel onto Barmera – our base for the next 3 nights. Our accommodation, surrounded by the Barmera Golf Club, is all ground floor with walk in showers. Dinner will be in the motel restaurant each night.

Barmera Country Club Motor Inn 08 85882888 Day 3 (BD): Exploring the Riverland: Sunday 29 April 2018 Barmera is a popular holiday resort town situated on the shores of Lake Bonney. This morning we will see the monument dedicated to Sir Donald Campbell who attempted to break the Australian water speed record on Lake Bonney in the 1960’s. We also call at the Country Music Hall of Fame before the short drive to Berri. Here we have arranged to join “Fay” – a 50 seat flat cruising boat for a two hour river cruise on this wide section of the river. Back in Berri we have some free time to purchase lunch (the Berri Hotel is a good option) before heading to Renmark to visit Olivewood. This 1880s wooden-floored log cabin house was originally designed for the Chaffey brothers who established the pioneering irrigation and fruit growing area of Renmark. The property remains a working orangery and the orchard is fully operational, including its famous olive trees. The original olive oil processing shed behind the log cabin now houses some of the National Trust collection of artefacts and photographs. Nearby there is also a packing shed constructed in American style c1890 with a large overhead loft. It houses a citrus and dried fruit packing plant and associated items. From here we return to Barmera and the motel to freshen up for dinner.

Barmera Country Club Motor Inn 08 85882888 Day 4 (BLD) The Historic Riverland: Monday 30 April 2018 Our first stop today is Loveday, located south of Barmera and near the Murray River. Loveday was known for its Internment Camp during World War II. The camp was established in 1941 and was one of the largest in Australia, covering approximately 180 hectares. The site was selected because of its rail and road connections, its irrigated fields and because both electricity and telephone communications were available. The camp was closed in December 1946. The historic Loveday Internment Camp General Headquarters Site in Thiele Road and Brick Boiler Stack, Loveday Irrigation Scheme Pumping Station in Morris Street are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. From here we continue onto Cobdolga and visit the Irrigation and Steam Museum which is full of interesting exhibits, engines and pumps, tractors and machinery from a past era. A special feature at the museum is the WORLD'S only Humphrey Pump in working order, (although following an OH&S incident, the pump is currently not being operated). The Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum also has a substantial display devoted to the Loveday internment camp, maintained by the National Trust. From here our drive takes us over the Napper Bridge which crosses Chambers Creek (the link from the Murray River to Lake Bonney). We make a stop at the site of the Nappers Accommodation House, an important stopping place on the overland stock route, built in 1863 by William Napper as an accommodation hotel. William Napper

planted vines, fruit trees and ornamental and shade trees in the grounds. The 19th Century hotel building is now in ruins. From here we continue onto the historic Overland Corner Hotel - a popular rest spot last century for drovers moving stock between NSW and South Australia. The hotel was built from sandstone cut from a nearby quarry and in the 1870's it was not unusual for as many as 30,000 sheep and several mobs of cattle to be camped here overnight. We enjoy lunch here before continuing onto visit the award winning Banrock Station near Kingston on Murray. Banrock Station lies at the junction of the Banrock Creek and the Murray River. The property was purchased by BRL Hardy in 1994. The 1650 hectare property has just 250 hectares devoted to premium grape varieties such as Semillon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The remaining land, including 12.5 kilometres of river frontage adjacent to the Banrock Lagoon and wetlands, is being returned to its native state. We have arranged afternoon tea here overlooking the wetlands. After a great day we head back to Barmera and the motel for dinner.

Barmera Country Club Motor Inn 08 85882888 Day 5 (BLD): Barmera to Echuca/Moama: Tuesday 01 May 2018 We farewell our hosts at Barmera this morning and begin the drive home. We travel south via Pyap, with a stop to view Daisy Bates last campsite, to another of the other major riverland towns, Loxton. Loxton was first settled by people of (predominantly) German origin, who were escaping religious persecution and this proud German heritage is still evident today. From here we continue south to Pinnaroo and then across the border to Ouyen where we stop for lunch at a classic country pub – the Victoria Hotel. We then re connect with the Murray River just west of Swan Hill and follow the Murray Valley Highway through Kerang and onto Echuca for our final night on tour. On arrival we check in and enjoy dinner before heading home tomorrow.

Comfort Inn Echuca Moama 0354823311 Day 6 (B): Moama to Canberra: Wednesday 02 May 2018 We begin the trip home this morning, travelling via the Rutherglen Wine Region and then onto Albury. After lunch (own expense) we head home via the Hume Highway arriving back into Canberra late afternoon to complete a sensational 6 day tour.
