Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathalie Bodley End of whole-school temperature testing Starting in week 3, the school has been monitoring all staff and studentstemperature with a thermal camera. This will cease today. This measure was used to ensure confidence during this COVID period. Thank you to all staff and students involved. We are still making sure that students are being mindful of practising good hygiene behaviour. We will also temperature test individual students if they present to us as sick’. Please keep your child home if they have any cold symptoms. Year 10 Minimum Standards – next week All Year 10 students are now required to demonstrate that they have achieved a minimum standard in numeracy and literacy in order to be eligible to receive their HSC certificate. The standard is set at level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Students have six opportunities each year, starting in Year 10, to demonstrate they have reached Level 3. Next week, students will sit the online HSC Minimum Standards Reading, Writing and Numeracy tests. A Lockdown Browserhas been posted on every students English Google Classroom with instructions to download and install on their laptops. This is required by NESA in order to sit the tests. On Thursday, 18 students from years 7 - 10 and their mentors participated in the first mentoring session where they met their match and discussed what they want to get from being involved in this 20-hour program. Students did a pre-evaluation questionnaire that dealt with how they felt about friendships and identified where students are at right now’. Mentors commented on the enthusiasm and great connection with students who engaged with them right from the start of the morning. Research shows that quality mentoring greatly increases a young person s con- fidence and self-respect. Raise Mentoring is now in its 6th year at St Ives High School and is empowering our stu- dents to be resilient and value their relationships and connections to each other. Term 2 Week 9 26 June 2020

Year 12 July Holiday program Earlier this week, Year 12 parents and students were emailed the Trial Examination timetable and July School Holi-day classes. Today, a hyper-linked, updated July school holiday program was emailed for students to register their attendance to the holiday classes. It is important for students to register their attendance as this will help the teach-ers who are giving up their time to support year 12 for the Trial examination commencing in week 3 of term 3. “Though she be but little, she is fierce…Lord, what fools these mortals be” This week in English, Year 7 took on the role of a character from the dramatic text they had been studying in class and performed a monologue as that character. Here are some photos of 7T and 7V dressed as the characters of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Don’t we all just love Shakespeare!

Year 10 Textiles Technology Quilt Project This was the first time that the Year 10 Textiles class engaged in the craft of quilt making. Everyone began with a pattern and sewed strips together rather than individual squares, apparently, that is easier (you can tell I don ’t have a clue!). The whole process took about 6-7 weeks with a break during COVID. The students found the process a lot more challenging than first thought as much patience and persistence was needed. It was a rewarding experience to finish the task and create such lovely pieces. I’m sure this may lead to some budding quilters in the future. The class’ next project is on the theme of a masquerade ball and also ‘upcycling’, where they use recycled items to cre-ate another reusable product.

Touch Footy for all! What a great example of inclusivity. Years 7 – 12 playing touch football at lunchtime. Year 11 VET sports coaching is studying “The 7 Pillars of Inclusion” which include: 1. Access – how to get there and get in; 2. Attitude – how will-ing are you to make it happen; 3. Choice – what can you do? 4. Partnership – who will you work with? 5. Communication – who will you tell? 6. Policy - how are people responsi-ble? 7. Opportunities – what do you want to do? It was wonderful to see our senior students making these choices to include year 7 – 12 students in their inclusive game. All students involved should be congratulated on their great spirit, sportsmanship and skills that were on display.

Best Wishes Nathalie Bodley Deputy Principal

YEAR 9 FINANCIAL LITERACY

The year 9 students are coming towards the end of their Financial course. The students have had to apply for a tax file number, “buy” some shares and report on their results and write a report on the housing market and borrowing options. They then had to apply for a job as an officer junior, writing a resume and a covering letter and placing all of this in a portfolio with their work for the semester. Today was the second day of interviews for the “job”. Majority of candidates were successful and I am sure that this has been great practice for the real world. They have been a fantastic group, who were very excited to discover the financial world, even though the share market experience was more horrific than anticipated. I was amazed at how many out of school activities our students are involved in.

ST IVES STUDENTS – TINY OR TOWERING?

We were sitting in class one day learning about data col-lection. How to do it. What it all meant. Normal class-work. When Mr Williamson brought up a concept to fig-ure out the average height of a student at St Ives High. We decided to take 10% of each grade (split into gender) as part of a stratified sample and then calculate the mean of all of them.

Almost the entire class showed up on Thursday morning, mostly because we were bribed with muffins and orange juice. (Not that we were complaining). We spent the morning measuring staff and students, and finished up at around 8:45 and were content with the amount of data we had recorded.

Once we were in class again we started looking at the data. We realised we had a lot more measurements from the younger years than the older years and did not have enough from the older years to use the data the way we originally planned to. After brainstorming we decided on an idea that Mr Williamson put forward. We used the data we had collected and used a weighting to align the data with the stratified sample size.

So what was the end result? Well after all our brain-storming, hypothesising and planning we finally came to the conclusion. The average height of a student at St Ives High School (With Shoes On) is 170.77cm! (To 2 decimal places). The staff were only a little bit taller; their aver-age height was 175.48cm.

Lifeline has opened a pop-up book shop at 21 Hill St Roseville. We are unable to hold our very popular Annual book fair in July this year because of COVID-19 constraints and will instead be selling our books in Roseville for the next few months. The shop has a great range of cheaply priced pre-loved books including children's books in all age rang-es and will be regularly restocked. There are also many fiction and non-fiction books for adult readers. The shop will be open between 10am and 4pm from Tuesday to Saturday each week. All funds raised go to support the vital life-saving services provided by Lifeline. There is a fantastic range of books available at the Roseville shop. All books are in excel-lent condition, are individually cleaned by our volunteers and are attractively priced.
