Fun Run/ Cross Country
Please be sure to collect your sponsor money from the people who kindly sponsored you for the Fun Run/ Cross Country. The
last day to qualify for prizes is 6 June 2014. To date 33 students out of 610 have returned their money. These students have
made a super effort raising a total of $1323.10 between them which is an average of $40.09 per student. Both the MAC classes
are currently holding the trophy for highest average per student and ultimately the class with the highest average per student
will win the class party.
P&C News President: Mrs Nicole Collisson Thank you to all our helpers who assisted with the Mothers’ Day Stall. The profit was $800.00 and P&C have voted to use this

Walk Safely to School Day
Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to
walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport
and the Environment.
It will be held throughout Australia on Friday 23 May 2014
The objectives of WSTSD are:
To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe
pedestrian behaviour.
To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change
as children become adults.
To promote the use of Public Transport.
To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
To reduce the level of traffic congestion.
Would you like to win a $200.00 or $50.00

Preschool News Mr Kumar built this great cubby for our preschool. His friends
helped him deliver it one weekend and our children had a lovely
surprise when they arrived back at preschool after the
weekend. Thank you Mr Kumar!
Preschool had a great time at the Fun Run. Please remember to send your sponsorship money to the
office before 6 June 2014.
The Sleepover
In the holidays, Thomas and I went to our mum’s house and we had a sleepover. Then in the morning
we went to the park. We played in the sand and we built a sand castle. When
we got home we played on the swing set.

Clayton Crab
Hi. My name is Clayton and I’m a blue crab. My mum layed lots of eggs called
larvae and I hatched from one of those. I have 10 legs but the front pair are
really claws which I use for eating and protecting myself. I can grow new claws if I lose one. I love
eating plants, worms, fish and even snails. I breathe through gills just like fish and I use my
antennas for smelling. Crabs with blue claws are male and female crabs have red tips on their claws.
Crabs can’t walk forwards so we move sideways to get around. Having 10 legs isn’t always easy. By

The Zoo
My dad and his friend bought tickets and took us to the zoo in the
holidays. First we went to look at the pandas. One of them was eating.
Then we went to see the snow leopard. It was asleep. We saw the lions
and one lion was chasing something. When we
saw the tigers they were all eating. It was a
very interesting day and the zoo and we had
lots of fun.

KWHL is a strategy to help students gather information and think
through a research problem. The Jnr MAC have been using this to plan
their projects on Space.
K- What we already KNOW
Manahil Yr 1
The moon is made of rocks.
It takes 24 hours for the earth to spin once
The stars look small but they are big
The earth is smaller than the sun.
Henrietta Yr1
The side of the Earth near the sun is light and the other side is dark.
In space everything is floating in the air but on Earth everything is not in the air because of
gravity.
Abdul Yr 2
Our sun has 8 planets.
Jupiter has a red spot.
Pluto is now considered to be a dwarf planet.
Jupiter’s biggest moon is called Ganymede.
Aayarsh Yr 2
The sun will collapse in many years, turn into a red giant, suck in the inner planets and turn into
a white dwarf.
Venus experiences acid rain
75% of Venus is covered by lava, just as 75% of Earth is covered by water.
Stars are suns and have planets of their own.
The sun is 1000000 times bigger than the Earth
It takes 8 minutes for the suns light to reach Earth.
Halleys Comet will come back in 2070
Inside asteroids there is loads of metal.
What we WANT to know
Manahil Yr 1
How hot is the sun?
How do shooting stars move?
Why do the stars shine?
How big is space?
Henrietta Yr1
How far is Jupiter?
How did the planets get their names?
Where did the planets and stars come from?
Why is Mars red?
Abdul Yr 2
How big is Earth’s moon?
Why does the asteroid belt come between Mars and Jupiter?
What are Saturn’s moons called?
Where does the Earth get is water?
How was the Milky Way formed?
How did Saturn get its rings?
Aayarsh (Yr 2)
What happens to a white dwarf?
What was there before the universe began?
What are people made of?
Will we ever live on other planets?
HOW are we going to find out?
Books, computer science programs, iPads, watch a space show on TV, ask your dad or teacher, ask
someone who knows, encyclopaedias, internet research, museums, planetariums, write to a scientist
or astronomer (Class ideas)
What did I LEARN
This is where we answer the questions we have asked in ‘What we WANT to know’. We are doing
research in class, in library and in computers to find the answers to all of our questions and we will
record the information in our projects. LEARNING IS SO EXCITING! Junior MAC
5 Ways to a Healthy Lifestyle With good food habits and daily physical activity you will be well on your way to a healthy life. Easy to say, but sometimes not
so easy to do! Our busy lifestyles can be hard on our family’s health. Rushing to and from school and work can make it hard to
find time to be physically active. We can also slip into the habit of choosing unhealthy snacks and take-away foods or
spending our free time watching TV or in front of the computer. However, these choices can be dangerous for our health and
our children’s health – both now and in the long-term. That’s why it’s so important to stop, take stock and make a conscious
decision to follow a healthy lifestyle.
What can I do? There are five simple ways for your family to lead a healthy lifestyle and get back on track: 1. Get active each day Regular physical activity is important for the healthy growth, development and well-being of kids and teens.
They should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including vigorous activities that make them ‘huff and puff’.
Parents should be good role models and have a positive attitude to being active.
2. Choose water as a drink Water is the best way to quench your thirst – and it doesn’t come with the added sugar found in soft drinks, fruit juice
drinks and other sweetened drinks.
Reduced fat milk for children over two years of age is a nutritious drink and a great source of calcium.
Give kids and teens whole fruit to eat, rather than offering fruit juices which contain less fibre.
3. Eat more fruit and vegetables Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps kids and teens grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of
many chronic diseases.
Aim to eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day. (This varies for boys and girls at different ages.)
Have fresh fruit available as a convenient snack and try to include fruit and vegies in every meal.
4. Switch off the TV or computer and get active Sedentary or ‘still’ time spent watching TV, surfing online or playing computer games is linked to kids becoming overweight
or obese.
Kids and teens should spend no more than 2 hours a day on ‘small screen’ entertainment.
Plan a range of active indoor and outdoor games or activities for your children, as alternatives to watching TV or playing on
the computer.
5. Eat fewer snacks and select healthier alternatives Healthy snacks help kids and teens meet their daily nutritional needs.
Snacks based on fruit and vegetables, reduced fat dairy products and whole grains are the healthiest choices.
Avoid snacks that are high in sugar or saturated fats – such as chips, cakes and chocolate – which can cause children to put
on excess weight.
Kids Fact Sheets
The Healthy Kids website is centred around 5 key ways to a healthy lifestyle. There are Healthy Kids fact sheets designed
especially for children to read and are available on each of the 5 key messages. These fact sheets are:
Get Active Each Day
Choose Water as a Drink
Eat More Fruit and Vegies
Switch off the Screen and Get Active
Grab a Healthy Snack
The Healthy Kids website can be found at http://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/home
Too sick for school? As the cold weather hits, so do the winter bugs. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety's sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. School A to Z and the NSW Health have created an at-a-glance chart to help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school. Find it by typing this link into your web browser www.bit.ly/1hytn2E
Mental maths strategies We teach children a range of different strategies to add and subtract numbers. By showing them several methods for solving maths questions, we’re helping them to look for patterns. All this builds a good sense of “number” which means they understand the relationships between different numbers and why different ways to add and subtract work well. The goal is that your child will understand many ways to approach a maths problem and will be able to choose a way that makes the most sense to them. School A to Z has a lot of resources, including help sheets on mental maths strategies, here : www.bit.ly/JkiUsY
Does speaking another language at home confuse children? Are your children fortunate enough to be growing up in a home where two or more languages are spoken? Many parents worry that bilingualism can cause confusion and even delays in learning for their children, but according the Raising Children Network, that’s not the case at all. A good knowledge of your native language can actually help your child with learning English. Bilingual children who are read books and spoken to in their in their native language find it easier to learn to read and write in English when they get to school. More information is at www.bit.ly/1m0agnk
If your child is absent you must send a note to the teacher the next school day!
If your child is going on an extended holiday you must apply for an exemption from school.
Please ask for the form at the school office. Parents planning to travel are advised of the school terms for the next few years, this may make assist in choosing dates for your family holiday.
