March 2016

Bob and Charlotte Cryan arecontinuing their adventures inand around Nashville. This monththey report on events theyattended. It really sounds likethey are having good time.

We have reports on recent eventsthis month. Deb Isley reports onthe Ladies event that was wellattended. It sound like there willbe more like this in the future. Wealso have a report by Kim Harrison the chili cookoff and euchreparty held at the Schoen’s. I didnot do very well in the euchretournament but did enjoy thegreat chilis offered.

We have several events comingup in the next few months. InApril, a new event for us, is onApril 16 with a trip to Q-Zar LaserTag followed by dinner atShorty’s BBQ. May 7 will beKentucky Derby party at GermainPorsche in Ann Arbor. Later inMay on the 22nd will be ourannual brunch at Mon Ami in PortClinton.

It seems like I wasjust writing lastmonth'sPresident's articleand we are alreadymidway throughMarch. Prettysoon, if notalready, people arestarting to pull off

the car covers, pumping up the tiresand making sure the fluids arechanged in our toys that we will soonbe getting out.

Last month Jim & Diane Schoenhosted a great time at their housewith a combination chili cook off &rotating euchre tournament.Everyone had a fantastic time.Unfortunately, I & my partnersdidn't get the cards that night! Italways amazes me in a great way howour small region gets people to drive40-50 miles for a club event. It justgoes to show you the camaraderiethat our club engenders and thefriendships that arise out of it.

The ladies also got together at theToledo Botanical Garden to have aglass or two of wine and have funpainting under the tutelage of a localpainter. I hear everyone had afabulous time.

By the time you read this, we willhave had the Zone 4 President'smeeting the weekend of the 18th. Thisis an intense weekend that starts withthe area participants getting togetheron Friday night with their spouses

and having dinner downtown. OnSaturday, the venue brings the Zone4 Presidents together for an all daymeeting to discuss issues & eventsthat other regions are experiencingalong with how they deal with itemsthat come up along the way. OnSunday, the DE chairs along with theChief Instructor get together tohammer out invariable changes thatoccur within the DE schools as PCAevolves.

We have several events coming up inthe near term including a businessmeeting on April 14 at Vin Devers. All of our members are welcome andencouraged to attend these events. These meetings are what set the stagefor the club events along with anypressing items that we need todiscuss. On April 16, there is a gettogether in Sylvania at Q-Zar LaserTag along with dinner at Shorty'sRoadhouse afterwards. Please markyour calendars and check the websitefor additional details for upcomingevents.

Lastly, I will mention again that wehave the MVR-PCA DE event up andrunning on ClubRegistration.net. Wewant this to be a successful event thisyear & hope to see more memberssign up for this. If you haven't everparticipated in this type of controlledevent, you owe it yourself to try. Talkto anyone of the officers or boardmembers if you are interested or havequestions.

Take care & remember to keep theblink alive !!!

person to come up to us to say hello wasa man who lived in Sylvania for anumber of years but at that time did nothave a Porsche so was not a member ofMVR. Small world, huh? We talkedwith other members who urged us tocome to all of the local events and alsoto travel with them to other clubmeetings in adjoining regions.

The banquet was quite delightful withnearly 100 people in attendance. Foodwas excellent; very few speeches; areview of the coming events bothlocally and nearby; an excellentpresentation by Ray Shaffer, formerlywith Brumos Porsche and now Managerof the Classic and Delivery Center atPCNA Headquarters; and, a 30 itemraffle ticket give away. Can you believeso many gifts? Really good stuff too!One was a watch worth over $1000.00!Just about every couple won somethingincluding us. The Porsche 919 coffee

Charlotte and I have enjoyed a varietyof Porsche Club related events sincearriving here in Lebanon, Tennessee.Last fall, just after our latest grandsonwas born, we contacted the local clubPresident – Michael Moody – to tellhim we would be living with ourdaughter in Lebanon for almost fourmonths. Having previously researchedthe Nashville region we found thatMusik-Stadt PCA has a hugemembership and has a variety ofactivities every month well described intheir online newsletter.

While talking with Michael wediscovered our first example of southernhospitality. He immediately invited usto attend their January 30th Winterbanquet where he said a number of theirmembers including himself wouldremember the work we did on their carsat Traverse City. Such was certainly thecase at the banquet as we wereapplauded when introduced. The first

mug will always remind us of thesewonderful Porsche folks. But it is NOTABOUT THE CARS is it?

One of the coming events that Michaelalluded to was the Annual WinterfestConcours, sponsored by theChattanooga, Tennessee Region. Ofcourse, we were encouraged to go. So,we did.

Within days of registering to attend theConcours we were contacted by JerryThompson, a member of the localplanning committee. He told me thatthey were looking forward to having“The Doctor in the House!” I wasblown away when he told me to plan todo some work on several of the cars heknew would be there including his ownand wondered if I would order paint. Somuch fun to be included again. TheConcours, held at the VW Training andConference Center in Chattanooga onFebruary 19 and 20th, was a small onewith only 22 cars judged. But the freefood and camaraderie was special likealways. Cars were prepped on Fridaynight and early Saturday morning. Ipainted several cars just in time for thejudging which began at 9AM. Theafternoon driving tour was enjoyable aswe wound around the Chattanoogacountryside and explored historic placesarriving back at the hotel after severalhours. The evening banquet was held atthe local Porsche/Jaguar/Land Roverdealership. What a cool place withoutdoor adventure pictures and wild lifedecorations/trophies adorning everywall. Food was “German” in keepingwith the nature of the event – nicelycatered and well “supported” with avariety of libations. AND, shockingly,we won the first door prize!! We were

recognized as from Toledo MVR. Ireally think that was rigged, but thebeautiful golf type umbrella will beanother reminder of the “southernhospitality.”

One more excursion took us toNashville for a show at the Grand OleOpry. Gosh, what a wonderful venue, great music by notables like JohnConley, Mike Snyder, Ricky Skaggs(Riders in the Sky) and Connie Smithand such history. During theintermission the man next to us got upto go get a drink. As he started to passin front of us he said, “Can I get eitherof you a drink? What would you like?”I was embarrassed to say yes, but heinsisted and took our order. Upon hisreturn I tried to give him money to atleast cover some of the cost. He refusedsaying that it was his pleasure. Whenwas the last time you had that happen toyou at a concert in Toledo?

We’ve been to the Musik-Stadtbreakfast meetings; will attend their“tech” session at the BrentwoodPorsche Dealership; and, will likely joinclub members for a winery drive tour toDahlonega, GA followed by going tothe Porsche Driving Experience atPCNA in Atlanta at the end of April.

All in all it has been a most special timein “the South.” We have so many newfriends here. So coming to see our newgrandson will be doubly fun! See Y’allin May!

The "Porsche Gals" broke away fromthe pack on Saturday, March 5th, for anafternoon of fun and socializing.Fourteen ladies met at the ToledoArtists’ Club at the Toledo BotanicalGardens. We brought our favorite

wines, beverages, appetizers, anddesserts to share. We had three guests,Kim’s mother-in-law, Susan Brown’sdaughter, and Ruth’s granddaughter, join us. We had selected theMarblehead Lighthouse for the painting.

A talented, local artist, Aaron S. Bivins, guided us through the intricacies ofwhich watercolor to apply first and howto apply it. We experimented withblending paint colors on the palette andthen painting them on the picture. I wassure I would need to use the gardenhose I spotted outside the clubhouse towash off the paint and start over. But,with Aaron’s skillful guidance and aswish of his paintbrush in a few spots, Ididn’t need to worry. Aaron was helpfulwith guiding all of us and said not toworry the picture will be great! A fewhours later, he “displayed” several ofour pictures in a frame for all to see andeach one received many ohhs and ahhs.We each went home with our prizedwatercolor painting! We talked abouthow much fun this event was and thatwe need to have another ladies event!

Great evening at the Schoen’s onFebruary 20! The chili cook-off hadeight participants who out didthemselves with tasty entries and asalways, there were plenty of side dishesand desserts. The large kitchen alongwith additional side tables was full ofwonderful food such as JeanneKrauser’s cornbread salad and RuthGulliford’s homemade bread. The socialcommittee numbered the bowls so itwas easier to keep track of yourfavorites once you got back to yourtable and ballot. After official voteswere counted, three winners emerged:

Spicy: Mille WoodruffBeany: Laura ValentinePeople’s Choice: Jim Schoen

The group moved, after dinner, to thenewly finished basement – howbeautiful! Six tables were ready to gofor the Euchre Tournament. Wereviewed basic rules so everyone startedout with common expectations. ThenDiane distributed individual scorecards. Each table went through eight deals, and then two non-winners moved to thenext table. One winner at each tableshifted one chair so everyone got newpartners. Sharon Gargasz and TomWoodruff individually got through fourgames before they had to move to newtables. Tom Isley told me that heunfortunately moved through all sixtables. Sorry Tom, no winning games –better luck next time! Diane presented

Burned Out 968 Center Brake Light Bulb

Question: I have a burned out bulb in the center brake light fixture of my 1992 968.Please advise how to get access for the replacement. The trunk lid has a noiseabsorbing lining. I am afraid I'll damage this lining attempting to remove it. Also,I'd like to replace all of the 24 year old incandescent bulbs with LEDs, but I haven'tbeen able to find an LED replacement bulb for the type used in the fixture.

Answer: Submitted by George Beuselin. The third brake light assembly is attachedto the trunk lid with phillips head screws hidden under the fabric cover. If you arecareful, you can remove the screws without damage to the fabric. With a little bit ofresearch, I was able to find that the type of Halogen bulb that is stock for the thirdbrake light is a T3, 12 volt bulb. I found some LED bulbs in the T3 format, 12 voltat Amazon. They might work, but your guess is as good as mine... http://www.amazon.com/Rayhoo-Equivalent-Halogen-Replacement-Non-dimmable...

911 Low Beams and Engine Cover Release Inoperative

Question: Out of the blue, I found that the low beam headlights on my 2002 911Carrera 4 Cabriolet would not turn on. I inspected the bulbs carefully and they lookfine. I checked all related fuses and found them all in good order AND it fixed theheadlight problem (for one day.) Now I notice that in addition to my low beamheadlights not working, the switch that activates the engine cover release, is also notworking.I checked every fuse in the fuse box to be safe. Every one of them are fine. Anysuggestions on what to try next?

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. Electric gremlins like the ones you're chasingcan be frustrating. First, let me tell you that the two systems aren't related, so you'llhave to go after them one by one. The low beam headlight circuit working one daythen not the next, then back to darkness prompts me to suspect the headlight switchinstead of a fuse. The switch is relatively complex and they've been known to giveus trouble in the past so you might check there. Try exercising the switch by

working it through all of the possible positions (use your Owner's Manual for tips,I'll bet you didn't know there was a 2-step 'pull' position) and see if that helps getthings going again, if even temporarily. For the engine cover release, it's a relatively simple electrical system but don'tdisregard the possibility of a mechanical issue. As our cars age the struts start tolose their charge and the deck lids get sticky. It could very well be that the system istrying to activate but simply can't work against all the mechanical factors. Have apartner alternatively push down and pull up on the deck lid while you give theswitch a try and listen for the actuator, otherwise you'll have to go back to basicelectrical diagnostics (power, ground, continuity, etc).

CD Stuck in 2006 911 PCM

Question: A CD is stuck in the player of my 2006 911 and it won't eject. I havetried some tricks I found on You Tube and none worked. Will I need to take my carto the dealership and will they have to rip out the dash?

Answer: Submitted by Dustin Aydt. Usually when CDs get stuck inside these PCMunits there is not much you can do to extract the CD short of disassembling the unititself. This is not something I recommend attempting yourself unless you haveexperience with this type of radio repair. When these vehicles were under factorywarranty we had to replace the PCM and send the faulty unit back to PCNA to havethe CD removed and then sent back to the dealership. Now that the factory warrantyhas expired, there are many radio repair facilities that can perform the same repairwithout requiring PCM replacement. You will however need to remove the PCM tohave the repairs completed. The good news regarding this is removing the PCMfrom the vehicle is minimally intrusive and only requires removing a few smallpieces of trim to access the mounting hardware. PCM removal and installation caneasily be completed within about 1 hour by anyone familiar with these cars.
