Denny Strauss gaveus a little preview of thenext Monterey/PebbleBeach presentation he willmake to the club early nextyear just to whet ourappetites. Be sure tothank Roland for letting ususe his very nice newfacility for this meeting thenext time you see him.

We closed out the trackseason with the FallShowdown at MAM. Theweather Saturday morningwas a little wet, but bynoon the rain had dried up

November second, and thenthe monthly breakfast at theHeartland Café on the 12th.We are still working on a funrun through the Loess Hillsof Iowa down to NebraskaCity for sometime inNovember, so stay tuned forthe details.

The calendar will be prettybare during the Holidayseason. We’ll still have themonthly breakfast meeting atthe Heartland Café inNovember and December, and we will start off the 2014with brunch New Years Dayat the Hilton Downtown. Then on Friday January 18thwe will have the annualHoliday Party at Oak HillsCountry Club. Twenty Great Plains Region PCA board members and general members met September 25th, 2013 at ManarinInvestments Community Room, 505 N. 210th Street, Elkhorn, NE., for the GPR annual meeting.

President: GPR President Tom Cooper called the meeting to order. The current GPR board was introduced and eventsponsors were acknowledged and thanked.

Treasurer: GPR Treasurer Bob Lynch presented the financial status of the club. The club started the year with acheckbook balance of $61,528 and had $62,892 on hand at the end of August. Bob took questions from the membersabout the amount of income received from member dues in 2013, which is about $4000. Bob stressed that the sponsorsare critical to keep the club healthy and thanked them.

President: GPR President Tom Cooper explained the proposed bylaw amendments. Proposed amendments were to addWebsite and Registrar as Board of Director positions, bringing total Board members to nine plus the immediate activePast-President; and added that national PCA members of all types must be approved by the Membership Chairperson orPresident with ratification by the Board of Directors. Language will also be added to include that the original By Lawswere adopted June 23, 1967 and amended on June 1, 1997 and September 25th, 2013. A motion to adopt the proposedamendments was made by Bob Lynch, motion was seconded by Roland Manarin. The amendments were approved on aunanimous vote by those present.

Social: GPR Social chair Brian Tessman provided a social update. Upcoming events for the rest of the year include theFall Showdown DE, Streak Fry, planned movie night to see “RUSH”, possible New Years Day brunch, and annualHoliday Party on January 18th. Also, the monthly breakfasts have been very successful and will continue. Brian tooksuggestions from members on the type of events members want. Suggestions included more “behind the scenes” typetours, social events with “no agenda” (similar to Out of the Corkscrew type events), and a fall Fun Run through the Loesshills. Brian also wants to plan more events that appeal to the women in the club. A suggestion was made for him to meetwith a few of the women in the club to come up with some ideas.

New/Old Business: GPR President Tom Cooper discussed the status of local tracks. We have our Annual Club Race andone DE scheduled for Motorsport Park Hastings next year. Almost every weekend is booked with an event at MPH in2014. The status of MAM is status quo with some question of what 2014 will bring for MAM. Tom noted that attendancefor our DEs in 2013 has been down from the past few years. The need for volunteers to help at the events was stressed.Particularly important is the need for a Club Race Chair and a Registrar. Both positions are needed for 2014.

Presentation: Denny Strauss gave an excellent presentation showing just a sampling of fantastic photographs from hisPebble Beach trips. A full-length presentation by Denny is hopefully in the cards for early 2014.

Drawing was made for door prizes, and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, Eric Elliott

...Fall Showdown Driver Education - Mid-America Motorplex

Just a man and his car (not just any car...it’s gotta be a Porsche) anda walkie talkie.Have you ever wondered what our outstanding pit crew does whilewe’re on the track have fun? Looks like Eric is taking a well deservedbreak! Now you know.

DE is all about Driver Education. We had anenthusiastic class at the Fall Showdown.Instructor John Krecek seems to be holdingan imaginary steering wheel. Most certainlyteaching the finer aspects of oversteer.

Driver Education events are also about sharing thoughts with fellow drivers. Visitorsfrom other Clubs and states are discussing track management with severalmembers of the Great Plains Region Porsche Club.

Oh the weather outside was frightful.... We can’t seem to get abreak this year with an entire weekend of good driving weather. Itwas cold and raining Saturday morning. Thankfully there wasshelter. Of course Sandy Steckman’s trailer was heated. BobLynch’s isn’t; hence the excess clothing needed for comfort.

A head in a wheel well. But this time it’s not Sandy Steckman.Kevin Schilling checking for damage before installing the wheeland tire. See his open letter to the membership on page 8.

If I invent a tire that never needs changing I’d be rich.Doug Avila complying with the ritual; tires and brakes. Dougfrequents our DE’s. Always good to see him. Maybe next yearhe has a Porsche. We welcome all vehicle types at our DE’s.

First of all, let me again thank yourregion's generous hospitality this pastweekend. I had a great time, the trackwas a blast to drive on, the weather forthe vast majority of the weekendcooperated nicely and I came home inone piece with a brand spanking newtire on my car!! Can’t beat that! Iwanted to describe, in detail, a bit ofmy experience to you this pastweekend.

"Even though the morning started outa little gray, wet and gloomy, by themiddle of the morning the rain hadstopped and thanks to the flat wideopen plains the (seemingly) everpresent wind dried the asphalt trackout quite nicely. Getting in a couple ofsessions in the rain on the wettrack early on Saturday provedbeneficial later when thingsdried out. It was under the wetconditions and the sparsenumber of drivers that I startedto find the proper line thru thetrack.

The third and fourth sessions onSaturday were a blast; dry track, warming weather and still notterribly many drivers to contendwith. It seemed in the fourthsession that I was starting toslowly but surely navigate thetrack quicker and quicker and with onelap to go in the session it felt like I hadfound a nice rhythm thru the turnsuntil turn 8. There I went too wide, rode the top of the left hand rumblestrip and went off the left side of it justas the rumble strip section ended andbringing my car back onto to the trackcaused my left front tire to vigorouslyimpact something sharp resulting in apunctured tire.

I was close enough to the exit of thetrack that I was able to limp back tothe paddock (initially thinking I haddone some damage to my frontsuspension. Glad I was wrong about

that!). There I saw the completely flattire. No amount of slimy gel was ableto patch the slice in the inner sidewallof the tire and being without a spare Iwas feeling a little SOL. Many of thedrivers at the event lent me advice andmoral support and contact info to localtire stores and dealers very veryhelpful! Unfortunately the places Icould get in touch with on a Saturdayafternoon either didn't have a tire typethat I needed or if they did have a tireor could quickly get a tire they weren'topen any later on that day and weren'topen on Sunday.

I was running out of options and mywife was adamant that she wasn'tgoing to drive the 6 hours one way to

Kevin changing the left front tire on his 911

bring me a spare no matter what Ipromised her in the way of newdrapes, new kitchen cabinets, newcarpeting...

And then about 5 PM Russ Rabelerstopped by and asked how things weregoing. I'm guessing he could tell notvery well. He offered to call his son-in-law Mitch Schneringer. Mitch is theGeneral Sales Manager at Porsche ofOmaha. Russ asked Mitch if thedealership had any used tires layingaround that I could get my hands on.Mitch said he would have to drive into

the dealership to see and would callback later. After hitching a ride back tomy hotel I get a call from Mitch. He haddriven into the dealership at around 6PM (well after they had closed for theday) he said they didn't have any usedtires but did have an exact match to thetire I punctured. Only problem was mybad tire and wheel were on my car atthe track and the good tire Mitch hadwas at the dealership. So in an amazingdisplay of customer service Mitchoffered to pick me up from my hotel, drive me to the track so I could removethe wheel and bad tire, bring me andthe wheel/tire back to the dealershipand get a service technician to come into work early Sunday morning to swapbad tire for good, and, oh by the way,

arrange for me to use a loaner carfor the remainder of Saturdayevening and Sunday morning.Amazing, I repeat, AMAZING.

Sunday at 9 in morning I meetAndy Hipwell the Service Managerand Bob Smisek the servicetechnician at the dealership. Thetires have been swapped. I pickthem up, head to the track, get thewheel on the car and get in 4sessions of driving Sunday beforeheading home to St. LouisMO.!!!!!!

Remarkable, amazing, extraordinaryare all words that describe thekindness, sacrifice and service Iexperienced last weekend in PacificJunction. From Russ to Mitch to Andy toBob and everyone at the DE, they allhelped save my weekend from being adisaster to something very memorableand rewarding! Cheers to them, andcheers to the Great Plains Region!

I know where I'm buying my nextPorsche!

Several enjoyable events in September including our last DE of the season. Once again the weather wasn’t ascooperative as we would like. But everyone still had an enjoyable time. This year the Schlott Steak Fry was held on theSaturday evening of the DE. Kelly and Abe are such gracious hosts - opening their home to the membership. Seems likea great idea as the social event was well attended. Some DE participants from Missouri attended the dinner. Great wayto make new friends. The food was outstanding. The friendship beyond description. Next time you see Kelly or Abe, pullthem aside and thank them for being so supportive of your club.

Porsche of Omaha held a Panamera Launch Party at the dealership. What a gorgeous vehicle. Mitch and his teamalways do it right. It was a fun evening. They will be sponsoring a Turbo Launch Party sometime in December.

President Cooper called for the required Annual Meeting. It was held at the Manarin Investments community room.(Roland Manarin, like the Schlott’s, opens his arms to the needs of the club). This meeting is important as the Board ofDirectors seeks input and guidance from the membership. The Board seeks guidance on what type of social events wouldencourage you to attend more frequently. Are you pleased with the track events? You get the picture. The greater theattendance the better chance the Club will offer what you seek. Hopefully next year attendance - and ideas from themembership - will increase.

Finally at the DE I met Kevin Schilling from Saint Louis! That’s quite a distance to travel to participate in a DriverEducation event. Kevin had his head in the wheel well, not unlike so many of us from time to time. I was inquisitive. Kevinblew a tire and was looking for solutions. Russ Rabeler, Mitch Schneringer, Andy Hipwell and Bob Smisek provided thatsolution. Kevin then sent me a note about the experience. It’s on page eight. It’’s a great read, and frankly, will make youproud to be associated with GPR and our major sponsor, Porsche of Omaha.

Oops, almost forgot. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! It’s time to VOTE for your 2014 Board of Directors. The ballot is at the bottomof page three. VOTE and either mail or message YOUR decision to Abe Schlott. The word VOTE is capitalized becauseit’s that important. Ya gotta VOTE.

YOU also need to tell us YOUR wishes with respect to the new Membership Directory to be published soon. Please seethe note below.
