Introduction:

If we ponder upon the statement of Allah (God) in the last revelation of Allah (God) to people (i.e. The Quran) in verse 12 of chapter 17 (Then, Allah (God) has obliterated the sign of the night while We have made the sign of the day illuminating, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the reckoning. And Allah (God) has detailed everything with full details), we realize that the Almighty teaches us that everything in His creation is detailed, which from an engineering point of view means that any system is governed by laws which Allah (God) ordained for it.

Thus the question now is how to know these laws that govern the various phenomena in creation?

Allah (God) teaches us in the Quran the manner by which to know any law in creation, such that a Muslim would be the teacher of others and not the one on the receiving end and this topic shows the manner by which to derive the law governing any phenomenon in the creation of Allah (God).

The methodology to deriver any law in creation:

To explain the methodology of deriving any law in creation from the Quran, I will present the following example:

If we wanted to know the law governing the phenomenon of displacements resulting from a compressive force acting on a structure as shown in figure 1.

1

Page 2: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 1: The phenomenon of induces displacements in a structure due to a compressive load.

The way to know the law governing this phenomenon is divided into three steps, which can be learnt by pondering upon the following three Quranic verses:

1. Firstly, if we ponder upon verse 19 of chapter 15 of the Quran: (And the earth Allah (God) has spread out, and has placed therein firm mountains, and caused to grow therein all kinds of things in balanced proportion), we learn that everything in creation is balance, which means from an engineering perspective that any system is balanced which implies that the sum of the inputs to the system must be equal to the sum of outputs from it, as shown in figure 2.

2

Page 3: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 2: The property of a balanced system.

Thus in the case of the example of the column subjected to a compressive force, the input to the system would be the force and the output would be the displacement of the column.

2. The second step in law derivation can be known by pondering upon verse 7 of chapter 55 (And the heaven He has raised it, and He has set up the scale), where it can be learnt that after Allah (God) created the heaven He placed the scale, and this scale is the scale of creation, which has on one side the inputs to the system and on the other the outputs from it. If we link all of this with the previous step we can know the design of this scale which is shown in figure 3.

3

Page 4: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 3: The second step in deriving any scientific law from the guidance of The Quran.

Thus in the example of the column the input is placed on its left side and the displacement is placed on its right, as shown in figure 4.

Figure 3: The second step in deriving any scientific law for any phenomenon.

3. The last step can be known by pondering upon verse 182 of chapter 26 (And weigh with the straight balance), where we find that the scale of creation is straight, and for a scale to be straight (meaning that the left

and right sides are on the same level) weights must be placed on one side to balance the other as shown in figure 4.

Figure 4: Getting a scale balanced by placing weights on one of its sides.

These weights are the relationships between the inputs and outputs of a system, such that if there is an increase in the value of the output when there is an increase in the value of the weight, then this weight is placed in the numerator ash shown in figure 6.

5

Page 6: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 6: Placing the weight in the numerator if there is a direct relationship between the weight and the output from the system.

And if there is an inverse relationship between the weight and output of a system then the weight is placed in the denominator as shown in figure 7.

Figure 7: Placing the weight in the denominator if there is an inverse relationship between the weight and the output from the system.

So in the case of the example of the column the weight is the stiffness of the column and there is an inverse relationship between the stiffness and the displacement of the column, since as the stiffness increases the displacement of the column decreases, and this is illustrated in figure 8.

Page 7: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 8: The last step to derive the law for any phenomenon.

Thus the law governing this phenomenon becomes the following:

Force (F) = Stiffness (k) * Displacement (x)

This law is now known as Hook’s law or the law of the spring, thus we see how Allah (God) Almighty teaches us the law for this phenomenon in seconds. And if we think about the time and effort that took Hook to derive and learn this law we see the superiority of the Quran and how Muslims did injustice to the Quran by deserting it.

Additional Examples:

Another example to demonstrate the methodology to derive any law from the guidance of the Quran, and this example is the phenomenon of the transfer of electrons (i.e. current) when a conductive material is subjected to a voltage difference on its ends as shown in figure 9.

7

Page 8: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 9: A conductive wire subjected to a voltage difference on its ends.

The manner by which to derive the law for this phenomenon is as follows:

1. The input to the system is the voltage difference and the output is the current.

2. The weight is the resistance of the conductive material.

3. As the resistance increases the current decreases while keeping the voltage difference constant, and thus the resistance is placed in the denominator as shown in figure 10.

8

Page 9: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

Figure 10: Derivation of the law governing the production of a current in a wire subjected to a voltage difference.

Thus the law becomes:

V = I * R

This law is now known as Ohm’s law which took Ohm years to derive, whereas Allah (God) teaches this law from the Quran in a matter of seconds.

The last example in this article is the phenomenon of heat transfer in a conductive material subjected to a temperature difference on its ends, as shown in figure 11.

Figure 11: The phenomenon of the transfer of heat in a material subjected to a temperature difference.

The manner to derive the law for this phenomenon is explained as follows:

1. The input to the system is the temperature difference and the output is the heat transfer in the material.

2. The weight between the input and output is the ability to material to conduct heat, the area, and the thickness of the material.

3. As the conductivity of the material increases heat transfer also increases and thus this weight is placed in the numerator. And as the area of the material increases the heat transfer also increases and thus the area is placed in the numerator. Lastly, as the thickness of the

Page 10: Derivation of Scientific and Engineering Laws from The Quran

material increases the amount of heat transfer decreases and thus it is placed in the denominator as shown in figure 12.

Figure 12: Derivation of the law governing the transfer of heat in a material subjected to a temperature difference.

Thus the law for this phenomenon becomes as follows:

This law is now known as Fourier’s law for heat conduction.

Thus we notice brothers and sisters the knowledge contained in the book of Allah (God), which a person can know by pondering upon the verses of the

Qruan and not just merely reciting them, and Allah (God) wants for believers to be the teachers of others in all branches of knowledge.
