A very warm welcome to this the second Derwent Art Prize Exhibition, which celebrates and rewards the very best creative art produced by the pencil.
The pencil was created and invented in Keswick in Cumbria some 450 years ago, following the discovery of graphite deposits in the Borrowdale valley. This graphite was of a very high quality and purity, so much so that it was once protected by an Act of Parliament. This material was the choice of artists for nearly 250 years until the graphite mines closed in 1895 driven by new techniques in the manufacturing of pencil cores, when clay was mixed with graphite.
The Cumberland Pencil Company has been producing high quality and innovative pencils since 1832 and we are rightly proud of our heritage and of our products and people. Our reputation and Brands are recognised throughout the world and we export to over 85 countries across the globe.
The entries we have received for the Derwent Art Prize categories amply reflect the global reach of our products and this year the quality of the entries has surpassed the very high standards set in the inaugural launch of these prestigious awards. The creativity, talent and passion for producing such a high standard of work using graphite and coloured pencils is truly staggering and a credit to all those who submitted their work. It is our pleasure to produce the array of pencil products that facilitate such works of art and to continue to leverage our heritage at the forefront of the very best pencil products available.
Sincere congratulations to all those who entered the awards this year and of course to those who have won awards, also our thanks to our distinguished selection panel of judges for their help and support in selecting the winners.
We look forward to continuing to support this annual awards competition and exhibition and in working with all of our artists and customers and consumers.
Best wishes
Simon Wells Vice President and General Manager The Cumberland Pencil Company
FOREWORD
Kate Macfarlane is a curator, writer, and Co-Founder/Director of the Drawing Room, located in Bermondsey, London. It is the only public and non-profit gallery in the UK and Europe dedicated to contemporary drawing, and provides a unique resource for the promotion of drawing, its practice, theory and methodology.
‘The exhibition demonstrates the limitless potential of the pencil to realise the ideas of an enquiring mind through a range of applications, many displaying considerable rigour and technical virtuosity in execution.’
Josh Spero is Editor of Spear’s Magazine and Art Critic for Tatler UK. He has written for The Times, The Independent, The Guardian, the Economist and the National Theatre.
‘It was thrilling to see the complex, modern and involving works people from all over the world created using simple, elegant materials - it goes to show that drawing is as strong an art form as ever.’
Professor Anita Taylor is an artist, Co-Founder & Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and the Dean of Bath School of Art & Design at Bath Spa University. She is also an Adjunct Professor of the University of Sydney affiliated to Sydney College of the Arts.
‘The Derwent Art Prize provides an exciting new global platform to understand, demonstrate and celebrate the capacities of contemporary drawing practices specifically explored through the means of the pencil - whether this be graphite, charcoal, carbon, coloured wax, pastel or watercolour - with a diversity exemplified by the works represented in this exhibition.’
