Descendants of Daniel Rathbone, Sr. Generation No.1 1. DEACON DANIEL 7 RATHBONE, SR (JOSHUA6, JOHNS, JOHJ:v4, THOMAi3, THOMAil, WlLUAM1) was born February 16, ]730/31 in Stonington, New London Co., CT1, and died January 17, 1823 in Rock City (now Milton), Saratoga Co., NY2. He married SAlWf HIGBEE May 04, 1758 in Middletown, Middlesex Co., Cr.2, daughter of HIGBEE and SAlWI CANDA. She was born March 24, 1738/392, and died August OS, 18352. Notes for DEACON DANIEL RATHBONE, SR.: From Rathbone Genealogy, by John C. Cooley, 1898 Syracuse NY, Press of the Courier Job Print TIlis history was learned mainly in 1877 ITomMrs. Abigail Beedter, the survivor of the 13 dlildren and who died in 1879: aged almost 100 years, and in part ITommemorandum letters and papers left by SolomonRathbone, one of the deceasedsons, and in part ITomother authentic sources. This briefhistory of Daniel Ra111bone was prepared by Hon. George W. Rathbone, son of Solomon, the son of Daniel. He (Daniel Rathbone) was in 111e clothing business in Sheffield,Prov. ofMassachuset:tsBay, also at Great Barrington, Mass. in 1760, where he carried on 111e c10111 dressing business; his works were on 111e Greeneriver, about onemile west of111evillage. In 1760 he was also engaged in c10111ier business at Stonington, COIm.Was moderator at town meeting of Great Barrington, MardI 30, 1766. He resided at Richmond, Berkshire Co., Mass., until all his children were grown np except Mercy Lois, who died in infancy, and then moved to Milton (Wilton?) or Rock City, as it is ususlly called in Saratoga Co., N.Y., where his two sons Daniel and Valentinehad preceded him andITOm111at time forward he and his wife lived wi111 their son Valentineand were not very kindly cared for by him. TIlis removal was somewherenot far ITom111e year 1804. From his Idlers and 0111er writings which have been preserved it appears he had a fair edUcatiOIl for those days and was a man of considerableinfluence. He wa a deacon in the Baptist church, an occasionalpreacher, but only to fill vacancies. He was never sdlled over a congregation. It appears also that he was a thrifty man, having money and lands whidl he disposed of in his old age in 111e way ofIoans and gifts, amonghis dlildren. TIle OIllyweak point so far as is known in his history is the fact 111at about 1780 he was carried away by 111e Shaker delusion, joined the Shaker community, seven miles distant ITomhim, at New Leban0I1, N.Y., at the head of which was Ann Lee, or Mo111er Anne, as she was called, 111e founder ofthe sect. He did not, however, remove ITomhis fann, and three years later, having discoveredhis mistake and become disgustedwith 111e socicty,he with his family withdrewITomit, and he published a full account of111eirdelusion.
