"'The Connection' in East Tennessee" lists Jacob Headrick as the son of John Headrick and Lizzie Myers. However, census and other documentable sources indicate a birth year of between 1790-92 (and sometimes evenearlier) for our Jacob. He seems too old to be the son of John Headrick and Lizzie Myers. But surely he is somerelation to these Headricks, judging by the proximity in census and the seeming interactions between the families. It is difficult to research these early Headrick lines.

For reference, following are a selection of Headricks found in census in Tennessee. In 1830, there is a JacobHeadrick in Jefferson Co., Tenn., as well as a Joseph. These are the Headricks located in on-line census searchesof Tennessee. There may be others.

1830:

William Heddrix, Blount, Tennessee Jacob Headdrix, Blount, Tennessee William Heddrix (2), Blount, Tennessee John Heddrix, Blount, Tennessee Sally Heddrix, Blount, Tennessee (not as close by) John Headrick, Cocke, Tennessee John Headrick, Hawkins, Tennessee Mansfield Headrick, Hawkins, Tennessee Jacob Headrick, Jefferson, Tennessee Joseph Headrick, Jefferson, Tennessee William Headrick, McMinn, Tennessee John Hedrick, Grainger, Tennessee John Hedrick, Monroe, Tennessee Elizabeth Hedrick, Sullivan, Tennessee Isaac Hedrick, Sullivan, Tennessee Jessee Hedrich Sullivan Co., Tenn.

Our Jacob married in Blount County. Murray County records show that our Headricks came from Blount County.Blount County deeds show no purchase or inheritance for "our" Jacob Headrick. Question: What, if any, is therelationship of our Jacob Headrick to nearby William M. Headrick, born 1800-1810 (married Susannah Borden in1824), next door to Jacob Borden?

1850:

Daniel Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee Daniel Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee Isaac Hedrick, Knox, Tennessee Jacob Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee [???] James Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee John Hedrick, Jefferson, Tennessee Joseph W Hedrick, Jefferson, Tennessee Peter Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee Thomas P Hedrick, Blount, Tennessee

Note: Jacob B. Headrick, of Walker County married Narcissa Katherine/Catherine Waters. He is the son ofWilliam and Anna; brother of Daniel Headrick who married Clarissa. Well documented ~ not our Jacob. [Pensionproves that.]

John Scott Headrick's middle name never seems to appear in documents. However, the man who, in MurrayCounty deeds, is called John 'The Scot' Headrick, is documented in later deeds on the same land as being thefather of H.H. Headrick. If he is the same John who inherited a portion of Jacob and Polly (Rice) Headrick's land, though, I have not found where any of it was ever sold. That may be correct--quite a few Headricks still live up innorthern Murray. They may be living on the old homestead. John and Rhoda Headrick did live with William andMary (Emert) Headrick in one census, so that seems to be good support for William and John as brothers; thoughrelationships weren't given in that census, as I recall.

Further research on this line of Babbs shows that Nancy may have died before 1847, because Joshua Babb thenmarried Elizabeth (Evans) Vandergriff (if this is truly the same Joshua). After Joshua died, Elizabeth thenremarried to Alfred Hicks, who had also been married previously. The ages of the children fit, and one on-lineindex of burials does show an Alfred C. Babb (died 1930, Ashland, Oregon), whose father was Joshua Babb andmother was "Mary" Hedrick, both of Missouri. (So far, this is the only Babb-Headrick line to be found; myconclusion is that "Mary" must actually be our Nancy Headrick.) The other Joshua Babb of Missouri, a soldier inthe 5th Tenn. Army, was too young to be the same Joshua. He was born 1834-6 and married Ruthy JulianCrabtree.

[A census indexer helped put together the various marriages of Joshua Babb. I think this would be the correctline. Notes for WILLIAM MATHEW HEADRICK:Noted in Deb Smyre's database, some of the Shields family ended up in Honey Creek, McDonald County,Missouri. It might be worth checking for Headricks, who also were in Missouri, if only briefly, at an unknownperiod, possibly after the Civil War.

Children of WILLIAM HEADRICK and MARY EMERT are:i. RHODA J.3 HEADRICK, b. 18 Feb 1845, Tennessee; d. 22 Mar 1920, ? Tenn./resided there in 1920.

Notes for RHODA J. HEADRICK:Rhoda Headrick apparently never married. Her tombstone says "Rhoda Headrick." I've never found a deathcertificate on her. (I did a written search in Georgia and Tennessee. I did not try individual counties, in casethe death cert. exists, but was never filed with the state. Her death is not in Murray County's death index.)

iii. JACOB TAYLOR HEADRICK, b. 23 Dec 1850, Murray Co., Georgia; d. 16 Oct 1935, Gibson Co., Tenn.; m.ANNA JANE HIGHTOWER, Abt. 1863; b. 1853, Tennessee; d. 1931, Gibson Co., Tenn. ?.

Notes for JACOB TAYLOR HEADRICK:Molly Kirkpatrick (wife of Daniel Joe Kirkpatrick), gave Jacob Taylor Headrick as the son of WilliamMathew and Mary Emert Headrick, and brother to W.A.L. Headrick. This has been confirmed by Jacob'sdeath certificate (Gibson County, Tennessee, 1935, "Jocab" Taylor Headrick). The certificate lists his place ofbirth as "Maury" (Murray) County Georgia, and his parents as William Headrick and Mary Emmett. It isunknown how this branch of the family ended up in West Tennessee, but that area is very close to thesoutheastern tip of Missouri. There are indications that the Headricks have some unknown tie to Missouri.

Headricks buried at White Rose Cemetery in Gibson County, Tennessee, are: Anne Jane Headrick 1853-1931;Jacob Taylor Headrick 1850 - 1935; Walter Lee Headrick 1881 - 1975; Martha Worley Headrick 1880 - 1967;Onie Ethel Headrick 9-12-1893 - 3-6-1958; and James Earl Headrick 10-16-1894 - 8-9-1930 (all buried inrow A25). Margaret Headrick Roberts 7-9-1927 and Claudius Max Headrick 1928 - 1929 are in row A26.

Please note that I had originally listed this individual as "Jacob J. Headrick," based on the 1860 Murray

County census. Possibly, I read the writing incorrectly. The census taker used great round flourishes. A "T"could possibly be mistaken for a "J." I have also seen Jacob P. Headrick as a variation of his name.

Notes for WILLIAM ABRAHAM LINCOLN HEADRICK:Also known as "Willie," and "Craze." He owned a woodshop. He has been called a carpenter, a cabinet makeror a chair and coffin maker, so apparently he did all kinds of woodwork. He used a horsepower to run thetools in his woodshop. In his book, "Life Chart," E.C. Caylor describes the horsepower: "There was a big shedat their house, and in that shed was a wood working shop that was powered by horse power, like an old cane

squeezer at a syrup making location. The horse was hitched to this beam and went around in a circle, and thatpowered the saw or wood lathe or what ever tool was being used." (p.26) W.A.L. Headrick also farmed, likemost of the men in Murray County.

E.C. Caylor identifies the "Craze" Headrick farm as being about one-half mile east of the "Jiles" Dunn farm.

Notes for WILFREY JAKE GREEN:Scant clue: one old genealogy gave his name as Ulysses Winfrey Green. If that is so, here's a clue, possiblyhelpful in locating grandchildren: Youlas Green Headrick, born to L.V. and P.J. (McQueary) Headrick of CollinCo., Texas (source birth certificate on-line at Footnote.com). L.V. Headrick, the father of Youlas Green Headrick, was born in Georgia, according to his child's birth certificate. I was already searching Collin Co., Texas, becausesome of Giles Dunn's offspring ended up in Altoga, Collin Co., Texas. Also, some of the male Greens do have themiddle initial of "V." I was already searching for more info. on L.V. Headrick, based on some other document Ifound on-line. (I just have to try to remember why...) Send data to Lynda Gibbs Ellis. 6. ANN2 HEADRICK (JACOB1) was born Abt. 1830 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1870 in ? (See notes) ?. Shemarried JEREMIAH CROWSON Bef. 1846. He was born 1823 in Tennessee, and died Bet. 1866 - 1923.

Notes for ANN HEADRICK:Ann Headrick Crowson did not sign the 1866 property deed for division of Jacob and Polly Headrick's land. Herhusband, Jeremiah, did. However, the census of 1870 shows that Ann was still living. The deed was not recordeduntil 1870, so Ann may have been deceased by then. It might help to look at Georgia property and inheritancelaws of 1870, and find out what the guidelines were for transference of inherited property (who could sign, etc.)This suggested line of research is not based on any question of the propriety or impropriety of Jeremiah's signingof the deed, but is a clue in giving us a better range of death for Ann (Headrick) Crowson. The death range now, based on the documentation available, is between 1870 (date of last census documentation) to 1935 (date ofreaching 105); with a clue of looking at 1870, to see if the date of record on a land deed might provide furtherclues.

Notes for JEREMIAH CROWSON:An LDS file places Jeremiah, born 1823, as a son of Abraham Crowson, of Giles Co., Tenn., who was a brotherof West Crowson. They both moved into Wear's Cove, Sevier County. Persons researching this family as a directline might look in that direction.

7. JAMES2 HEADRICK (JACOB1) was born 15 Jan 1832 in Tennessee, and died 14 Apr 1912 in Murray Co., Ga..He married ELIZABETH DUNN Abt. 1856, daughter of WILLIAM DUNN and MARY SHIELDS. She was born 28 Aug1836 in Tennessee, and died 14 May 1909 in Murray Co., Ga..

Notes for JAMES HEADRICK:This James Headrick is supposed to be the son of Jacob Headrick and Mary "Polly" Rice.

This line is controversial. One problem is that there are several James Headricks, all born around 1831-1832.These various families were originally in Blount Co., Tenn., but moved to Murray County. One moved out toMissouri. One line out west that traced itself to our Murray County Headricks in error, and supposedly gotpublished in a 1909 book. That error has since been corrected, according to one researcher. I studied thepossibility that James and brother, William, moved out to Missouri after the Civil War and then moved back; but,I think it's more likely there was a mix-up with another pair of brothers of similar names. Some descendants of aCasper Headrick of Lumpkin Co., Georgia, were briefly in Murray County, and some descendants of Caspermoved to Missouri. Also, some Headrick-Rhea lines of Blount County moved out west. Quite a few Headrickswent west, but I have no indication that James and Elizabeth ever did.

At least one line of descendants is working on tracing an illegitimate line. These researchers have gooddocumentation, but the circumstances, naturally, have led to a good bit of confusion. The good news is thatresearchers seem to be making good headway on fitting these puzzle pieces together. It would be better to consultthe genealogies of descendants who are working on those direct lines. Recent lineages are not included here.

One particular problem of mine is G.B. or G.L. Headrick. Why must clerks always use initials? I believe that Ihave the correct marriage for Green Headrick, but there is room for error, especially since his middle initialdoesn't always match up.

Documented, apparent record:We have John Madison and Sarah E.M. (Harden) Headrick, but will hold this couple separate until moredocumentation is found.

A similar John and brother, Levi, appear to be living in Prairie, Johnson Co., Arkansas, with a family by thename of Harris in 1880. The Harrises might be some kin to Will Harris, who married John Scott's daughter,Cora. It could be a coincidence--it could be some other John and Levi, though the ages are right.

Notes for SARAH E. M. HARDEN:"Dinkie Chambers," Dink Harden, Ella Pierce, are some of the names associated here. The confusion isprobably caused by multiple marriages and by some children taking on the names of stepparents.

Sarah E.M. Harden was born to John and Malissa Elizabeth (Dial or Deal) Harden. John died around 1864 or1865 and Malissa remarried to John Chappel Chambers (apparently). Sarah and her siblings then took thesurname of their stepfather, "Chambers," as it appears in census. Sarah reclaimed the surname of "Harden," asshown in the Murray County marriage record of John Headrick and Sarah E.M. Harden.

However, there is another Headrick marriage that falls into the right era and could be researched as a possiblespouse for Malinda: Dunn, William married Headrick, Mollie on 30 Jun 1889; Murray County, Georgia, marriage book VI, p.98. 8. JOHN SCOTT2 HEADRICK (JACOB1) was born 14 Jan 1834 in Tennessee, and died 18 Nov 1915 in Murray Co.,Georgia. He married RHODA DUNN 25 Mar 1860 in Murray Co., Georgia, daughter of WILLIAM DUNN andMARY SHIELDS. She was born 1840 in Tuckaleechee Cove, Blount Co., Tenn., and died 27 Jun 1906 in ?MurrayCo., Georgia?.

Notes for JOHN SCOTT HEADRICK:Problems with John "Scott" Headrick: land deeds actually refer to him as John "the Scot" Headrick, seeminglyindicating that he could be of Scottish ancestry. [Our Jacob is supposed to be a "Dutchman" (prob. German);wouldn't John also be one?] Also, don't some census records give Virginia as John's (and his parents') birth place?

16 09 Apr 2012

John bought his own land in Murray County. I've never found where he sold any of Jacob's land (though perhapshis descendants still own it).

One thing pointing to kinship between Old Jake and Polly Headrick and John "the Scot" Headrick is that John andRhoda Headrick are found living with in one census. Also, there is a "John" among the heirs of old Jacob andPolly Headrick. More work needs to be done before you fully accept John "the Scot" Headrick.

John and Rhoda do live in the household of our Headricks as a young married couple. Surely this indicateskinship? [Ref. I think it's the 1870 census, with William and Mary (Emert) Headrick. Doublecheck!]

According to E.C. Caylor, his "great-grandpa, John Scott Headrick, did not participate in the Civil War. He saidhe didn't want to fight his neighbors, so he hid out in the mountains until the war was over." [p.390]

Originally, I had understood him to say"Leech and Letch," but there was only Letch. I haven't discovered, yet, which Headrick bore this nickname. Notes for HARRIET A. HALL:Possibly, Harriet is buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Tennga, Murray Co., Georgia. Other Halls areburied there, and Jacob, her husband, is buried near the Halls. Jacob's grave is in a large space, presumablysurrounded by many unmarked graves. There are also some very old field-stone markers in the rows behindJacob's grave. Columbus Hall and wife are buried near Jacob. Their stone is of a more modern design than nearbystones.

Notes for WILLIAM H. HEADRICK:Searches for William H. Headrick of Alabama turned up two results:

William Headrick married Florence. Has a sister named Cordelia. That fits very well. His birth year kind oflooks like 1869 and is indexed as such, but comparing the other digits made by the census taker, I think itcould easily be 1862, which fits.

There's another William Headrick who married Georgia ???. I don't know if the name could be GeorgiaFlorence ??? or if these records are incorrect. This family group is highly speculative. I can't find that Williamever had children. If he had, some death certificates might turn up to help with this record.
