General Notes: William S. Graves was a Cherokee Indian adopted by the Graves Family during the "Trail of Tears". William went to TN to visit his mother and siblings and while there, married Elizabeth Allman. The 1860 Dallas County, MO census Had William in Washington Township, PO

Long Lane. The 1870 Denton County census list the family. Eliza Jane Myers was living with William Graves in the 1870 census. The Graves and Allman families moved to Dallas County, MO together. The Graves family settled on Elm Creek near Springtown. In 1861 the Graves, Rogers and Allman family moved to Parker County, TX. William S. Graves served in the Civil War in Griffin's Inf Co B and as a corporal in the 21st Inf Vo G. In 1868 they fled from Quannah Paker, Comanche Chief, raids to Denton County near Pilot Point. The Hope Family History Book indicates that William and Elizabeth Graves moved their family of 11 children from MO to TX and settled on Elm Creek where there would be plenty of timber for fuel and fences. General Notes: John enlisted in Dec 1862 in TX and served in the Civil War under General McGruder or M. C. Gruder as a driver. He deserted on 20 Dec 1863 and re-enlisted as a private Jan 1864. Nov 1864, John Franklin Rogers was in Beaumont listed as sick. Jan 1865 he was granted a leave for 60 days (5 Jan through 5 Mar). This would explain Molly's November 1865 birth. After the war he rode back to Parker County on an Army mule. He considered himself lucky, as most of the soldiers had to walk back home. Later he branded over the Army brand and traded the mule for a "cow" horse. The Comanche Indians were coming out of Oklahoma following the Cross Timbers and raiding the settlers. In a Kiowa raid, Mahala's aunt was killed and her two daughters were captured. During one raid, Malaha took her two girls, Nannie and Mary Elizabeth out of the house and into some bushes to hide until the raid was over. Several men trailed the Indians after the raid, but were ambushed near Newcastle. John was riding the mule and the others were on horses. She shows in their home in the 1900 Grayson County census as age 12. Due to the constant raids, John and his family moved to Grayson County, settling on land about one mile east of Tioga, in 1873. They had a large black-land farm and raised draft horses. John was greatly involved in the development of Tioga and built the first two-story brick building around the old public square. John was president of the First Guaranty State Bank of Tioga, School Trustee, and 32nd Degree Mason. John and his wife, Malaha, were founding members of the Shilo Methodist Church in 1887 with a Rev Allen as pastor. The church was located 2 miles east of Tioga, TX at a location southeast of the present FM 121 and a small creek known as Martin's Branch, on the northwest corner of their farm. On the northeast corner was a one room log school house called Shiloh. After the town of Tioga was established, the Shiloh Methodist Church purchased a lot at the present location in 1893. Some of the members were Mollie Rogers, Nannie Rogers, Mrs. John Rogers, Mrs. McElroy and Maggie McElroy. One member of special record was Olan R. VanZandt who served in the Texas House of Representatives and The Texas Senate. John is buried in Masonic addition, Square 2, Block 2, Lot 6 of the Community Cemetery, Pilot Point, Denton County, TX. John's grandson told Fran that John was born near Rogersville, TN and at about the age of 5, his family migrated to MO. ISSUE: The 1850 MO census listed John's parents as both being born in MO. Dau 9 KS US US Nathaniel said he came to TX with his family from MO at age 5, settling in Parker County near Weatherford. They drove burros and ox wagons trains to TX. In his younger days while living in Parker County near Springtown, he had much experience with wolves, wild buffaloes and Indains. Nathaniel lived in Parker County until Quanah Parker, Chief of the Comanche Indians, led his tribe on the warpath against the white man in that area of the county. He related a horrible adventure of an Indian Massacre from which his father, William Graves, fled with his family to Grayson County in 1868. His aunt was killed and two girls were taken captive. Later through the U.S. Government one of the little girls was returned, but the other one died shortly after being taken and was left on the prairie. Nathaniel attended the Jones School and became a well-to-do farmer and cattle rancher in that community. He was intimate friends with Tom Waggoner of Ft Worth and knew quite well the famous Sam Bass and Frank James and the father of former governor, Bill Murray, of OK. (Article taken from the Sherman Democrat...11/17/31) In a letter from gail Foster Davis he stated that Ben identified the Aunt who was killed in the raid as Sara Allman/Myers/Hamilton. Buried in Masonic section of the Community Cemetery.
