The Roles of a Teacher
Teachers are in charge of the class and of the activity taking place.
They tell students things, organise drills and read aloud.
Teacher –fronted classroom.
Controller
Teachers are sometimes involved in a role play activity for example, students lose the thread of what is going on, or they are ‘ lost for words’.
When teachers prompt, they need
to:
• Do it sensitively and encouragingly but, with
discretion.
Prompter
If we are too adamant, we risk taking initiative away from students.
If we are too retiring, we may not supply the right amount of encouragement.
Prompter ( continued)
Teachers might want to join in an activity not only a teacher, but also as a participant in their own right.
Participating is often more enjoyable than acting as a resource for the teacher.
Students enjoy having the teacher with them.
Participant
Teachers can be one of the most important resources students have because; Students might need to ask how to
say or write something. They might need to ask what a word
or phrase means. They might want to know
information about where to look for something such as a book or a website.
Teachers want to be helpful and available. No teacher knows everything about the language.
Resource
Teachers can work with individuals or small groups.
Pointing them in directions they have not yet thought of taking.
It is difficult to be a tutor in a very large group since the term implies a more intimate relationship than that of a controller or organiser.
Teachers can allow personal contact and real chance to feel supported and helped.
Tutor

Describing teacher performance styles
Write two and three sentences to describe your most memorable teacher:
The Teacher as a Person
My most memorable teacher was Ayhan Gürsel. He was my English teacher when I was 15. He was nice and friendly to his students. He wanted to make sure that everyone understood what he was talking about. He found fun ways to learn things. That is why he was my favorite teacher.
