    Descriptive Paragraph Assignment

    Descriptive writing is like painting with words. Verbs need to beactive; nouns need to be specific, and many good adjectives will adddetails. Good description always has a sense of organization that

    readers can easily follow as they assemble the picture in their minds. Inthis paragraph, you will be writing a description of the old hag in TheScarlet Pimpernel . You may describe her as she sits and watches the

    guillotine or as she sits on her wagon that is leaving Paris. Be sure yourwriting leaves a distinct impression on your reader an impression so

    clear and detailed that they could actually draw her for you. Yourparagraph is a written version of a Wanted Poster.

    FOLLOW THE WRITING PROCESS:

    Prewriting: Thinking about a topic, brainstorming, and planning.

    1. Your pod will work together to make as many descriptive phrases about the hag as possible.

    2. Use the pictures to help you create these phrases.3. Write your phrases on the paper provided for you.

    Drafting: Getting your thoughts on paper.1. Look over your notes. Decide what information you want to use.2. Remember, use the setting as introduction and conclusion.

    3. Number your notes in the order you want to use them.4. Open a Word document and make your notes into numbered

    sentences - include your introduction, body, and conclusion. Youmay combine several of your notes into one sentence.

    Revising: Reworking the organization and details.1. Make sure you have made a sandwich topic sentence, very

    detailed descriptive sentences, and a conclusion.

    2. Are your details in a logical order? (order of importance or spatialorder)

    3. Did you use transitions and a variety of sentence starters ?Highlight them in yellow.

    Editing: Reviewing and correcting spelling, punctuation, capitalization,grammar, and format.

    1. Did you use spell check and grammar check?

    2. Did you read your sentences aloud to someone else?3. Check carefully for awkward sentences and run-on sentences .4. Did you put your corrected sentences into paragraph form?

    (remove numbers, indent first line, use continuous writing , 1
