Desiccant Dehumidification - How It Works

How it Works ...Humid (process) air (1) is drawn into the dehumidifierthrough a filter (2) and a specially designed plenum. The air passes through the rotor (3) where moistureis adsorbed by the desiccant.

As moisture is adsorbed by the desiccant, heat isgiven off to the air stream. This heat gain causes thedry bulb temperature of the air stream to increase. The dehumidified air passes through a secondplenum and is discharged (4) by the process airblower.

The reactivation air (5) is drawn through a filter (6),heated (7) and enters the rotor through an insulatedplenum. Heating the air reduces the relative humidityof the reactivation air and increases its moistureholding capacity. The reactivation air also heats thedesiccant, reducing its moisture holding capacity anddelivers the necessary heat of vaporization to drivethe moisture from the desiccant in vapor form. As thisprocess continues, the reactivation air dry bulbtemperature is reduced due to the conversion ofmoisture to vapor. The reactivation air passes

through another plenum and is discharged (8) by thereactivation air blower.

The plenums are constructed to keep the processand reactivation air streams from mixing.

While the dehumidifier is operating, the rotor iscontinuously turned by the drive motor and belt (9).The moisture adsorbed from the process air streamis carried to the reactivation zone where the moistureis transferred to the reactivation air stream.

The air streams pass concurrently through the rotorin a counterflow air pattern. The process and reacti-vation air streams follow separate and isolated pathsthrough the dehumidifier. They are prevented frommixing by four significant design features:

• Entering through isolated plenums.• Solid rotor flute construction.• Unique process to reactivation face seals.• Double peripheral seals on each face.

DHP Series DehumidifiersThe DHP Series models are industrialduty dry desiccant dehumidifiers. Theydehumidify a space or process applica-tion to a humidity level chosen by theuser without lowering the air temperature.Using desiccant air drying technology, humidity can be reduced to levels belowthat which is achievable with a refrigera-tion based dehumidification system.Capacity range is from 750 through15,000 scfm.

DHP Series dehumidifiers even allow coldair streams to be dehumidified withoutfurther reducing the air temperature, sofreezing and/or frosting of components isprevented. Air to be dehumidified is drawn into the unit, filtered, dehumidified and then supplied to the spaceor process to be conditioned. Each dehumidifier is complete with all the necessary blowers, controls, filters anddrive components to assure the safe and automatic operation of the unit. Single point electrical power connec-tion is provided.

DHP Series Systems Offer Outstanding AdvantagesFlexibilityThe DryHandler Plus is manufactured using pre-designed modules which are integrated together withthe main DryHandler module on a single mountingskid. With this method SATS can rapidly incorporatecustom features using a standardized approach tothe system design and manufacture.

Desiccant RotorThe advantage to ourdehumidifying technologyis in the rotary style, desiccant rotor which ismanufactured using aunique, media (substrate)formulated for maximumperformance with minimalmaintenance.

The high performance silica gel desiccant is non-corrosive and non-toxic. The rotor is equipped with anon-slip, synchronous, belt-drive system.DHP Series dehumidifiers utilize an 8" deep rotor to

achieve the published performance data. For dewpoint requirements below those shown, please consultthe factory.

The desiccant is not adversely affected by exposureto air even at 100% relative humidity nor to idle or toprolonged storage in humid atmospheres. Thedehumidification rotor is capable of sustained opera-tion with either or both the process or the reactivationblower operating without reactivation heat applied.Such operation does not cause loss of desiccant orsoftening of the rotor.

The rotor is cleanable with either warm water, deter-gent or a solvent solution without damage or loss ofdesiccant. Performance is virtually unaffected. Degra-dation due to washing of the rotor is less than 3%over 10 years. This slight loss in performance isaccounted for in the published performance data.Initially, measured performance of a dehumidifier isactually better than indicated by the published datadue to SATS’s conservative approach to applicationsengineering.

The desiccant rotor is backed by a standard exclusivewarranty for five (5) years against softening or col-lapse due to exposure to humid air.

DHP Series Dehumidifiers - Outstanding Advantages

Pressure Indicating GaugesDifferential pressure indicatinggauges are provided to indicatethe pressure drops across therotor for air balancing.

Separate gauges are provided forprocess and reactivation airstreams. The gauges are factorymounted on the cabinet andvisible without requiring the remov-al of any panels or access covers. The gauges have a large face anddial and are suitable for eitherindoor or outdoor applications.

Air SealsThe process and reactivation sections are providedwith air seals to prevent leakage and mixing of one airstream to the other.

The rotor face seals are constructed of a two plymaterial with the contact surface made of a reinforcedPTFE material. The PTFE is bonded to a flexiblebacker to allow for thermal expansion and contraction. The seals and rotor construction allow for indepen-dent adjustment and balancing of the process orreactivation air flow. Dual, double lipped, continuoushigh temperature silicone seals are utilized to seal therotor periphery flange. Balloon or bulb type seals, which tend to split, are not used.

BlowersProcess Air Blower:A process air blower is provided and sized for the airrequirements of standard DHP Series units as listed inthe performance tables in section 5. The externalstatic pressure (ESP) available for standard units isalso shown in the tables.

Smaller units utilize directdriven process air blowers.Larger units utilize dual beltdriven process air blowers thatinclude an adjustable pulley toallow for field adjustment.

The process blower shaft is sealed to prevent mois-ture infiltration into the dehumidification system. Thestandard blower orientation is horizontal discharge.Up blast or other discharge orientations are available.

Reactivation Air Blower:A reactivation blower is provided and sized for the airrequirements of standard units. DHP Series unitsutilize direct drive reactivation blowers as standard. The standard blower orientation is horizontal dis-charge. Up blast or other discharge orientations areavailable as factory options.

MotorsIndustrial duty motors for either process or reactiva-tion blowers are TEFC and suitable for either indooror outdoor installation. Premium efficiency motors arealso available.

DampersManual air flow regulating dampers are provided asstandard on all direct drive blowers. Direct driveblowers have a single blade damper with bronzebushing. An external adjusting arm and positivelocking mechanism is included.

Opposed blade air flow regulating dampers areoptionally provided for belt driven blowers and formixing sections. dehumidification effectiveness.

The rotor is shaft mounted and supported by ballbearings for long life and minimum maintenance. Theball bearings support the full weight of the rotorwithout inducing stress on the rotor’s outer wrapperor flutes.

Rotor rotation failure detection is not required toprotect the rotor and is not provided on standardunits however, it is available as a factory installedoption.

The speed reducer drive motor is housed within thecassette section of the dehumidifier cabinet and isnot exposed to ambient conditions.

Reactivation HeaterDHP Series units are available with electric, steam orgas fired reactivation heater sections. Heaters arecontrolled by an adjustable, solid state proportionalcontrol system designed to prevent overheating andprovide energy conservation by matching heat inputto the required moisture removal rate. The reactiva-tion heater section is mounted in an insulated hous-ing to minimize heat loss and to prevent incidentalcontact with hot surfaces by operating or servicepersonnel. This important conservation and safetyfeature is provided for all DHP Series units.

Electric Reactivation:Electric reactivation heaters havethree (3) levels of safety: airproving, high temperature over-heat cut out and leaving reactiva-tion temperature control. A reacti-vation cool down cycle removesresidual heat from the systemwhen the unit shuts down.

Electric reactivation heatersinclude an air proving safety switchthat is wired in the heater controlcircuit to prevent the heater fromoperating during loss of reactiva-tion airflow.

Additionallly, two high temperature safety cutouts areinstalled in the heater control circuit. One tempera-ture sensor is located between the heater and therotor inlet. The second temperature sensor is in-stalled in the reactivation air discharge. In the event

of an overheat occurrence, a fault light located onthe operator’s panel is signaled. A manual resetdevice is provided in order to avoid attemptedoperation by automatic resetting devices during afault condition.

Steam Reactivation:Steam heating coils are housed in an easily accessi-ble insulated section to ensure maximum thermaltransfer to the reactivation air stream and provide forpersonnel safety. This innovative design featurecomplies with OSHA regulations concerning person-nel safety protection from hot surfaces. Steam coilsare the non freeze steam distributing type. Coilconnections are stubbed out through the dehumidifi-er cabinet. Coil removal is provided through the frontof the cabinet as part of the service access.

The “heated to” temperature is limited by the supplysteam pressure. The reactivation leaving tempera-ture is automatically controlled by a factory installedsolid state controlled modulating damper. Thisstandard control feature conserves steam consump-tion by matching energy input with the requiredmoisture removal rate. When humidity loads are lessthan design conditions the controller modulates thedamper toward the closed position. As this modula-tion occurs, less air passes over the steam coilscausing less steam to be condensed. The damperspring returns closed when the unit is shut down orpower is removed. Since the steam coils do not “cooldown” unless the steam supply is turned off, a cooldown cycle is not required.

Direct Fired Gas Reactivation:Direct fired natural or LP gas reactivation heaters areavailable and include all the necessary controls todetect and monitor the gas flame. The ignitionsequence is controlled by a UL/FM/CSA approvedflame safety relay device. Controls include an airproving switch that is wired in the heater controlcircuit to prevent the heater from operating if thereactivation blower fails. An observation window isincluded to allow for the visual confirmation of thegas flame without removal of a service panel.

Two high temperature safety cutouts are installed inthe heater control circuit. One temperature sensor islocated between the heater and the rotor inlet. Thesecond temperature sensor is installed in the reacti-vation air discharge. In the event of an overheatoccurrence, a fault light located on the operator’spanel is signaled. A manual reset device is provided

in order to avoid attempted operation by automaticresetting devices during a fault condition.

A control system regulates the reactivation leavingtemperature. Energy saving automatic modulation ofthe gas supply is provided as standard. The gas firedreactivation heaters are mounted in double-wallsections with 300 series stainless steel liners.

The gas train is designed to NFPA guidelines. Compli-ance to local codes for venting and other require-ments are the responsibility of the owner.

The pilot flame can be adjusted and set independentof the main flame. Separate gas pressure regulatorvalves are provided for the pilot and main gas line. Aspark igniter system is used. Gas fired reactivationheaters have at least eight (8) levels of control andsafety features: air proving, ignition control, flamedetection, high gas pressure cutout, low gas pressurecutout, slow opening main gas supply valve, “heatedto” high temperature limit and reactivation leavingtemperature control. A reactivation cool down andpurge cycle removes residual heat and the by prod-ucts of combustion from the system when the unitshuts down. Indirect gas fired reactivation heaters areavailable as an option.

Cabinet ConstructionThe dehumidifier is constructed of high grade 5052aluminum alloy for corrosion protection. Standardunits have 1/8" thick single wall construction with rigidsupports. The outer surface is coated with an industri-al self etching “direct to metal” high quality low VOCepoxy coating. This coating system is designed foreither indoor or outdoor exposure.

Hinged service access doors or removable panels areprovided to allow for the service or replacement of all

major components without disconnecting duct work orpower supply connections. Full jam gaskets arestandard to prevent moisture infiltration into thecabinet. Convenient, turn-to-lock handles are provid-ed on access doors.

Test ports are provided as standard. Ports arelocated to allow for the measurement of temperatureor humidity both upstream and downstream of thedesiccant rotor. A port is also provided to allow for themeasurement of the reactivation “heated to” tempera-ture. These convenient test ports allow for the confir-mation of design conditions during startup andoperating cycles.

Double wall construction with 2” internal insulation isavailable as an option for applications when the inletair temperature is below the ambient air dew pointtemperature to prevent condensation from forming onthe cabinet. This option will also retard heat gain to alow temperature space should the dehumidifier belocated within the controlled space.

Process Air Blower Orientation:Standard units are of the Left hand orientation asshown in the preceding photo. The photo depicts aDHP unit with an optional, process air inlet weatherhood. The process air outlet is on the left side (hid-den from this view) as you are facing the accesspanels on the front of the unit. Right hand process airoutlet orientations are also available.

Skid:The dehumidifier skid is designed to support the fulloperating weight of the unit and to allow for rigging, transportation and handling at the job site. Liftingpoints are provided as standard to assist in loadingand placing the equipment at the job site.

Connections:All air connections have flanges as standard. Flangesare left blank for match drilling in the field. Optionalinlet and outlet designs include weather protectedhooded intakes or hooded outlets.

DHP Series Dehumidifiers - Outstanding Advantagespeak design conditions. If not controlled properly, toomuch energy would be consumed to meet perfor-mance requirements. Energy conservation controlensures that enough reactivation energy is applied tomeet the performance by modulating the reactivationheater. DHP Series capacity control methods utilizethe built-in, variable capacity of the high performancesilica gel desiccant to maintain the desired controlsetpoint.

Energy conservation is becoming an increasinglyimportant factor for engineers to consider whendesigning building environmental controls. Customaryface and bypass control, used to maintain humiditylevels, is rendered archaic when compared withexclusive energy saving capacity control methodsdesigned by SATS.

Capacity Control MethodsD-Stat II™:The D-Stat II control system is recommended wherethe dehumidifier is part of an air handling system orwhere control tolerance is more critical.

The dehumidifier responds to a control signal from ahumidistat. In the “AUTO” mode the dehumidifierresponds to a humidistat and remote start/stop signal.A wall mounted humidistat is available as an option forfield mounting. Terminal connections are included inthe electrical enclosure for connection of the humidis-tat. The D-Stat control system cycles the reactivationheater and blower On and Off to save energy whilethe process blower operates continuously. Thisfeature provides for an uninterrupted supply of air tothe space or process area. This is particularly impor-tant in systems where the humidity is just one of thecontrolled parameters. Air volume for upstream ordownstream heating or cooling processes are unaf-fected by the D-Stat II control system. The uniqueSATS control system monitors both the reactivationheater temperature and reactivation leaving tempera-ture to provide optimum drying while minimizingenergy consumption.

A wall mounted humidistat is available as an option forfield mounting.

“Trac” Control SystemsThe exclusive Dew-Trac™, H-Trac™ and C-Trol II™proportional control systems continuously adjust thedehumidifier capacity in response to load changeswithin the controlled space. Load changes can occurdue to changes in manufacturing rates, ventilation, product movement in, or out, of the “space” or man-

2-8

power requirements, etc. Since capacity is controlledby reactivation energy, only the minimal amount ofenergy is required to maintain design conditions.

Dew-Trac and H-Trac control methods can be utilizedfor precise humidity control without the use of custom-ary face and bypass damper sections. By eliminatingthe damper section, air instability, damper “leakage”,and actuator hysteresis are eliminated. Serviceintervals are extended as fewer mechanical compo-nents are required. Response to a change in load israpid and initiates as quickly as the signal reachesthe heater control system.

Dew-Trac:The Dew-Trac control system is recommended forapplications where the controlled humidity level isbelow the capability of a relative humidity sensor orwhere the dew point control is more critical to themanufacturing or laboratory process than controlbased upon relative humidity.

The dehumidifier responds to a control signal from adew point transmitter. In the “ON” mode the Dew-Traccontroller automatically regulates the reactivationheater to provide a constant process air leaving orspace dew point temperature. In the “AUTO” modethe dehumidifier responds to a remote start/stopsignal. The Dew-Trac control feature may include anoptional space mounted dew point sensor/ transmitterand adjustable set point microprocessor controller.

H-Trac:The dehumidifier responds to a control signal from anoptional unit mounted or space mounted relativehumidity transmitter. In the “ON” mode the H-Traccontroller automatically regulates the reactivationheater to provide a constant relative humidity of eitherthe process air or “space” condition. In the “AUTO”mode the dehumidifier responds to a remote start/stop signal. The H-Trac control feature may includean optional adjustable set point microprocessorcontroller. With the H-Trac control system, the dehu-midifier runs continuously and maintains a constantrelative humidity.

C-Trol II:The C-Trol II control system is recommended toprevent dripping and damage caused by condensate. The dehumidifier responds to a signal from thesystem controller to prevent condensation fromforming on cold surfaces such as pipes, tanks, pumps or any surface in contact with a cold liquid. Acold surface temperature sensor and a space RH/

Page 12: Desiccant Dehumidification From 750 to 7,250 Scfmats.stulz.com/fileadmin/US_STULZ_USA/documents/PDF/... · Desiccant Dehumidification From 750 to 7,250 Scfm ... SATS is dedicated

temperature sensor are field installed by the contrac-tor. The controller compares the cold surface temper-ature to the ambient dew point temperature (calculat-ed by the controller) and controls the reactivationheater output as required.

Reactivation is controlled to maintain space dewpointto 5 degrees below the cold surface temperature. Ifthe space dewpoint is satisfied and the reactivationheater output is 0% for a pre-determined time period, the reactivation heater and blower will turn OFF tosave energy. When dehumidification is again re-quired, the reactivation will automatically re-start. Theprocess blower runs continuously.

Wiring Practices:Branch circuit protection, motor starters and overloadprotection are provided in accordance with the latestedition of the National Electric Code. All wiring is runin flexible liquid tight conduit. All wires are individuallynumbered and harness bundles are neatly tiewrapped. A grounding lug is provided in the electricalenclosure.

A lockable disconnect switch is available. It may beprovided as a factory installed option or shippedloose for field installation. When factory installed, thedisconnect is mounted on the dehumidifier cabinetand the power cable is factory wired between thepower supply terminals located within the electricalenclosure and the disconnect.

An elapsed run time hour meter isprovided as standard. The hourmeter is mounted within the electricalenclosure.

Pre/Post CoolingCooling coils may be mounted in the process air-stream before and/or after the desiccant rotor. Thecooling modules may use either DX (direct expansion)refrigeration or a CW (chilled water) cooling process.Pre-cooling may be used to cool and condensemoisture from the process airstream before it entersthe rotor. Moisture from the air condenses on the finsof the coil(s) and collects in a drain pan positionedbeneath each coil. Post cooling may be used to coolthe process air after it passes through the rotor. Postcooling may be used for maintaining the temperatureof the air being delivered to the space or processapplication. A stainless steel drain pan is provided foreach cooling coil.

DHP Series Dehumidifiers - Outstanding AdvantagesCondensing Units:A Remote Condensing Unit (RCU) is required tocondense refrigerant in DX cooled systems. The RCUmay be customer provided or selected as an optionand sized by SATS. R-22 refrigerant is utilized as astandard. Other refrigerants are optionally available.

Pre/Post HeatingHeating coil(s) may be mounted in the process airstream before the process side of the rotor for pre-heating and/or after the process side of the rotor forpost heating the process air. The heating modulesmay be electric heating elements or hot water/steamcoils.

Pre-heating may be used in cold environments toprevent the pre-cooling coils from freezing or icingover. Post-heating may be used to heat the processair after it passes through the rotor; for maintainingthe temperature of the air delivered to the space tobe conditioned.

Air Mixing ModuleAn air mixing module is optionally available with amanual balancing damper and manual locking hard-ware as standard.

Power SupplyA single point electrical power connection is provided. An optional main power disconnect is available. DHPSeries dehumidifiers are designed to operate using480/3/60 input power. Optional operating voltagesavailable are (208/230)/3/60 and 575/3/60. Optional50 Hz operation is also available.

WarrantySATS provides a limited warranty for 24 months fromdate of start up for mechanical and electrical compo-nents. Normal wear and tear is excluded. (Certainterms and conditions apply.) The desiccant rotor iscovered by an exclusive 60 month warranty againstsoftening or collapse even if exposed for prolongedperiods to saturated air.

Start UpStart up kits including replacement fuses control panelindicating lamps, blower belts and filters are available.

Supervision of start up activity or performance ofstartup can be provided by the SATS Product SupportGroup or by a factory authorized contractor for alldehumidifiers.
