Page 2: Design and Renovation of the Soibada Pilgrimage Timor Leste

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY1. Over one hundred years ago, Soibada was

the most famous village in the whole country of Timor, due to the establishment of a college by a group of Jesuit priests.

2. Geographically, the place was not favorable to allow students to go to the college anymore.

3. Soibada is an historical place in relation to the history of Catholic churches in Timor, the history of Jesuit priests in the world, the culture and education in Timor and spiritual life for the reason that the Sanctuary of Aitara is considered as the national Sanctuary of Timor.

4. What is more, Soibada’s Sanctuary is the biggest Sanctuary in Asia, in comparison with Fatima or Lourdes in Europe. This Sanctuary resides in a country in Asia where the majority of the populations are Catholic. Therefore, when we think of Timor Leste has the potential for tourism; we may consider Soibada and Aitara as tourism destination for pilgrimage tourists.

5. Soibada would still be able to gain another important position for being the national identity with its new name of Aitara-Soibada, a National Asset of Timor Leste

In Timor Leste when we mention about Soibada,

subsequently will emerge an image of a place where

abundance of educated Timorese or those who are the

leaders of the country were once studied, or a place where

Saint Marry dwells in Aitara Tutun. These two names are

closely connected to each other as we refer to the same

place. So, when people forget one, it means they forget

both

2. SEJARAH SENDANGSONO

1. Sendangsono adalah tempat ziarah Goa Maria yang terletak di Desa Banjaroyo, Kecamatan Kalibawang, Kabupaten Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta.

2. Gua Maria Sendangsono dikelola oleh Paroki St. Maria Lourdes di Promasan, barat laut Yogyakarta.

Page 38: Design and Renovation of the Soibada Pilgrimage Timor Leste

2. SEJARAH SENDANGSONO

2. Pada 14 Desember 1904 silam Romo Van Lith membaptis 171 warga setempatdengan air dari kedua pohon sono, termasuk Bapak Barnabas sebagaikatekumen pertama. Dua puluh lima tahun kemudian tepatnya 8 Desember1929 Sendangsono dinyatakan resmi menjadi tempat penziarahan oleh RomoJ.B. Prennthaler SJ.

Ign. Surhayo Pr untuk memperingati 100 tahunSendangsono.
