Fedja Vukic - The Other Design History UPI-2M 2015 ISBN 9789537703288 Acqn 25926 Pb 13x20cm 100pp 25ills 15col £18 Professor at the Graduate School of Design, University of Zagreb, Fedja Vukić undertakes an investigative journey through the theory and criticism surrounding industrial production in the context of the mass market. Starting from the notions of design history in the United Kingdom and design studies in the United States since the mid-1980s onwards, he argues that these are an important component of a much broader history of industrialisation. In doing so, Vukić proposes that, in the Croatian context, this history could be differentiated by distinguishing the terms “form-giving” and “design” – in short, aestheticism in production versus the environment of production.

Aldo Bakker nai010 publishers 2016 ISBN 9789462082670 Acqn 26096 Pb 24x28cm 168pp 100col ills £32 Dutch designer Aldo Bakker (b. 1971) is famous for the creation of experimental shapes that blur the boundaries between art and design. Familiar objects obtain surprising new forms in the hands of this extraordinary designer. He established his international reputation in 2010 with the Copper Collection, a series of everyday products made from the unusual material copper. In this richly illustrated book, art critic Hans den Hartog Jager reflects on Bakker’s work, with great attention to form, material and (art historical) context. This new angle on Bakker’s design and the underlying ideas and inspirations will delight a wide audience.

Teppei Ono Seigensha Art Publishing 2015 ISBN 9784861525193 Acqn 25785 Pb 19x30cm 160pp 110ills 100col £37.95 In 1985, master potter Ono Teppei built a kiln on a small mountain in Tokoname. Later, in 2001, he built another which took three years to finish. He creates clay vessels in his personal quest to be free, writing that “the power of art is not only resistance, but also the release of emotions that brings freedom.” This monograph documents his remarkable artistic production from the early 1980s until the present day. Beautifully photographed, each glazed pot, bowl, dish, and vase embodies a singular, irreproducible moment of creation driven by Teppei’s dedication to his craft. Their earthy tones and imperfect shapes are an embodiment of finding peace and balance.

Michele De Lucchi - My Horrible Wonderful Clients Quodlibet 2015 ISBN 9788874627622 Acqn 25812 Pb 16x23cm 154pp 72ills 50col £21 Michele de Lucchi’s professional work has always existed in tandem with his personal exploration of architecture, design, technology, and crafts. He considers his true clients – themes like industry, nature, technology, and craftsmanship – to be more important than the tangible, paying ones. This book sheds light on these unseen protagonists as a sort of genuine biography that unfolds in a series of selected images, mainly in chronological order. From his early forays into radical architecture and experiences in 1980s Milan, to the achievements of his own professional studio, it reveals both familiar and more intimate aspects of his work, along with personal, humorous anecdotes.

Tejo Remy & Rene Veenhuizen - The World = Our Toolkit Lecturis 2016 ISBN 9789462261532 Acqn 26037 Pb 17x24cm 192pp 185ills 150col £29.25 Atelier Remy & Veenhuizen was formed in 2000, though the individual designers have been active since the 1990s, when “Dutch Design” exploded on the international scene. Although the two have different backgrounds, in their current practice neither is able or willing to distinguish who has contributed what to a specific design. This book explores their design process through well-known commissioned works and independent projects, framing their current practice in terms of compromise, freedom of materials, and the liberties they often take with assignments. An interview with the two designers forms a thread that weaves its way through the book’s many illustrated pages.

Writing & Illuminating & Lettering - Edward Johnston D & B Books 2016 ISBN 9781526201010 Acqn 26102 Pb 16x22cm 434pp ills col £25 Walk the streets of London, mention the name Edward Johnston and very few people will know who you mean. Yet these same Londoners not only see his work on a daily basis, but depend on it to navigate their way around the city. Surprisingly, the same is true in the design industry. When telling my peers I was working on this book, conversations went a little like this: ‘I’m working on a new edition of Edward Johnston’s book: Writing & Illuminating & Lettering.’ A blank face would stare back at me. ‘You know... the guy who designed the London Underground typeface,’ I would say. ‘Ah yes!’ But curiously enough, if you were to ask these same designers to produce a list of this country’s most iconic pieces of design, I guarantee Johnston’s work would grace the majority of them. – From the Introduction by Paul Felton
