If you ask your children, they can likely picture a future they would like to live in. Some dream to become doctors and help people, others want to be known for their talent. For children and teenagers, the future brings limitless possibilities. But no matter what their dream is, financial education can be instrumental in helping them achieve their goals. The theme for this year’s Youth Month is “The future is yours… Picture it! Save for it! Share it!”. Together, we’re encouraging youngsters to express themselves through photography, sharing their visions for their own financial futures so we can help them get there. Use of Polaroid images in juxtaposition to photos of accomplished adults in the theme is no coincidence – research shows that when you picture yourself in the future achieving a goal, like becoming a ballet dancer or going to college, saving for it becomes easier. Start small. Help your children save for a toy they want. Then sign them up for a youth savings account where they save for far-off goals. As your credit union, we want to help you teach your children to learn good financial habits. Together we can help them fulfill their dreams no matter big or small. Get involved by using the Twitter hashtag @CUYouthMonth to let everyone know how your credit union is making a difference in young members’ lives. The Future Is Yours: Picture it! Save for it! Share it! Dreaming of our ideal future delights and inspires us. Children, with their fertile imaginations, are particularly good at dreaming. But to make dreams come true, you need to have clear goals and, very likely, save some money to make them happen. Credit unions can help their members on both counts. Our theme for Youth Month this April, is “The Future is Yours: Picture it! Save for it! Share it!” We’re encouraging all members, particularly our youngest, to write down their dreams, create vision boards, and encourage each other. These activities will help lay the groundwork for their future success. Putting your dreams and goals down on paper where you can see them every day actually helps you achieve them! Studies were conducted at Dominican University on the science of goal setting. The results revealed that writing down your goals on a regular basis makes you 42% more likely to achieve them than if you don’t record them. They determined that using your imagination (right/creative brain) and writing those plans down (left/logical brain) engages your whole brain, including your subconscious. This makes it easier for you to find and seize opportunities that will help you achieve your goals, as well as keep you motivated. Young members who begin a habit of envisioning and recording their goals are more likely to achieve future goals as adults. This year’s Youth Month theme will give your members the encouragement they need to start this habit. To help your credit union celebrate Youth Month, here are a few ideas: 1. Encourage young members to write down their goals and create vision boards. Have them take a photo and share it on social media sites using the hashtag . Sharing their goal will help inspire others to set goals too. 2. Some goals, like graduating from college or starting a business, will require money. Encourage young members to set up a savings account tied to that goal.

To help your credit union celebrate Youth Month, here are a few ideas:

1. Encourage young members to write down their goals and create vision boards. Have them take a photo and share it on social media sites using the hashtag #CUYouthMonth. Sharing their goal will help inspire others to set goals too.

2. Some goals, like graduating from college or starting a business, will require money. Encourage young members to set up a savings account tied to that goal.
