ABOUT DAWNTOWN

DawnTown is a non-profit organiza on dedicated to promo ng architecture in Miami. The organiza on consists of a diverse group of individuals who care about the city’s architectural context. Through the development and management of interac ve programming, DawnTown func ons as ac vists on architec-ture. Our goal is to educate the people on exci ng new design possibili es for Miami, promote the talents of local and foreign designers, and showcase Miami’s architecture scene to the rest of the world.

ABOUT ALTERNATIVE MOBILITIES

Increasing fuel prices and ghtening infrastructure budgets are leading many commuters to seek alterna- ve modes of transporta on. ALTERNATIVE MOBILITIES explores a diff erent type of transporta on hub.

This center is oriented towards providing personal and pedestrian transport, without the large public budgets necessary to produce mass transit networks of the tradi onal bus and rail super projects. Provid-ing low-cost, low-fuel, high effi ciency private transit without interfering with exis ng transport modes, ALTERNATIVE MOBILITIES explores a new form of urban transporta on network: personal, inexpensive, fast, mobile, effi cient, and available on demand.

Within the last 5 years, many ci es have incorporated ways to promote cycling as an alterna ve mode of transporta on. Ci es like New York, Portland, Minneapolis and even Miami have established planning ef-forts and special events around cycling, but there has not been much progress to advance these strategies into the built environment. Chicago is one of those few ci es that have followed the European model by crea ng a bicycle center in their downtown that serves people commu ng to and from work.

Cycling may have helped the rejuvena on of urban centers and downtowns, but automobiles have had to adjust. As people return to these areas, the ability to own a car has become cumbersome and expensive. Car sharing mediates this dilemma by providing a middle ground between the pedestrian and the driver. The car share program allows for personal maneuverability over short term usage. These membership programs, like Car2Go or ZipCar, are tailored to suit the diff erent needs, from a leisurely drive through the city, a quick drop off at the airport, to running errands and grocery shopping. Recently, entrepreneurs have taken car sharing to the social networking level with applica ons such as Uber and Ly , providing an on demand and custom service to the individual. This compe on is not meant to replace current public means of transport, but rather fi nd a way to in-tersect them all at a central point. Having be er mobility op ons will create a genera on less dependent on personal automobile use, therefore allevia ng traffi c conges on and promo ng safer streets. These op ons will in turn make our ci es healthier, cleaner, sustainable, and more effi cient.

Le : Car share programs like Car2Go and Miami’s MetroMover are too great op ons to combat traffi c conges on.
