•Established in 1985
•The longest running student plastics design award in Europe
•Co-organised by The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining and the Worshipful Company of Horners. Bayer MaterialScience is the headline sponsor
•The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students registered in the UK for the academic year 2011-12
Background
Design Innovation in Plastics Competition
'Universal Design' : Designing for the Rest of Us
•Design a product to help those with physical or cognitive impairments that is also appealing to the mass market
•Create a design that is innovative, functional and universally appealing eg suitable at home, the workplace, entertainment, sports field
•Consider sustainability guidelines of reducing, reusing and recycling
•Entries will be judged on the effective use of plastics as well as showing a solid understanding of ergonomic considerations, manufacturing costs, sustainability principles, environmental impact and commercialisation

Brief
Design Innovation in Plastics Competition
First Prize, £1000 - Bayer MaterialScience, Leverkusen, Germany, one of the world’s largest producers of polymers and high-performance plastics.
Second Prize, £500 - DePuy International, Leeds, global leaders in providing healthcare solutions in orthopaedics, spinal care, sports medicine and neurosciences.
Third Prize, £250 - PDD, London, worldwide provider of integrated design and innovation skills.

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth - highly commended entrants each receive £100 and one of the following placements:
• Hi-Technology Group, a global leader in the design and production of products in engineering polymers.
• Brightworks, a leading product design and development consultancy.
• HellermannTyton, a leading supplier for fastening, fixing, identifying and protecting cables and their connecting components.
