PrototypingDesign Thinking - Fall 2021
Michelle Pannone
Using readily available, low-cost materials can quickly
create concept models for people to evaluate. The
sooner you create something tangible for people to
touch and manipulate, the earlier you’ll get
meaningful feedback about your ideas.
You can use rough models to help identify ideas that
are working, as well as pinpoint weaknesses early in
the process so they can be addressed before the
concept is finalized.
We build multiple alternatives to get honest feedback and
more information
Similar to interviewing - we want to know why
I drew a star for you, do you like it?

Tell me what you like and dislike about each star?
The Power of Imperfection - To succeed sooner
“... what people call genius consists mainly
of making all the possible mistakes
faster than anyone else…”
-paraphrase - anon. Nobel laureate (several)
Mock-Ups and PrototypingA rapidly built model of a new idea that approximates it appearance and behavior.
CHALLENGE: Every year, 15,000
children in the US are diagnosed
with diabetes. This not only means
a life-long disease, but children
must also quickly adapt to a new
lifestyle of restricted foods and daily
shots from their parents, which can
be confusing and upsetting.
SOLUTION: Jerry the Bear is an
interactive teaching toy that
prepares children for the changes
they will experience. Children learn
how to take care of themselves by
taking care of Jerry the Bear with
diabetes, giving insulin shots,
monitoring his diet and measuring
glucose levels.
Low Fidelity vs High Fidelity Prototypes
Benefits of Mock Up Prototypes
● Promotes a shared vision of the future
● Helps you test ideas quickly
● Lowers development costs through early discovery
● Helps you make iterative improvements
