Project Description Since Public Meetings were held in 2013, the N.C. Department of Transportation has continued work on I-85 Interstate Improvements Project ( I-3802B). The plan for the U.S. 29/601 direct connection to I-85 and the U.S. 29/N.C. 152 interchange has been updated and is presented at today’s meeting. The project is included in the 2016-2025 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and is scheduled to begin right of way acquisition in the fall of 2016. The initial stages of construction on I-85 will begin in late summer 2016. Design Updates The project team has been evaluating options to improve operations and safety while reducing the project’s effects on the community and the environment. The following revisions are proposed to the project in the vicinity of U.S. 29/601 and N.C. 152 (please refer to the public meeting map and proposed typical sections). Direct connection of U.S. 29/601 to I-85 is removed. Vehicles previously using this direct connection will utilize the improved interchange with N.C. 152 to access I-85. Redesigned U.S. 29/N.C. 152 interchange to improve capacity and operation to accommodate the removal of the U.S. 29/601 direct connection. Your Input Is Important! Public involvement is an important part of the planning process. NCDOT encourages citizen involvement on transportation projects, and will consider your suggestions and address your concerns. Today’s meeting is another important step in (NCDOT) efforts to keep you, the public, involved in the planning and development of the project. The meeting is being held to obtain your input on the design of the project. Comments will be accepted until Thursday, July 28, 2016.
