Notes:

The lace pattern begins and ends with a knit stitch,

and the lace pattern is worked on both the front

and on the back of the shell. This creates a 2 stitch

“side seam” on both the right and left sides of the

sweater. These “side seams” separate the front

and the back of the shell.

Decreases at the beginning of a right side row are

worked as an SSK, and at the end of a right side row

are worked as a K2tog. Decreases at the beginning

of a wrong side row are worked as a p2tog,

and at the end of a wrong side row are worked as

a p2tog-Tbl (through back loop.) Decreases can also

be worked by leaving out a YO while maintaining

the rest of the lace pattern.

The lace pattern is a 9 stitch repeat. I place a marker

every 9 stitches. This helps isolate mistakes, and will

also help keep track of decreases. The lace pattern

is balanced. There are 2 decreases, and 2 increases.

As you decrease, keep in mind that you need to keep

your lace decreases and increases balanced so that

you don’t double decrease (decrease on the edge,

and then decrease within the lace pattern without

a corresponding increase) or undo a decrease (decrease on the edge, then

increase within the lace pattern without a corresponding decrease.) At some

points you will have to work up to half of the lace pattern in Stockinette stitch to

maintain the correct number

of stitches.

Begin pattern:

CO 83 (92, 101, 119, 128) sts, pm, CO 84 (93, 102, 120, 129) using the long tail

method.

Garter Stitch Border

Reverse the needles so that the working yarn is attached

the left needle. To join in the round, slip the first stitch from

the right needle to the left needle, K2tog, PM for beginning

of round, do not turn. The purl ridge from the cast on is

the first garter stitch border ridge. Knit to end of round.

Continue in the round as follows:

Round 2: Purl

Round 3: Knit

Begin Lace

Work the lace pattern starting with Round 1 from the begin-

ning of the round to the first marker (this is the back of the

shell), then repeat the lace pattern from this marker to the

end of the round (front of shell.) Repeat the 4 rounds of the

lace pattern until the shell measures 17 (16.5, 16, 15,

14.25)”from the CO edge, ending with either round 2 or 4.

Shape Armholes, Back of Shell

BO 5(5, 6, 6, 7) sts, then work across the back in pattern to

the marker. Transfer the stitches for the front of the shell to

the 2nd- 24” circular needle to be worked after the back is

complete. The Back will now be worked flat. BO 5 (5, 6, 6, 7)

sts, then purl to end of row. Continue in the lace pattern, de-

creasing 1 st on each end every right side row 4 (4, 5, 6, 7)

times. 65 (74, 79, 95, 100) sts.

Work even in lace pattern until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9,

10, 10.75)” from initial armhole BO.

Shape Neck

Work 16 (17, 19, 23, 25) sts in pattern, BO 33 (40, 41, 49, 50)

sts, work 16 (17, 19, 23, 25) sts. Place remaining shoulder sts

on stitch holders.

Shape Armholes and V-Neck, Front of Shell

BO 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
