Majority of the citizens walk or cycle but poorquality of NMT infrastructure
Provide Infrastructure for thePeople as well..
Share the Road Programme
UNEP, Share the Road Programme“Investing in walking and cycling”
Share the Road Programme StR main goal:
To promote and supportsystematic investments inwalking and cycling roadinfrastructure
Working With: Government Donors Civil Society Implementing Partners
Basis for StR: Investing in NMT is a Triple WinOpportunity
Investments in Walking& Cycling RoadInfrastructure
• Accessibility Improves affordable access to vital
services Encourages a shift to NMT hence
reducing traffic congestion• Environment Reduces GHG & air pollutants Improves resource-efficiency in land
use and energy• Safety Protects vulnerable users through
proper facilities Improves safety for all users by
minimizing conflict

NMT Policies:Balanced Distribution of Investments
Nairobi NMT Policy Launch
NMT policy (either stand alone or as partof an integrated transport policy) is one ofthe enabling conditions necessary toredress the negative investment cycle intransportation infrastructure
Demonstration Projects:examples of shared sustainable roads

NMT Cost-benefit Analysis Tool
Non-motorisedtransport projectappraisal tool (NMT-PAT): A tool for theevaluation of costsand benefits related toNMT projects in datascarce environments
Aim: To get a deeperunderstanding of theinherent benefits inwalking and cyclinginfrastructure andprogrammes
NMT Design Guidelines
UNEP has developed NMTDesign Guidelines for Africa, asa menu of interventions to guidepolicy makers and localauthorities in planning, designingand realizing NMT facilities.
• The guidelines’recommendations supplement, rather than replace, any existingdetailed engineering guidanceand do not supersede anyexisting law, rule or regulation.
Courseware on NMT SituationalAnalysis
The courseware is based on thepremise that sustainabletransport is more than mobilityalone, it needs to address the 5A’s:
o Affordabilityo Availabilityo Accesso Accessibilityo Acceptability
Share the Road: Key LessonsLearnt…
Raising awareness and continuous sensitization on the importance of NMT isnecessary- policy makers, donors citizens e.t.c
A NMT Policy provides the basis for provision of the required infrastructure, information and conditions to make cycling and walking infrastructure a reality.
It is critical to include plans for how NMT will be funded as part of NMT policydevelopment
Political will and commitment is essential to achieve investments in NMT Pilot projects provide opportunity to demonstrate the multiple benefits of NMT.
Implementing pilots also provide an opportunity to test and learn. Choosing a pilot should be done with an understanding of the wider network and long
term objectives planned. Data-driven and evidence based decision making ensures decisions are grounded in
reality and take account of the needs of the citizens who will use the NMTinfrastructure.
NMT should be integrated with other transport systems e.g BRT for greater efficiency
