WHAT IS DESKTOP PUBLISHING

04/10/23Mr. Carroll - Instructor7

Publishing is the process of presenting material in printed form. Until recently, most publishing was done by large companies.

Desktop publishing is the use of a computer and special software to produce publishable documents.

Desktop publishing makes it possible to combine text and graphics (photographs and drawings) on the same page.

Using such software allows you to place text in columns and add headlines.

It can be used to produce advertising fliers, announcements, and newsletters that can reproduced on a copy machine.

Desktop publishing requires computer software and hardware.

SOFTWARE

04/10/23Mr. Carroll - Instructor8

Desktop publishing uses page layout programs. Page layout programs (software) combines text and graphics on a page.

Software Programs needed in desktop publishing include:Word processing Software – puts text into printed

form.Drawing Software – used to create illustrations. Image Editing Software – used to modify

drawings and photos.Clip-Art Software – contains photographs and

drawings that can be imported into a document.

HARDWARE

04/10/23Mr. Carroll - Instructor9

The hardware needed for desktop publishing depends on the types of documents to be produced and the software package being used:Large-screen monitors allow the user to view an entire

page.Color printers are useful for previewing color pages and

for printing small quantities of documents. The quality of printed documents prepared by desktop publishing depend on resolution. Resolution refers to the number of dots per inch of ink on a printed page. As the number of dots per inch increases, images become clearer.

Scanners are devices that change images such as photographs into an electronic form that computers can use.

A digital camera is a camera that can produce electronic images that can go directly into a computer.
