The Master’s Word
Fraternal Greeting from the East,
Congratulations to Brothers Alex Kurigia and Dores McDonnell for their recent successful Master Mason give back. I know how hard these Brothers have worked for this event and I commend them for a fantastic give
back, remember Brothers your give back is not the completion of your journey it is the beginning. This opens the door to all of our esoteric work. Every Brother should learn our degrees, charges and lectures. Our Lodge meets weekly Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm for our practices and District and Zone schools are available too, remember
an educated Mason is a dedicated Mason.
October 16th will be the Right Worshipful Tomas Izquierdo District Deputy Grand Master’s Official Visit to DeSoto Lodge come out and support your Lodge on this special night. This is a great way to hear Most Wor-shipful John E. Karroum’s message for the year and learn about the other Grand Lodge Programs that run year-
round and always need our support.
This year is quickly coming to an end but at DeSoto the projects are still ramping up. We will be replac-ing the ceiling tiles in the Lodge room soon and this will only be the start of the renovations. Our goal for the Lodge room will include new carpeting, wall treatments and upgrading our seating. If you think you can help in
these projects, please let us know! We are still in the planning phases and want your advice. Thank you, Broth-ers, for all the support this year. DeSoto Lodge is positioned to do great things within our Fraternity and commu-nities so keep up the great work and I’ll see you at Lodge!

October pancake breakfast.
With the upcoming officer elections in December reminder that all five of the elected position nominations
have to be in before the gavel drops at the Nov 6th business meeting. If you have someone you would like to nomi-
nate please see the secretary RW Wynn for the form.
I hope everyone had an opportunity to see the kitchen remodel if not stop by to see it as soon as you are able.
There were a lot of Brothers that contributed so much time and it looks really good.
The next big project I am in the planning stages of will be the ceiling tile replacements in the Lodge room on
a date TBD. There is a possibility that the Boy Scouts are going to do this as an Eagle Scout project. Even if this is
being coordinated by the young man we will still need a lot of Brothers to help as this will be a very, very, very, very
messy project and will require help to clean-up.
Fraternally,
Bro Dave St. John

From the South
J.W. Richard Vogt
Greetings from the South!
If you weren’t at Lodge for Family Night in September, you missed a great time. We had a presentation about Operation Patriot-serving veterans at the Veteran’s Home in Land-o-Lakes. We also heard about the Zendah Grotto and Ladies’ Auxiliary which meet in Plant City on the third Monday each month. Monarch Jeff Sklet called it the “playground” of the Blue Lodge. In addition to those excellent presentations, Brother Shae Pringle was presented his “Lambskin or White Leather Apron” by Right Worshipful Larry Lee. And then, to top it all off, Worshipful Steve Wilson and Worshipful Master Stephen Williams presented character/work specific cer-tificates to all the members that helped out with the remodel of our kitchen. They were spot on in their descrip-tions and it was hilarious. If you weren’t there, you truly missed a fun evening.
On August 28th, the Lodge handed out hot dogs to all the voters that came in that day to cast their vote in the primaries. I estimated that we gave out approximately 130 hot dogs that day. We will get another chance dur-ing the General Election on November 6th. I enlist everyone’s help to come out and show the Lodge colors to all the voters.
On that same night, we raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, Brother Dores McDonnell. After which, he got right to work and both he and Brother Alex Kuriga gave back their Master Mason Catechism on Family Night, Sept.18th. Yes, it only took Brother McDonnell three weeks to learn his catechism. That’s what you call a go-getter. He is anxious to earn his Silver Card and begin instructing new brothers on their catechisms. Well Done!-Brother McDonnell. And an equal Well Done! to Brother Kuriga. Congratulations also to our Senior Warden, Dave St John, who sat in the East for the first time for a Master Mason Degree for Brother McDonnell. You really don’t know how tough that is until you sit up there.
We have coming up several opportunities for the various degrees for new candidates, and brothers moving along their Masonic journey. I invite all Master Masons to come out and get involved in the rituals. To me, that is the MOST FUN you can have as a mason. We have ritual practice every Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. We would love to get as many brothers involved as possible. And even if you cannot commit to doing the rituals, please come out on degree night and support your brothers. To look out and see a number of brothers on the side-lines brings inestimable joy to our candidates and brothers.
The third Monday of each month is also our District School. It meets at Tampa #240 at 7:00 PM. This is where you find out about the smallest details of the rituals, including opening and closing the lodge, and the myri-ad other pieces that go into running a lodge meeting. We also usually have an MLT session after the District School. In September, we had Module 14, and the plan for October is to do Module 12. In addition, our next quarterly MLT training will be on Nov 3rd, starting at 9:00 AM at Turkey Creek Lodge. We will present Mod-ules 5, 8, and 9. If you attend the quarterly sessions and the District School session, you could complete MLT in less than a year. And the good news is—there are NO tests. You just have to listen to the presentations and if you want, get involved in the discussions. Easy-Peasey.
That’s all from the South for September. We have several things happening in October, but you’ll have to come to the Lodge to find out what we have going—SO COME ON OUT!
Fraternally,
Rick Vogt

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
By Bill Bartman
WHAT DOES KINDNESS AND GOODNESS MEAN TO MASONS?
Let’s look at these two virtues, and think of how we should practice each. I believe that kindness ought to be self-explanatory. It shows itself in how we treat those around us. It doesn’t take much for someone to witness un-kindness, rudeness, bad manners, and a nasty attitude, does it? You realize that living differently requires thinking differently, doesn’t it? We need to keep the GOLDEN RULE in mind, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” There is no excuse for a Mason to be rude and unkind to others! So, if you’re the sarcastic, rude type, STOP IT! Kindness includes respect, forbearance, courtesy, and patience. It is the presence of something good in us, not the mere absence of evil. Kindness is a LIFESTYLE, not an “off and on” virtue.
Goodness is a word in the Bible that may be better translated into English as GENEROSITY. Generosity is not about what is in your pocket; it’s about what’s in your heart. A generous man gives others the benefit of doubt and treats others with respect. He isn’t concerned about what the act of giving may cost in terms of time or effort. He doesn’t wait to be asked and doesn’t expect anything in return! We are so often weighed down with financial worry that we find it difficult to be open-handed with what we have. Do you realize that with tightly closed hands (selfishness), you not only don’t give, but it’s also impossible for anyone to give to you.
The Bible says that if we look after the needs of others, our Creator will meet all of our needs (Isaiah 58:10-12). A Mason sees the need of someone who he has the possibility of helping, and does so without hesitation. Did you know that our Creator “loves a cheerful giver?” Besides, where did all of our material possessions and money come from? Didn’t He provide it for us? The Bible says “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, ... (James 1:17) We need to remember that saying, “We brought nothing into the world, and we surely won’t take any-thing out of it.” Everything we have is on loan from our Creator.
Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” We learn the joy of giving and sharing as children, but sadly, we often stop as adults. I realize that we’re not wealthy like Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, but can’t we show goodness (generosity) to others? You know, as a nation, the United States gives away a lot of money. But an article in 2017 in Forbes magazine reported that 85% of Americans give less than 2% of their income to charitable organizations!! Isn’t it amazing how selfish Americans have become as individuals? I’m glad we ask, “Why did you become a Master Mason?” The second part of that answer addresses this issue, doesn’t it?
But remember, generosity is not from our pockets; it’s an attitude and life style. It’s giving of ourselves, very often more than money or goods. Do you “roll up your sleeves, and pitch in” when a need is there? Do you do it without being asked, and not expecting anything in return? Masons are good men, being made better by the fel-lowship and teaching within our fraternity. Let’s demonstrate that “Goodness” through our generosity. It’s the sign of a good man getting better and better.
Fraternally,
Bill
