DEAR WINE CLUB MEMBERS,People often ask us what food we recommend serving with our Nonvintage Zinfandel Port, and we’re happy to say that this luscious red wine offers many delectable possibilities. Dessert lovers will find the wine’s cherry liqueur richness and hints of mocha to be perfect foils for anything chocolate; truffles, mousse or a layer cake with chocolate ganache will fit the bill nicely. Nuts and cheeses are also a fine choice; serve this Zinfandel Port with toasted walnuts and a marbled English Stilton and you have a match made in heaven. For the dessert minimalist, of course, this wine is simply delicious all on its own.
With 2019 in full swing we’re excited about the events we have planned for wine club members. At the winery in St. Helena we look forward to hosting you at our annual Spring Release Party, The Joy of Wine Celebration and Harvest Party, where we’ll offer newly released wines paired with wine country fare, music and entertainment. If you’re in town, we also hope you’ll join us for our annual SF Giants Game outing featuring great seats and “upscale” ball park fare coupled with Rombauer wines. And for the second year in a row we’re offering club members the exclusive opportunity to share in a Mediterranean cruise hosted by Reagan Rombauer Blackwood. In fall 2019 our 8-day adventure will include visits to Portugal, Spain and France; as with our 2018 cruise, we’re pretty sure that the only thing that can top the wine, food and scenery is the opportunity to spend quality time with old and new friends. NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL PORTHighly viscous, this wine has a deep red to black core, and a brick red rim. It opens with aromas of cherry liqueur, raspberry jam, brown sugar, almond extract and dark chocolate powder. Flavors of black cherry, raspberry, rum-soaked raisins, dried florals and dark chocolate fill the palate, and flow to a smooth and round finish. Dense, luscious and rich, this wine is a pleasure to sip and enjoy on its own or with dessert.

Florentines CockaigneMake about 15 to 25 three-inch cookies
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners. Toss together until the fruit is separated:
1 ¼ cups packed chopped mixed candied fruit (such as candied citron, orange peel, and ginger)
½ cup all-purpose flour
Combine in a food processor with:
¼ cup packed light brown sugar ¼ cup honey ½ teaspoon vanilla ½ cup slivered almonds ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
Pulse until the fruit and nuts are about ¼ inch in size. Add:
¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted
Process briefly, until the fruit and nuts are about 1/8 inch in size. Remove to a bowl. Shape into 1-inch balls (I used a ½ tablespoon to measure out the dough) and place about 3 inches apart on the cookie sheets. Flatten the balls to 2 ½ inches. Bake, 1 sheet at a time, until golden brown, about 7 to 9 minutes. Let the cookies cool slightly, then turn onto a rack and coat the bottoms with:
4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, melted
