Detailed Digipak Analysis
Wasting Light – Foo Fighters
Black background: relating to the album title and contrasting
against the main image.
Main image:Series of close-ups graphically edited
through colour and layout – Bathe’s
Enigma Code; where is the light being
wasted? The band members
themselves?
Band name and Album title:The only text included on the front. Audience have limited information at a
first glance. Red font coincides with the colours present within the main image. Font is sans-serif and keeps the simplicity of the front. Central position
– one of the first things the audience will see.
Stereotypes/Codes and Conventions of Rock genre:The bold colours and capitalisation of the text connote volume and aggression that is commonly associated with this genre of music.
In-house style: consistency through colour scheme & presence of the band members within the artwork.
Band members confirmed to be most likely the ones who are ‘wasting light’ – the graphic effects upon the main image have diminished the image to an extent, making it unclear and ‘blinding’ with colour. They dominate both panels of the inside of the digipak, further supporting this idea.
Stereotypes of genre are present again through the connotations of rebellion and aggression through the band members ‘wasting light’ and occupying the majority of space.
Sleeve:Maintains the simplicity of the digipak’s design.
Black background, band’s logo in the center.
Yellow from the colour scheme has been incorporated to add variation to both the background and main image as well as to contrast against the darkness and produce further connotations of light.
Yellow flecks of colour:Connotes waste – adhering to the concept of the digipak. Almost makes the background appear eroded, again producing connotations and associations with genre.
Inside booklet:A series of performance shots graphically enhanced and
manipulated to achieve the same effect as seen in the main image of the front and inside of the digipak.
Final two pages of the sleeve:Promo shot of the band with the same graphic effect as previous shots of their practice/live shows.
Credits have been included again here.
Laid out in text boxes superimposed over another
image – creates an edgy appearance to the page.
Right hand page provides an aesthetic variation of information for the audience.
Disc:Mostly black, continuing on with the in-house style.
Yellow flecks of colour as previously seen on the sleeve.
The addition of white flecks suggests an increase in intensity – either in the light being wasted or the volume of the band’s music – also connoting further stereotypes of the rock genre.
Band’s name and album title is placed in the same capitalised, sans-serif font and placed
at the top-center again in continuity from the front of the digipak.
Image of a guitar is the basis for the disc’s artwork and has been graphically edited and
manipulated to be somewhat distorted – yet again perhaps for
the creation of connotations of
genre.
Credits to both the producing and mixing engineers has been included – superimposed over a black textbox for clarity.
Record label has also been credited through the inclusion of their logo.
Copyright information has
been included around a section
of the disc’s circumference in order to provide necessary credit
without significantly
impacting upon the aesthetics of
the digipak.
Consistent black background.
Main image is unidentifiable due to the graphic effects & blurring.
Text:Capitalised, sans-serif like the band name and album title seen elsewhere throughout the digipak, white with some yellow bleeding into it.
Left-justified and laid out in the conventional column structure of track listing.
Badges and logos of the companies involved in the production and distribution of the digipak/album.
Producing and mixing engineer have been credited in continuity with the disc itself. Smaller text displays links to social media, official websites for the band and record companies and further copyright information.
Conventional feature of a bar
code placed at the bottom-right
corner of the back.
