AMMONIA SOLUTION: Determination of Residue on Evaporation in Anhydrous Ammonia

WARNING AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

AMMONIS SOLUTION: SPLASHES INT0 EYES CAN CAUSE SEVERE BURNS. AVOID INGESTION. PRESSURE MAY BUILD UP IN CLOSED CONTAINERS.

1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This method is suitable for the determination of the residue left after evaporation i.e., the non-volatile material in ammonia solution.

2 PRINCIPLE

A known weight of sample is evaporated to dryness in a platinum dish on a steam bath. The increase in mass of the dish is measured.

3 APPARATUS

Normal laboratory apparatus and:

3.1 Platinum evaporation dish.

3.2 Muffle furnace capable of operating at 1000°C.

3.3 Steam bath.

4 PROCEDURE

Ignite a large platinum dish (3.1) in a Muffle furnace (3.2) at about 900°C for a few minutes, allow to cool thoroughly in a desiccator and weigh to the nearest 0.1 mg.

Weigh approximately 200 g sample into the platinum dish and evaporate on a steam bath (3.3).

Remove the dish from the steam bath and dry for 30 minutes in a suitable oven at 100 + 2°C. Cool thoroughly in a desiccator and reweigh to the nearest 0.1 mg; reserve for the Residue on Ignition test.

5.1 Expression of Results

Let w g - increase in mass of platinum dish.

5.2 Precision

Precision was not available at the time of issue.
