Detroit #1 Kiwanis
President’s Corner Spring is finally here (we hope!) and after this past winter, we are all ready for some sunshine and warm weather. The No. 1 club started off April with back to back Saturday service projects. On April 4th, we helped serve meals and clean up at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen for our Kiwanis One Day project. Then, on April 12th, our club partnered with the Salvation Army to make sandwiches and deliver food on the Bed and Bread trucks throughout the City of Detroit. These activities help energize the club and remind us of one of the big reasons we joined Kiwanis – to help those in need, especially children. Now is also a good time to join a committee for the Detroit 100th Anniversary event. You can be a host, help with the logistics of moving the attendees from one location to another or work on the Silent Auction. All ideas and hard work are welcomed. Other clubs are stepping up and offering to help with this historic event. Many members of Circle K have made a commitment to help at the event. Join in, work with your fellow Kiwanians and have some fun.
Eric, Your President
NEW MICHIGAN KIWANIS SECRETARY Michigan District has a new Executive Director. Greg Smith, a Michigan resident since 1973, is a member of the Utica/Shelby Township Club. Greg succeeds Al Dailey who recently retired. As quoted in the recent issue of the Michigan Builder, Greg says:
“What needs to happen to help your club and the District add new members, create a greater awareness of Kiwanis and become one of the top go-to service organizations in the state? That will be the focus of the District leadership team. We want you to join in, give us ideas, volunteer to help lead, get energized and spread the word about Kiwanis to all you know. I look forward to visiting your club, hearing your ideas and using the District team to help your club accomplish its goals. Contact me at 586-530-5174 or e-mail at [email protected]. Together we can help fulfill the Kiwanis mission of “helping improve the world one child and one community at a time” by starting in our own state.”
We look forward to the opportunity of meeting Greg, hopefully at one of our club meetings.

MEMBERSHIP We are having a MEMBERSHIP DRIVE....May 6th & May 20th! When you love your club, you’ll want to share that experience and invite others to be part of it. One organized way of sharing Kiwanis with others is to hold a membership drive. A membership drive focuses the club’s efforts on inviting potential members to an event planned just for them. Three simple steps will help your club achieve real growth this year to reach 100 new members. A Membership proposal was submitted to the Board - start the year off with a Membership Drive that involves all of us starting with the LEAD FORM and (5) referrals from each member given to the Membership Committee. PROJECTION: 50 members x 5 = 250. ATTRACTING YOUNGER & CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP: Your new people will be an asset to the club by being assigned a mentor. Mentor meaning a person that has been an officer of the club. The more effective message about Kiwanians begin with WHY you are a member, HOW Kiwanis gets things done, and WHAT the club does to create their service impact. Make your guests feel welcome and focus on sharing your club’s impact and the fun you have. Help new members feel special and involved. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Welcome our newest Corporate Member from Opening Gates in Southfield, Bryce Bernard, who will be installed in the club on May 6, 2014. He is being sponsored by President Colin of the Warren Club and co-sponsored by our own President Eric.

SUPPORTING CAMPERSHIP PROGRAMS Every summer, Kiwnanis No. 1 supports non-profit campership scholarship programs through our Kiwanis Foundation’s Drevant Fund. These funds help support camps who offer scholarships to kids and families who might not be able to participate without financial assistance. This year’s awardees include:
Camp Mak_A _Dream
Circle Y Ranch
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
The Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning
Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan
Kiwanis Key Leader Camp
The Salvation Army
Sandcastles
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Tamarack Camps
Urban Neighborhood Initiatives
Wildwood Ranch
YMCA, Camp Ohiyesa Please note, we do not fund individual campers, only programs. Every January we put out the call for proposals so as the summer progresses and you hear of camps you think could use our support, make a note and be prepared to let those programs know that we have scholarship monies available.
GIVING SERVICE Books for Kids
Our Books for Kids project continues to be one of our signature service efforts. We have been busy – so far in 2014 we have given away 17,846 books serving 19,058 children in the Detroit area!
The shelves are full so if you know of any schools or programs working with children, youth or families send them to our website for an application for books (www.kiwanis1.org). The next book stickering service day is Saturday, May 10th from 9 AM – noon. Hope to see you there!
As a reminder, we meet at the Dencap Warehouse at 45 E. Milwaukee, Detroit.
AKTION CLUB The Aktion Club is always showing how service matters through their many activities and their
dedication to the Kiwanis principles. Members have taken on the ELIMINATE project and have been collecting bottles to raise money. They also hosted an event: Bowling for Babies The April 17 “Eliminator” eliminated boredom and raised money for the Eliminate Project. The Detroit helping-Out Aktion Club organized their first bowling event which was held at mayflower Lanes in Redford, Michigan. Joined by the St. Johns, MI Aktion Club, the bowling alley came alive with the sound of laughter and falling pins. The event raised $560 for Eliminate. This means 311 moms and their unborn babies will be protected. The Detroit Helping-Out Aktion Club members were appreciative of the donations which helped offset their costs. As we left the bowling alley, one young woman from St. Johns, MI remarked, that she participated because “she was a member of the Kiwanis family and had to do something to help those poor mothers and their babies.” Just a couple of photos of everyone having a good time – bowling for ELIMINATE with fellow Kiwanians!
DID YOU KNOW? Aktion Club is the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 500 clubs and 11,000 members worldwide. Aktion Clubs draw members from various organizations that support individuals with disabilities, as well as other community programs. Aktion clubs can also be established at churches, libraries, YMCAs, lodges or similar facilities. A Kiwanis club, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor.
Motto: Where development has no disability. Vision: To develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.
Mission: To provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills and to serve their communities.
Core Values:
Character Building: The ability to the right thing, even when it might be the unpopular choice
Leadership: The ability to listen, communicate, serve and guide others
Inclusiveness: Accepting and welcoming differences in other people
Caring: The act of being concerned about or interested in other people or situations
SUPPORTING ELIMINATE
Did you? Have you? If not, why are you waiting? Babies are dying. Now is not the time to delay. 2014 is the year of Achievement. Fundraising is in full swing and clubs are actively working to save the lives of mothers and babies. As we march into 2015, have you done all that you can do to help raise $110 million U.S.? In the United States, we take safe childbirth and access to immunizations for granted. This is not the case in developing nations. In July 2015, when Sue Petresin steps on the stage as the first woman International President and a representative from the Michigan District, will she beam with pride to know that her district did all that it could do to save lives? Celebrating 100 years is a great achievement – but the crown jewel of the celebration is saving lives and eliminating a disease where the vaccine has been around for years. The 100 year celebration will be a hollow one if we do not meet The Eliminate goal. As of this writing, Detroit Number One has $16,443.25 in gifts and pledges towards our club goal of $42,750. There are 25 countries where babies are still dying because their mothers do not have $1.80 for tetanus vaccinations or access to
health clinics. $1.80!!! That is less that we pay for a cup of coffee. Can you not budget .41 a day over five years to save 416 lives? If .41 day is more than you can comfortably manage, why not pledge to save 100 babies – that’s a gift of $180 or a dime a day over a five year period. How many nickels and dimes do we lose in our sofas and cars each day? Enough to save a child’s life – if we choose to do so. Our partner in this effort, UNICEF, cannot go into a country to set up clinics and train health care workers until they have funds pledged – so if you are planning a gift for later, sign the pledge form now. Mother’s Day is approaching. Honor or remember a special woman in your life by giving the gift of life to others. A special Mother’s Day Zeller is available for $1,250. Smaller gifts are also recognized. Go to http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/Recognition/zellerMD.aspx.
