Welcome toDeutscher Tropentag 2002
at the University of Kassel-Witzenhausen
Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter PostlepPresident of the University of Kassel
Dear Guests,
I am very pleased to welcome you to the “Deutscher Tropentag 2002“ at the
University of Kassel, Witzenhausen. Moreover, I am particularly proud that the
“Deutscher Tropentag 2002“ will this year be held in Witzenhausen which has a
long tradition in tropical and subtropical agriculture.
Though the University of Kassel itself is still a young institution, founded 30
years ago, the subject of tropical and subtropical agriculture has already been
dealt with since 1898. Firstly the “Deutsche Kolonialschule für Landwirtschaft,
Handel und Gewerbe“ as the predecessor institution of the Faculty of Agriculture
provided the frame for training and other activities. Today, subject to many
changes during the last 100 years, training, research and scientific activities in
tropical and subtropical agriculture are carried out by the various departments
of the University of Kassel.
As president of a university which has, besides interdisciplinarity and practical
orientation, declared the international exchange in education, research and
development as leitmotif, I am particularly pleased that our university is able to
offer an adequate forum for the most recent topics in research and education in
tropical and subtropical agriculture for the numerous guests from all over the
world.
In addition, I wish all involved participants, organizations, institutions and
stakeholders to meet a productive environment at the University of Kassel,
Witzenhausen for fruitful discussions dealing with the manifold problems in
their international and interdisciplinary dimension as well as for the development
of solution alternatives. The new orientation of Witzenhausen on ecological
agriculture which is today also important in the field of tropical and subtropical
agriculture may perhaps lead to new priorities in the debate.
In this sense, I wish the “Deutscher Tropentag“ a lot of success and exciting
and fruitful discussions.

Welcome toDeutscher Tropentag 2002
in the Town of Witzenhausen
Dear Guests,
I wish to welcome you to Witzenhausen to the “Deutscher Tropentag 2002“.The Town of Witzenhausen is very proud that the conference is organized forthe first time by the University of Kassel at the Faculty of Agriculture,Witzenhausen. For a small town such as ours, the University is something special and aninternational conference an unique event. Being the host for both makes usdifferent from many other small towns in Germany, and the great interest theconference raises amongst scientists throughout the world shows that the topicsdealt with have been selected well. The centenary of the Tropical Greenhouse and the 5th day of the CultivatedPlant, celebrated with a comprehensive exhibition on pumpkins and a pumpkin, potato and elder fair, have not at least the aim to connect agricultural scientifictraditions with forward-looking innovations in and originating from Witzenhausen.I wish all the guests an interesting stay during the “Deutscher Tropentag 2002“in Witzenhausen. With kind regards
