Indie music bands and Los Banos-based artists performed at a concert titled #ELBINDIEFEST to help raise funds for the medical expenses of Devcom student Samantha Johanna “Sam” Timbreza. The show, organized by Gilid Productions, was held on August 25 at the Baker Hall. Bands and talents who played at the event included Tide/Edit, Autotelic, Miles Experience, Jensen and the Flips, Between Archery and Olympic, Arneil Sarzuelo, Tom’s Story, and SUD. Gilid Productions was established by Devcom alumni Heidi Mendoza, Jeyneth Mariano and Charlene Arkaina.

Timbreza was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease when she was in high school. The ailment took its toll on her kidneys, resulting in a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease in August 2015. While waiting for a kidney transplant, she undergoes twice-weekly dialysis, in addition to taking daily oral medications.

In a Facebook post, Timbreza thanked the bands, organizers, sponsors, and concert attendees. “Thank you, CDC faculty, staff, and students--your support means the world to me and my fam (thanks for the love, batch ‘13 AND ‘14, my new batchmates! Haha!). Ah, devcom--communication with a heart talaga. UPLB, walang papantay sa ‘yo,” she added.

The College of Development Communication served as one of the sponsors. Other organizations and businesses that supported the event included the UP ADS, Sigma Beta Sorority, UP Film Circle, UPLB Demolay Club, Jacques LB, and Heneral Ulam.

Cien Angela Baurile, Director of UP ADS, said that #ELBINDIEFEST is a way to promote and to show appreciation for local bands and OPM, while helping a fellow student. “Bilang DevCom student na batchmate si Sam Timbreza, naapreciate ko rin itong concert na ito dahil alam kong hindi lang ito ‘for fun’ kundi may matutulungan din tayo. Sam is a very talented and bright student. Sobrang nakakatuwa lang din na nakisama ang CDC at ibang students ng college para sa initiative na ito bilang parte naman ng family natin sa CDC si Sam,” Baurile said. (With report from JDMOrdoñez)

Parents and caregivers of infants learned about complementary feeding with indigenous ingredients at the Family Food Fun seminar on Mother, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) held at the UPLB Continuing Education Center (CEC) last August 5.

Nanay Ines Fernandez of Arugaan talked about how to prepare healthy, indigenous food to help babies transition to solids, and guidelines for complementary feeding. Participants were then invited to sample Arugaan recipes, such as santol juice, kamote-kalabasa bola bola, and vegetarian spaghetti. Fernandez is an MIYCN expert, a staunch breastfeeding advocate, and the founder of Arugaan, an NGO that provides breastfeeding counseling and nutrition education.

aProf. Lynette Carpio-Serrano, a peer counselor of Lactation Attachment Training Counselling Help (LATCH) Los Banos, notes that the introduction of healthy, indigenous solid foods is the logical step for babies and toddlers after six months of exclusive breastfeeding.

The conference theme, Development Communication in transitioning communities, is further translated into several sub-themes, which include community communication; intercultural communication; innovative teaching strategies for development communication; environmental communication; communication in ensuring food security; communication policies; peace communication; health communication; use of new media in development initiatives; and communication in humanitarian initiatives. The deadline for abstract submission is on September 30, 2016.

“It’s just continuing the good start that is exclusive breastfeeding. Kung tama ang start ng isang bata, you’re training a child to make a lifetime of food choices that are healthy for him. Good nutrition does not have to be expensive,” Serrano explained.

Family Food Fun was organized by LATCH Los Banos, the newest chapter of LATCH Philippines. The event was supported by the UPLB College of Human Ecology, Institute of Human Nutrition and Food. (LBCSerrano)

According to ADCEP, the conference is intended to serve as a platform of discourse on ideas, insights and experiences on development communication in communities at all levels; to serve as a forum for consultations regarding challenges and opportunities of development communication in these times of various transitions; and to provide opportunities for intercultural communication, linkages and fellowship.

Despite the light rain, the college proceeded with the drill, which started with the sounding of the alarm at 9:50 AM. An estimated 200 students, faculty members, staff, and construction workers performed the duck-cover-hold routine after the first alarm. They evacuated the building while using their hands or bags over their heads as cover after the second alarm. A rescue simulation was also done, with Devcom student Timothy Valenzuela acting as victim.

Everyone assembled at the UPLB Carabao Park quadrangle, where faculty members conducted a headcount of students to make sure that no one was left inside the building. It took approximately five to six minutes before the building was completely vacated, although most students and personnel were able to exit within two minutes.

Prior to the drill, classes were briefed about safety precautions through the showing of an audio-visual material.

The drill was deemed as a success by the organizers, who expressed hope that the participants will

two weeks. Activities include games, drawing, big-book reading, and small-group reading.

The iRead campaign was originally implemented among public schools in Los Baños. However, growing demand prompted the organization to go beyond the town and carry out the campaign in other municipalities of Laguna.

The organization also plans to donate storybooks and big books to the students of the Imok Elementary School. Book donors and volunteers who wish to participate in the campaign may go directly to the DevComSoc tambayan at the College of Development Communication, or contact them through their social media accounts: facebook.com/UPLBDevComSoc, twitter.com/uplbdevcomsoc, and instagram.com/uplbdevcomsoc/. remember what they have learned and experienced in case of an actual earthquake.

During the post-activity meeting, Fire Officer Eraño Bago of the Los Banos Bureau of Fire Protection gave the College an overall assessment of 8/10, citing the good attitude, behavior, and training of the participants. However, he noted the need for emergency lights to be installed along stairs and hallways to reduce the risk of panic and stampede in case of power failure. He also reiterated the need for regular checks on the structural soundness of the building.

According to aProf. Garry Jay Montemayor, chair of the CDC OHSC, the committee plans to conduct a safety audit within 2016 to justify the inclusion of safety equipment in the College’s 2017 annual procurement plan. Montemayor emphasized the importance of regular drills to ensure everyone’s safety during disasters. The committee plans to conduct a fire drill next year. (CYLArias and RBManguiat)
